In my couple of decades of DM'ing and quite a few different player groups. I saw around 30% of straight male players playing at one point or another a female character.
I never met a single one who did it (willingly). However I know a DM who when running Pendragon main campaign if a male player's character dies without leaving a male heir but had a daughter - he is supposed to play as the daughter. And vice versa for women playing that campaign (there is one).

How many of you have played as a female character? Lots of men do that, and vice versa. Hence the demand for in game same-sex romances. It’s not that complicated. This idea that people only play RPGs as themselves is willfully obtuse.

If you make a female Shepard, say, because you’d prefer to stare at a woman’s ass for the whole game, you’ll probably also prefer lesbian romances. Just like lesbian pornography is very popular with straight men.

If developers really cared about catering to niche audiences, this place wouldn’t be so full of butthurt all the time.

I don't think that many men play as a woman in rpgs, hell even in Mass Effect barely 18% of the players played as FemShep, that's pathetic numbers especially for a company as Soyware, which we all know is filled with degenerates that want all straight men to be eradicated.

They aren't playing straight men tho. ;)

I did play as a homosexual man in PnP (Shadowrun) and a bisexual one (in DSA). Obviously wasn't much of a difference since I didn't make that the center of either character.
But a girl? I honestly think it just feels too off if you hear a manly voice and it is supposed to be a girl. Of course, if you were a dwarven woman, nobody would notice anyway.

In computer RPGs, I think I've played a woman a few times, but not usually.

What's a role-playing game without options? I alternate depending on my mood and the persona I'm aiming for. To quote T.S. Eliot, 'only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things'.

The "I don't want to look at a mans butt, waaaah!" is probably the most retarded argument ever. People have butts, so what. It is not like you're forced to stare at it and it takes up like 2% of the screen. I just watch the environment, NPCs, enemies or whatever is around, probably forgetting my character is even there. If the mere presence of a male ass is so disturbing for someone, he probably is a repressed homo. I wonder how those people go outside, because there are men on the streets and they do have butts.
They don't really mean it. They are just saying it to not appear gay.

Sometimes (maybe 1 in 10 at best) I'll make a female character if it suits the class better (spellcasters usually), but only if the armour doesn't look like a modified "sexy [class]" halloween costume nonsense, and I don't have to listen to any annoying voice acting. I made an exception in Saints Row 3 and my second character (for a co-op playthrough) was a woman because one of the female voice options was some crazy Russian with amusing dialogue about fighting bears and whatnot. The male voice sets were all pretty boring.

It depends about the game.

-Some games different sex means different skills, like Diablo.
-In Fallout you have the luck skill so you could be a female but you want to be a male. Too bad you are forced to be human else you would play as a lucky male duck: Gladstone!
-In DAO your noble character has a dog. I had no relatives with dogs. So I roleplayed my grandmother.
-If you play a necromancer in italian the word is NEGROmante (that is funny because is quite similar to negro amante that means negro lover) and since negro is male (for black female you use the word negra) italian culture favor black male characters for necromancy.
-Castle of the Winds you get the tombstone with written the cause of your death. Indiana Jones killed by a snake. George Washington killed by low constitution (just cast spells until you die to obtain it).
-VTMB you are a vampire noob, usually in old classics vampire noobs are female while the vampire boss is a male.
-Tyranny the boss Kyros is jealous so your pc is female.
-Morrowind Nerevar was a male, so you are supposed to be male

Didn't MCA say he wanted PST to be written as a female character?. I pretty much self ejected from that thread at that point, and I'm gonna do the same thing here now...
..Bet it would have sold even more though...

Isn't TNO disfigured or something, doubt people would have cared if a chick replaced him and she was disfigured as well.

It's an interesting theory, not saying I disagree. But companies would never, ever phrase it that way.

"We put lesbos in Mass Effect so you don't have to feel weird and gay by getting your jungle fever on with Jacob."

I think fallout 1 and 2 has alot of small differences too in this case, so are all troika games.
I don't think Arcanum does this.
Arcanum does do this. Not only does it affect some quests and how some character address the PC, but females also receive a +1CON and a -1 STR stats, can choose female specific Character Backgrounds (there are male specific ones too) and there is no female Dwarf or Ogre option (explained in-game lore IIRC) or female Halfling and Gnome (they wanted them, but didn't have time to make the models and animations).

Any time you can make your own face I cannot resist the temptation of making a freak. It's why I'd rate Oblivion higher than Skyrim due to the fact that Bethesda really tried to prevent players from making monsters in character generation. Same applies to female characters, and on top of that, I don't think I'd have the patience to make anyone pretty - all that time fine tuning features I'd just be thinking the whole time about how pathetic it is that I'm spending so much effort on a beautiful face and not just playing the bloody game.

Wish I'd kept a screenshot of the chick I first played FONV as. Went for a inbred redneck background with ghostly pale skin, tiny, beady eyes and a fucked up mouth with a giant, jutting underbite.

Made it hilarious every time someone tried to hit on her, or she seduced someone, like Benny when you can choke him to death. Also made VATS tolerable in that I'd get a good laugh seeing her face, which with a hat and sunglasses on, always reminded me of Johnny Depp from the poster of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas:

All assholes who demand women be given frontline roles where they risk capture are either closet rapists who love to see women tortured and raped but are too cowardly to do that themselves or traitors to western civilisation. I can think of no other reason for them to demand that women be put in such a position.
In an all-or-nothing-us-vs-them surely the women should fight.

Which is the rational behind Thailand's long history of female soldiery. They figured it would be better to fight and possibly die than sit back and risk being enslaved later.

Because the traditional 90s-00s thought on gender is that female is the superior, more advantageous gender to live as, and males are dumb muscles, until alt-right club took over and say outrageous stuff about female when it is simply them coping for being born as the inferior males. Of all people here, only JarlFrank stays honest, everyone else are coping losers.

Also if I remember correctly being a girl makes it more difficult to get into the Gentlemen's Club in Tarant.

That explains how x wings one-shot thai fighters. And why they're so goddam loud.

As a small note:

In DnD/Faerun/Forgotten Realms, it's actually possible that women are at least as strong as men:
- The number of female goddess is about the same as male gods.
- Some of them are particularly strong and favour the women: Lolth and her matriarchical Dark Elf is one particular example. Shar is another.

The difference in strength, dexterity, endurance can be erased with a 3rd tier divine spell Draw Upon Holy Might

I know about the female-specific backgrounds (most of which are closely mirrored to male counterparts) and starting stats (btw female characters kinda suck in arcanum thanks to that -1 str, since it can lower your str cap to 19 or below, while it takes 20 str to get the double damage perk), but I'm not really aware of any female-specific in-game content. I don't think anyone really gives a damn whether the Living One is male or female.
