Anyone else replaying Wasteland because of the Wasteland 2 hype?

I didnt realize the old 80's game had much of a modding community anyway.

They recently released a tool that allows unpacking map data into .xmls.

Just wanted to post this for posterity:

If you are playing Wasteland in DOSBox and it is randomly locking up, change the DOS version (which is easy to do using D-Fend Reloaded) to version 6.22.

Version of Wasteland: The one from the Ultimate RPG Archives.

I never made a proper party in Wasteland, and always used the default one, because I am never sure whether the party I'll create is of any use. I made some attempts with parties of my own, but something always goes wrong, some skill I should have which I don't.

It's strange, because I normally spend a lot of time on character creation or restarting the game until I get the characters I like. In Wasteland (which I never even came close to finishing), I always used Razor & Co.

I've never completed Wasteland although I have an ongoing game, and it seems to be a game that you need some skill spoilers or luck in order to finish on the first try. I guess that's not much different than a few other games at the time.

I'd assume that the default party is skilled to complete the game, but creating your own is harder because I believe some of the skills are vital and some of them don't have any use at all.

I got D-fend Reloaded, but can you help me set it up? Like you know, quick tutorial. And link for download for that version of Wasteland you are talking about would be nice.

I, too, would like a tutorial on D-Fend and a link to Wasteland since I never played the original myself

A proper reading of the manual and some intelligence is all that is required to finish Wasteland. For example, the manual states that IQ is the same as how many points you have to spend on initial skills, so a nice stat to boost up.

Another fact is that 1 point in a skill doesn't usually cost a fortune, and these skills go up with usage after that...so only a complete moron could stuff themselves up with the skill system. A simple 1 point outlay in most skills is perfect. Usage will do the rest in most cases. And you can always save points...spend them at a library, etc, later on.

I didn't even have the above when first setting off into the Wasteland...the kids today...

    possible skill spoilers:

That's one strategy I used, but I'm sure there are better ones out there.

There is always Per's excellent Wasteland Guide: http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/wasteland.html

Read his summary of the skills. I am using his recommended skills and am doing quite well so far. About to assault the Courthouse. Kind of feel bad killing those Housemaids though. D:

Since the developers tried to balance skills over the entire starting party, it makes sense to just keep the default group. However, the game is easier with a group you create yourself, but it requires a little time and planning. The default group helps you avoid having multiple players with duplicate skills but it sucks not having everyone with climb, swimming, or brawling: skills that prove to be useful very quickly. However, not having the right skill can be just as fun.

Seems that if you created a party with the skills you wanted for each player, you'd have more of an attachment to the outcome and would be more likely to finish this awesome game. Also, play the C64 version, which is the best of all.

Also, I'd like to just have the paragraphs on one sheet with just the relevant paragraphs, not that Scorpoid war shit. Those paragraphs always drag me out of the game when my eyes stop on them.

That guide is great. One thing I'd really recommend even to veteran players (especially if they didn't play the PC version back then) is the combat macro setup. For me, the game is every bit as fun as it was on the C64, except for the sheer number of random encounters. The combat macro helps a lot.

I just had TPK in the Temple of Blood. Before that I lost Angela Deth, Mayor and Jackie from radiation.

I just started playing Wasteland today to get ready for W2. Once I got over the kinda crappy UI I've found this game incredibly addictive. Combat is surprisingly not too hard either, I haven't really been messing with builds much, just scrapped together some skills I thought would be important and so far I haven't really had any issues- though I did lose one party member in the mineshaft. So far I've messed around in Highpool and Ag centre and I've moved on to the Nomads now. For anyone who's played this before, is there an actual endgame to this or is it basically a collection of random quests scattered around a map?

For anyone who's interested I also came across this It's basically the paragraph book in cmd prompt form. Enter the paragraph number and you get it instantly, beats having to read through a manual or sift through a text file since you can keep right next to the window for your game.

On a side note, the ending didn't trigger when I first left for some reason. I had to walk around, go back in, and then exit again for it to trigger. Of course, this made all my rangers dies. :(

Blackadder I finally have the time to sit down for a proper complete playthrough for the 2nd time. I'm thinking of trying with an all-melee party, but given that you only find
in the game, how feasible is it? The best build I can figure for this is to put more points into Sneaking and Brawling in the beginning.

    Btw out of curiosity,

has there ever been any reported cases of this before?

Thanks Jaesun. I glossed through Per's guide before, but I'll read it thoroughly tonight. His guide was indispensable in helping me through the last bit of the game. I know. I'm guilty of reading a walkthrough to complete a game :(

There's another guide that I found some time ago too, but this is less comprehensive than Per's guide. The author - Ben Morgan - posts on the WL2 forums, and he also submitted it to GameFAQs, but the most updated version is found on his website:
