I don't know how humble bundle works exactly, but it looks like I can just down the game directly? Downloading a 1.6GB zip file now in any case.

edit: Seems to start up just fine with no obvious DRM wall. Also seems buggy though.

edit2: Yeah, maybe wait for a patch or two if you can. Bugginess extends to steam version and lots of bugginess complaints on steam forums too.

The game is 22Euro on Steam but Gog key can be bought with 8.5Euro. Also the release is bugged.

I guess I will wait for 1 or 2 patches.

A little while thru the game and sound died completely. Other people had that problem as well.

Buggy as HELL. I don't even want to know how bad it was a month ago before their "round the clock fixing" sessions. Even the damn intro won't work in fullscreen mode.

Seriously, it's an adventure game. How do you fuck this up so badly?

Edit: Wow, it does work if you set all the options back to their default values. Why give us the option then?

I’m in the process of reviewing the long-awaited and repeatedly delayed spiritual successor to The Neverhood, Armikrog [official site]. And when I say “in the process of”, what I of course mean is, “starting the whole thing again because it’s so damned broken that it won’t trigger a vital cutscene meaning I can’t carry on.” And that’s just one of very many glitches and issues I’ve hit, and they’re just a small fraction of what’s being reported in angry Steam fora.

You might want to hold of buying this until some hefty patches have arrived.

And it’s a real shame, because the animation is just stunning. Some exquisite stop-motion work, in gorgeous sets, makes it a real visual treat. But right now, that’s where the fun ends. It really is a colossal mess, and that’s despite a release day-announced delay at the start of last month.

From the god-awful menus (broken in some languages, requiring you to change the language settings of Windows to fix!), and the optionless options which insanely contain Save/Load, to the default Windows cursor, it feels deeply unfinished. There’s no object highlighting to an extraordinary level, where objects that will soon be useful don’t react if clicked on before they’re ready. There’s certainly no “look at” option, but Armikrog goes even further with stripping down the adventure to almost nothing, by not even having an accessible inventory either. It’s done for you when you arbitrarily click. And arbitrary it really is, as the character magically produces objects before I’ve found them, opening the game up in all the wrong order.

Sound is a disaster, with voices often sounding like they’ve been gagged and sealed in a barrel, the music occasionally just vanishing. And for one character in one location, the voice has disappeared meaning they pantomime in silence. And now I’ve reached a point where, perhaps because I’ve inadvertently solved puzzles I shouldn’t have the parts for yet (although it’s anyone’s guess), it won’t trigger the introduction of one of the game’s key characters – the baby. The only reason I know this is because after clicking around randomly at every pixel on every screen, I gave up and wondered if anyone had made a YouTube walkthrough yet – thanks random Russian guy who has, because I got to see what should have happened when I went into the baby’s room, and now know I need to start the whole shitty thing over again.

So yes – don’t put yourself through this. Yet, at least. Although that doesn’t bode well, as one of the developers when asked about the barrage of bug reports rather extraordinarily replied on the Steam forums saying,

“There are a few minor issues, but the game is done and we’re quite happy and proud of it.”

I’m going to do my best to finish the game so I can enjoy the amazing animation, and will have a review if I’m able.

I fail to comprehend how can it be possible to release a broken adventure game. It's a mere work of scripting, for fuck's sake, I wonder if project-managing really is as difficult as every indie developer make it seem.

The lines between bugs and features are somewhat blurred.

Example: There is one point where I got stuck for 30 minutes. Basically you have to click on some area in order to trigger a cutscene and getting an item. However the game provides no clue that you have to click on that area and the area is somewhere in the air and not reachable at all.
This mechanic is like hitting the 4th wall in a game. To be honest I would understand if someone rage quits because of it. Awful moment.

The tentacle thing, that you use as an elevator, and then have to click on as Beak Beak?

That thing got me too.. :rage: shit sucks.

BUT: After the intro part, I have only found a single bug in my game so far. The sound disappears at that part I just talked about, if you click on it twice. Other than that, nothing.

Most of the complaints are "waaaaah, no feedback" or "mommy, give me clickable object highlights". Basically bitching about not having a quest compass. Personally I love it, it's EXACTLY like The Neverhood was in that regard, only the puzzles are much easier and more logical. In fact it already holds your hand a lot with Klay Jesus giving you hints if you click on him. Remember trying to solve that fucking mouse and cheese puzzle? I hated that shit. Remember walking through the Hall of Records for like 10 minutes straight?

