I've been playing this game for the past few days with the Compiled Mod, which apparently iron's out most, if not all, of the game breaking bugs.
Anyway, so far it's pretty neat. It's kinda like M&B, only less boring and with Pirates. It just feels like there's more meaningful content to it. My only problem is that the naval warfare is more trouble than it's worth when you have a shitty skill in it. I could circle the enemy for 30 minutes while missing cannon fire at point blank range, or I can just board the enemy ship and swashbuckle my way through their troops and get all manner of loot.
So who else has played this game? It's pretty fucking neato so far.

I abandoned ship after 10 mins because I hated the combat. But if you so recommended, I might be tempted to try it out.

It's one of the best games ever released. When the modding starts to kick in that is. There are some serious flaws like changing from worldmap to sailing mode and back lets all ships disappearing (ship/encounter positions aren't stored / are randomly), rats eat everything of your cargo and such things. Combined Mod has ironed out a good amount of it but brought his own bugs / unnecesarry changes with it (and the worldmap problem isn't fixed). Still a very good game that I enjoy.

But I can recommend the PotC game with Build Mod a bit more. Mainly because you can change/tweak gamesetting and mechanics from the optionsmenu completely to your liking. It still has some balancing issues though. When Coas gets the same treatment it will be AWESOME!

That's a bit odd because I think seacombat is easy and in melee the crew and I get quickly slaughtered when outnumbered. What difficulty do you play at the moment?

    Ew, what the fuck no.
    These are terrible.

Play Sea Dogs instead, it's pretty much the only decent game that Akella has ever put out.

COAS is just to long and land fighting is whackamole which is shame; I think captains were prohibited from it for good reasons in Sea Dogs which has better focused story line with heavy accent on sea battles. (four storylines to be precise). PotC game with Build Mod was good too.
And OP shud put the link to the mod, if they improved the game by ridding off the rats fe, it coud be worth checking out. Some quests were intresting and some ships beautifal.

Playing on the easiest at the moment, and the game is still a fair bit challenging. But that isn't really the issue. The problem is how shitty the accuracy is at first. It is abyssmal. I can understand you sucking as a beginner, sure, but this much? I also have a pretty decent gunner, and while it is a bit better with him, it's just easier and more fun to start off with melee combat.
I think the biggest issue here is that you have to get really close to the enemy to hit them with crappy cannons and aim skill, but you also have to be careful that you don't get too close or you might board the enemy on accident.
And for those who don't know how the skill system works in this game, the more you do something the better you get at it. So it's kind of difficult to get good at shooting with ship cannons at the beginning of the game.

As for the mod, here it is: http://www.moddb.com/games/age-of-pirat ... oned-ships

I'm not entirely sure what it adds. I just downloaded it since I was told that you need it to get rid of the bugs. Don't know what other improvements they have added.
