Mass Effect developers BioWare to reveal new IP in the "not too distant future"

BioWare aren't just working on Mass Effect Andromeda. There's another game in a completely new series in the pipeline, and it's due to be revealed in the "not too distant future".

EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund spoke about the BioWare announcement in a chat with GIBiz.

"We've been very open about the fact that BioWare is working on a new IP," says Soderlund, "and we'll get to talk about that in the not too distant future.

"We have other teams working on new IP as well. I think it's about a balance, right? Making sure that we continue to push what great looks like for Battlefield or FIFA or Madden - or Star Wars, for that matter - while continuing to invest in something new."

BioWare's new IP is being made by BioWare Edmonton, the same studio that's behind Mass Effect Andromeda. Before this year's E3, EA teased that we'd be getting a new BioWare IP next year, so that's potentially two big RPGs from the studio in 2017.

If it's still on track for 2017, surely we can expect a reveal before the next E3. Perhaps we'll see something at the September 7 Sony press event. Hopefully it's multiplatform.

That's some gawddamned quality Tier 1 professional journalism right there. As if EA makes anything else, what a dumbfuck.

So we have talked obviously about the next Battlefront coming a year from now, and we're working very hard on making sure that is an extremely deep and engaging offering. We've talked about an action title that's not yet announced, but we're very excited and that's a good chance that that will fall into fiscal 2018.

Looks like the new unannounced Bioware IP will be out by March 2018. It ain't Motive Studios new game (still 3-4 years out) or the Amy Hennig Star Wars title (already announced).

There's still respawn entertainment's new title. Which is also a star wars game.

They just wrapped up Titanfall 2. It would take them a bit longer for their new Star Wars game to come out.

BioWare's New IP Is Story-Based, Not Being Announced Anytime Soon
"It's a privilege to get to work on new IP."

BioWare manager Aaryn Flynn has shared some new insight into the Mass Effectdeveloper's mysterious new IP. Speaking to Game Informer, Flynn said the unannounced game is coming along well. He also stressed that you shouldn't expect the game to be announced soon.

"We're not going to talk about it until we're confident about what it's going to be and everything," he said. "We've been doing reviews with [EA CEO Andrew Wilson], and I think he likes it. So, knock on wood, we'll keep working on it and we'll keep doing it. Hopefully you'll hear more about that once Andromeda's done and we've satisfied fans with that game."

Asked what piece of feedback Wilson gave BioWare in his review session, Flynn said the CEO might have said the game is "more done" than what he would have expected. The game, which is being made by members of the Knights of the Old Republic team, was playable all the way back in 2013.

Speaking generally about working on a new IP, Flynn said BioWare feels lucky to be able to do so.

"It's a privilege to get to work on new IP. It's one of those once every ten years kind of a thing that you get to do," he said.

BioWare did a lot of "soul-searching" to determine what it wanted to make for a new IP, Flynn said.

"You have to ask yourself, 'Do you want to do something that fiercly different or do you want to do something that's very recognizable?' 'Do you want to take something that you've done and put a spin on it, or do you want to wipe the slate clean and say what would we do in this.' And for us, what we said was we're BioWare, so we have a certain kind of game that we love making and we know our fans would love, so we started with that and that's a game that has as its heart stories and storytelling. So we decided we're going to stick with that. We're not just going to walk away from that."

"Once we agreed on that, everything started to fall into place."

Flynn added that BioWare's ambition with the new IP is to "push technology." He went on to say that the game aims to have believable, relatable characters; those that you would want to know in real life.

Also in the interview, Flynn said the canceled BioWare game Shadow Realmsmight have been announced too early. He added that the developer is hoping not to repeat that mistake with the new IP. Flynn also added that BioWare is interested in finding out a way to make a co-op campaign work in a future game.

BioWare announced its new IP in September 2012, saying the game is being built from the ground up running on "new gaming technology." This could have been a reference to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which hadn't been released yet. In March 2013, former BioWare designer Casey Hudson said the game will deliver "something new, the way we did at the very beginning of Mass Effect."

Flynn's full interview with Game Informer is incredibly fascinating and well worth your time if you're interested in Mass Effect and BioWare in general. Watch the video interview here.

Bioware games are lucky to have just one character who isn't insufferable these days. Having relatable characters I'd want to know in real life is totally beyond them

Getting told by EA's market research people what to do is now soul-searching?

Looks like they're going to reveal the new thing this year: http://blog.bioware.com/2017/01/31/a-note-about-our-new-ip/

A Note About Our New IP

Hi everyone,

As we’re working hard to finish Mass Effect: Andromeda, I wanted to take a minute to talk about our new IP. As our CEO Andrew Wilson mentioned, we’re creating a unique IP that will bring players together in exciting new ways.

There’s much more to say in the coming months, but for now, I wanted to offer this additional background.

In 2012, we began crafting a new universe full of new characters, stories, and gameplay. Our ambition is simple: Draw upon 20+ years of development knowledge and lessons to create something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends.

There’s nothing quite as exciting as building a new IP from scratch, and it will be even more thrilling for us to share more with you in the future.

Thanks,

Aaryn

Ah, so it was mentioned during EA's post-earnings call:

BioWare’s new IP sure sounds like a Destiny competitor, based on EA’s financial call this afternoon. The game, which EA says will be out in FY18 (aka: by March 2018), is set in a brand new world but will fuse “the great RPG character development and story progression that BioWare is known for” with a new action-adventure world, EA says.

the company is working on a new BioWare IP with "potential to fundamentally disrupt the way people think about an action title."

edit: http://www.polygon.com/2017/1/31/14461222/new-bioware-game-release-date

A new, original intellectual property from BioWare will launch by the end of this fiscal year, Electronic Arts announced on a conference call for investors. The action title is expected by March 31, 2018, when the company’s 2017 fiscal year ends.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson teased details about the game, which is being worked on by members of the Mass Effect franchise. The game will have an online component of some kind, encouraging players to interact in a completely new setting.

“It’s an action-adventure, not RPG,” Wilson added during the Q&A portion of the call. That’s a change of pace for BioWare, which is best known for its role-playing game franchises.

Studio fans can still expect to see “the great RPG character development and story progression that BioWare is known for,” Wilson continued.

Bioware's games have role playing. This will not.

I can see why Gaider jumped ship. Why would he want to work on this?

Ha, for once a Bioware thread getting moved to General Gaming is actually appropriate. :P