One major disappointment for me is they pulled a Reverse Fallout 2, all whackyness and zanyness that made the Neverhood so fun is gone. This is a super cereal game. The closest thing is that beast right in the beginning that eats the little wheeled bird things.

Yeah that's the first review I read as well. Hugely butthurt about the game not holding his hand.

And the puzzles are a JOKE compared to The Neverhood. Or old-skool games where they make no sense such as Myst.

And voice acting sounds like it's in a barrel? IT SOUNDS LIKE A CLAY ROOM YOU DOLT. That's the idea.

Jesus you'd swear these people never played the Nev. They were expecting maybe Oblivion With Klay.

I agree about the mobile puzzle though, that thing is just painful since you have to listen to the whole damn song each time.

Some bits from the review.

Pros:
- "a completely wonderful stop-motion animated sequence"
- "the exquisite stop-motion animation loops for the characters are delightful"

Cons:
- "no mouse-over descriptions or highlighting for interactive objects"
- no "indication whether it’s going to be interactive or just background decoratio"
- "no explanation of what does what"
- "every room a void of interactivity, items that will be vital for progress ignored when clicked on too soon."
- puzzles are illogical/difficult/boring

Not clear if pro or con:
- "Wow - an adventure game where I don’t even get to select the inventory objects."

There aren't any spoilers in the review, and certainly he makes it sound pretty horrible, though I'll note that RPS and Doug Ten Napel have longstanding political grievances that have cropped up from time to time, so who knows whether and to what degree that's coloring the review.

There ARE some bullshit parts, tho- specifically the octopus-beakbeak one.

Not even a puzzle really, more like a completely nonsensical pixelhunt. Did it completely by accident.

Finished the game.

First thing first: Do not buy it at full price! Even 10Euro for this game feels like a ripoff and it takes approximately 3h to finish it without bullshit stuck moments.

Pros:
- clay animation and humor,
- original weird/bizarre world with good puzzles.

Cons:
- Beaky is underused. In fact, there are like 5 minutes of voice overs in the entire game.
- Non-sensical stuff like the octo-pussy mentioned above. Infinite wing-food for Beaky (!?) and so on.
- Alien language cutscenes. Ok. I understand why they exist but they are useless.

I have a feeling that the game is not finished. There are "things" which suggest that there were more paths in the game but they didn't make it in the end.
Also I'm not sure what was the focus of this game. It seems that they only cared about the clay animation and the puzzles while the story is ... not so much.

Bottom line is that the game is mediocre at best. The execution is original but the experience is not good. At least I did not feel like having "fun".
This feels like an old-style adventure game targeting a niche audience. Which is probably great for some people but it did not work for me.

I finished the game too. It's too short, but otherwise it would be very good. I got a very few bugs (2 to be precise, I was once stuck because I entered an area where I normally couldn't enter and there was a lag between image an audio at the end, nothing so awful then) .

Pros :
- The game is beautiful, I mean...it's very beautiful.
- The world and atmosphere are very good and the story is good.
- The puzzles and the overall progression are inventive, if not hard

Cons :
- The game is too short, and the world is too small.
- It's probably too easy, but still enjoyable as it is.

- Alien language cutscenes. Ok. I understand why they exist but they are useless.
At the end (when the octopusses shine) they are finally translated and they are even used for the last puzzle, you take one word from each octopus based on what the guys from the third area said. I think it's one of the really inventinve puzzles of the game. I wonder how you managed to solve it.
And even for the story it's funny to discover what you understood perfectly and what you didn't understood perfectly when it was in alien language.

I briefly read the RPS review and I don't agree with him. If I answer MRY's summary :
Cons:
- "no mouse-over descriptions or highlighting for interactive objects"
- no "indication whether it’s going to be interactive or just background decoratio"
- "no explanation of what does what"
True, but not Cons at all, the game wants to be immersive by not throwing any text at your face, that's all.

- "every room a void of interactivity, items that will be vital for progress ignored when clicked on too soon."
I never met that bug.

- puzzles are illogical/difficult/boring
I don't agree. I would say that they are easy and inventive.
