Oh my God, that's so not traditional Chris Metzen art. Me not like that at all. I sure hope SC2 won't be following in WC3's art design-y footsteps. (But it will.)

Signature is "Sieg" and a small word under it? "Heil"? Signature is "Sieg Heil"? What? Holy shit, Blizzie!

Jesus fucking hell, it looks awful. Only a nazi could draw something so horrible.

Edit: Did the Protoss always have those freaky looking legs?

Those legs are fucking sexy.
That's the only sexy thing about the art, though.

Yeah, Protoss were always digitigrade.

The draenei in WoW were <s>copied</s> based off of the Protoss.

Oh god don't remind me. I remember the reading the 12 year olds writing rumors of how WoW ties in to the Starcraft universe because the Protoss are evolved Draenei.

OP: That picture isn't even official Blizzard art to begin with.

Now this looks typical samwise/blizzard.

What is this Warcraft art in my Starcraft thread?
Starcraft: Broodwar concept art had the same style, really. Samwise loves the exaggerated art style, and even in-game it looked that way -- units were forced to be very different from each other. Even Terran infantry looked very distinct, as opposed to games like CnC where you are sometimes hardpressed to tell the difference between certain types of infantry. Or Supreme Commander, where it takes a lot of time to tell between all those vehicles.
Starcraft always had this "unit personality' thing to it, and that's one of the things I loved the franchise for (though Warcraft had a similar approach, of course). And this approach is applied to Starcraft 2 as well, in same measure.

Conerning the Protoss unit design, well... don't forget it's a concept art. It gives the feel, not the "realistic" or finished picture. Again, refer to old Starcraft:Broodwar concept arts and you'll see that it had pretty much the same "anime-ish" style. Well at least those drawn by Samwise Didier (Metzen gave a more comicbook-like vibe to it). Just compare Samwise's concepts and, say, the in-game campaign selection menu (with hydralisk, zealot and marine) -- the former is anime-ish, the latter is just slightly exaggerated realism.

Notice that despite the in-game "anime-ishness", the Starcraft2 movies look sharply realistic (well the exaggerated vibe is also there -- the huge marine armor, almost inhumanly steroid-pumped muscles etc).

However I still don't like the in-game model of Zealots and Dark templars (not because of the weapons even). I mean they have enough polygons to make them detailed (just look at Thor it's very high-poly for an RTS model).

Anyways, starcraft art style has always been multivarious and inconsistent, even (but always a bit exaggerated) -- it's like 3 in 1 type of thing. NOt the overly coherent style as in other games (like, cnC series always strived to be realistic looking, both in movies (which were live action) and in-game ).

It's "Sieg" and the other word is the year, 2007. Might as well be an abbreviation of "Siegfried" (actually a co-member of another forum truncated his name this way). OMFG RACIST PARANOID KEN-LOOKING DAVID HASSELHOFF.

Is it just me or does that gunship look like it is heading in one direction while its bomb pods on its side look like they are pointing in a slightly different direction?

Actually, that unit is one of the ones thats supposedly designed for planetary use only. (TYhough I doubt anyone will tell that to the guys deciding what units are available on the space battles.)

More to the point, helicopters in general suck balls when everything has super accurate deathray lasers to maim the rotors with. And they made it an anti ground splash unit and gave it cloaking. Between that and the units with blinking skills I suspect starcraft 2 is going to be filled with REALLY annoying units to fight against.

"Oh look; he researched one of the 30 units that can only be countered by another very specific unit. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee."

The new DT has to be the ugliest thing though. Bright green double energy scythe on a STEALTH unit? Oh yeah. Great plan there. I like how it's designed to maim you if you wield it at anything further than 1 foot from your face too. The look of the armor and shit doesn't matter much to me; they'll just change that ugly crap in game. But that thing better not have a fucking energy scythe when it hits the shelves.

If you look at his face you can see he's trying to work out how the fuck he's meant to use that thing without killing himself.

He can't swing it, as the back blade is going to cut him in fucking half, he can't jab at people with it unless he holds it horizontally. In fact that seems the only possible way to use it without killing yourself, hold the stick horizontally and just keep flipping it over and over in your hands.

Dark templars will charge sideways at enemies and spin their dual-scythes at amazing speeds.
As for the helicopter - it's kinda cool, except a stealth helicopter doesn't really make much sense. Unless they have a sound negator or something like that.
It's not going to be used in space battles because you can't drop bombs in space.
By the way, does anyone know how the fuck ships fly around in outer space? How can they change their direction? Void aerodynamics lulz?

There is a space tileset in SC2. They aren't going to disallow a unit based on tileset. It's just Blizzard going "omg helicoptars look cool."

Space Platforms have an atmosphere. And natural resources for that matter.
How do you think the zerg survive?

Why bending over backwards to defend it? It's a space helicopter.
Of course they have an atmosphere. All that fossil gas that emanates from the crust of the space station collects over the years and forms a Vespene atmosphere.
The fossil gas comes from the zerg who were killed while burrowed under the metal surface of the station.
