I'll send you the pay stub from my latest consultant job, I think the amount will not be what you expect. I'm feeling generous, so imagine I clicked on every ad instead, and the money you would have gotten from that as my rebated fee.
You go ahead and do that. I just loved this "my time is worth more than yours"... while posting on an internet forum... In a thread about ads... Which you don't even load.

Such precious, precious time.
Excellent point, and considering today is Sunday, the underLORD's day, I'll disable AdBlock while browsing this site on those occasions.

Since time is so unimportant I'm sure you won't mind taking an extra job just to pay for the servers right? Ultimately that's what this boils down to. Either a few people can invest a small amount of time working to keep the site running with money, or everyone can (collectively) spend an immense amount of time to keep it running with ads. I don't know how much you get per view, but obviously if just looking at ads paid as well as a job it'd be the job we all do. It's the guys paying you to put up ads that are making the real profit from this shit after all. And the time it takes to close ads, report problem ads, load ads, scroll past ads, and clean out the occasional malware attack from ads is certainly not insignificant. If it was nobody would be using adblock in the first place.

But for anyone who absolutely hates all of them for one reason or another we do offer a legitimate way of never having to see them.
Are you implying that using AdBlock or NoScript is illegal? Or is there a rule about using those in the ToS of this site. Maybe you should look into that instead of this passive aggressive shit.

I use adblock because my time is worth more than yours, or so I like to think, and I only use it because of the popup ads. Forcing me to spend time closing those annoying popup windows adds up, you know. I'll make you a deal, I'll disable adblock if you pay me for my wasted time. Or you could do the work pre-screening them and disable the obviously offending ads instead of making users waste time reporting them. Then, and only then, will I browse this forum with adblock disabled.

No, I'm not implying that it's illegal, only that it should be. Making rules about it here would certainly not have any effect unless such legislature was passed so I'd rather not waste time on that.

You don't need AdBlock to block popups, every browser does that by default for the last 5+ years, so that's one of the lamer never-ending "I need AdBlock because X, Y, Z, W..." excuses I've heard so far. I like your aggressive, extortionist attitude though - I'm sure that's very helpful in your job.

That's not true, I still get popups on the codex using firefox without adblock. Admittedly they are rare, I think it only happens when you login or on the main page.

Also ads on embedded videos, though I haven't bothered to check if it's just the banner ads or the awful lol-watch-this-shit-before-video type too.

Are you sure you didn't allow pops for the Codex in your browser? Embedded videos don't have anything to do with the Codex, those ads come from the video providers, not us.

Yeah I'm sure, one gets through sometimes. It doesn't happen everytime though and only on main page/login so to me it's not a big deal. Not like this horrible square thing anyway.

Ads can use JavaScript to bypass any normal popup blocker. Best bet is to use an extension that lets you disable JS on the Codex.

I can confirm that with adblock turned on on youtube, and turned off on the codex, that embedded youtube videos on the codex have ads that play.

I used to disable JS all over the place, but half the fucking internet stops working without it these days, so I gave up on that.

I can see myself considering some payment when the staff drops that "all for teh lulz" attitude. You want to be treated like serious business that deserves money? Then act like one. As long as I see the admin getting paid in lulz and butthurt, I don't get the outrage about blocking ads.

Not to mention half the forum's content is moving into useless chat-like megathreads and any answer from staff is along the lines "lol fix it yourself, too much work".

No, I'm not implying that Adblock is illegal, only that it should be.
Why?

Taluntain What about those scripts that put ads up as forum posts and clearly state ADVERTISEMENT? Lots of motorsport site forums use those and you can just scroll past them like any other bullshit post by a moron.

Adblock should be illegal because otherwise ads won't be profitable? That's a laugh. I hope advertising dies a horrible death and brings down many people with it. It's easily the worst concept to have ever taken hold in human civilization, the legitimization of lying for profit. Propaganda, corrupt politics, celebrities getting away with murder- it all stems from this absurd notion of forcing information down people's throats being ok, that appearance is as valid as reality.

Yea, I've seen those, but we've already got one ad inside threads themselves, I'm not planning on adding more. I only added the one on the thread lists now because when I set the ads up originally, XenForo didn't have an ad template in that spot so those pages only had 1 ad instead of 2 like all the others.

After using adblock for a while I don't think I can ever go back to not doing so. They really ruin websites tremendously. It was okay when it was text-only.

Just tried it: animated flash graphics promising slimmer bellies, right in the middle of the thread overview, animated banners in colors that absolutely clash with the Codex style at the top-- remember when it was text-only Google ads? That was okay. But this isn't.

If you wanna have ads you gotta make sure they aren't obnoxious and can easily be ignored. Nobody clicks that shit anyway.

Yea, I have been getting almost the same ads for a couple of weeks now I think.

The wide ads are game related but all square shaped ads are of Tiny billy and Flat stomach and they are in every page. Tried deleting cache and cookies, used CCleaner too and still same ads every time.

You mean it was okay for you when they were text-only, because nobody clicked on them so they didn't pay anything either (newsflash - the Codex generates bills every month that have to be paid), but yea, ad blockers gonna adblock, no point in wasting time repeating the same things that I've listed in the first post of this thread ad nauseam. Whoever's looking for an excuse or a justification to block ads has always managed to find one, that's never going to change.

Different ads show to people in different geographic locations, the ones you mention are usually fillers that are shown when there's nothing else or when you live in a country that our advertising providers have no better ads for. Eventually they always change, though.

Seriously. What the fuck. It's literally disgusting to look at and it's the only type of ads I can see here while unblocking. They also are the type of ads that are trying to insult your audience intelligence in a very, very bad way. It's aimed at complete retards and no one here would ever click that stuff. "I quickly lowered my blood pressure with this 1 weird ingredient" NO YOU DIDN'T. They are the kind of ads I ONLY expect from very shady websites filled with malware and/or porn. Not ads from a respectable venue.

This happens and is reproducible if you either don't have flash installed, or have flash activated as a "click to play" only plugin in your browser. The ad provider goes full retard because they don't seem to have any decent fallback and no, having flash, a non standard, very exploitable/buggy plugin activated should not be mandatory for a pleasant browsing experience that doesn't involve pics that make me throw up a little in my mouth.

Disgusting to look at? I'd say boring.
Add some tranny porn advertisements to make me click on them.
Please.

I feel your pain, but Flash has been the de-facto standard for advertising creatives for years. No amount of lamenting that fact is going to make the majority of the ads go back to jpgs or gifs. That's why we offer the option to get rid of all the ads site-wise with a small donation, we can never please everyone.
