With a difficulty mod and no Vita chambers. Yeah yeah it ain't no SS2. But if you're fine with the likes of Dishonored or Prey then it will be right up your ass alley. Too bad they milked the setting with the latter two games. Wonder if it can be salvaged...

After FEAR and Crysis 1, are there any non-mp exclusive shooters that aren't fucking garbage? Compared to nuDoom/Wolf, Bioshock doesn't look as bad. Still pretty "meh", but not "escort lampshade girl while she whines nonstop" tiers of bad.

Any hint of a "fps Renaissance" any time soon?

Necrovision. It's p. much the last genuinely good shooter, imo. After that there were only "it's cool, but..." kind of games, like Wolfenstein '09, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, EYE: Divine Cybermancy, Serious Sam 3... and that's about it, unless I'm forgetting something. Everything else is just varying shades of trash.

Did you play that NEW build engine game I remember a thread on GG? Ion Maiden? Is it looking good?

Well, along those titles release timeframe there was Timeshift, the only shooter I know that utilizes time manipulation gimmick the most thoroughly. There also was Xenus series but they are more leaning to proto-Far Cry 3.

I think it's the opposite, Bioshock is a fucking travesty to FPS as a genre and NuDoom and Wolf '14 perfectly fine. At least gunplay in latter two is not fucked up.

Necrovision was the last great, i agree. But after a decade of literally nothing, can you blame a man for wanting some action? "Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his bro?"

And some say video gaymes are more popular than ever. Modern fps goes like "watch 2 minute cutscene", walk corridor, get told what to do by a bot, press button, watch another cutscene, perform "cinematic takedown", walk corridor, find more friendly bots, fight big battle where bots do all the work, watch cutscene...

Damn kids nowadays fucking hate PLAYING their games cuz actually shooting shit is like...10 percent of the experience or so.

I couldn't get into Necrovision back then, felt like clunky garbage to me. Should I retry?

Necrovision is pretty much what NuWolf should have been. It's a surprisingly well-designed shooter that crumbles in the very last levels. Variety, well-designed enemies, good athmosphere, great weapons, tons of powers.... also INCREDIBLY retarded plot, but we aren't playing it for plot, nah?

OK I guess I will retry it one of these days. Not like there's that much to choose from anyway.

However, this thread didn't start with a post about pure shooters. Bioshock has some light RPG elements, so I might as well throw in STALKER CoP as last of my favorites.

It had none... But with the mod it has. Rudimentary, but they are there. For example you can't get all the plasmids, even with harvesting the girls, you have to pick a few and make do with them.

Ah fuck, honestly I don't even remember that much from it. Except that I found the game boring as shit even before I came to codex and found out everything is shit. Then later I played SS2, fell in love with it from first minutes, and started hating Bioshit even more.

Ok I got some enjoyment out of Bioshock, the setting was cool, had some atmosphere. But I never bothered finishing it in 3 attempts. I was playing SS2 for the first time at the same time I was playing Bioshock (at launch). The latter was like a pauper in comparison to the princeliness of the former.

Make the Codex Great Again!
Bioshock is a shining example of a game with stellar design, right down to the UI, where you couldn't even choose what the fuck you wanted to grab from containers (and you had to scarf everything down like a starving African child), not to mention no inventory so you couldn't see what crafting materials you were carrying, no mantling, and awful, linear level + encounter design. If we're putting this next to Prey, then we might as well compare Cowadoody to STALKER.

VA was good tho.

Dexter's assesment is pretty spot on in that topic... Its a b game by a b team.

Out of your points I'll grant that hacking was better, but how are the rest improvements?

-Wielding plasmids and guns at the same time:
In BS1 having to switch between them gave a *hint* of deliberation and planning to otherwise shitty encounters. Of course, the dudebros recognized this flaw and demanded that simply holding one button and firing is enough for achiving the awesome feeling. 2K Marine complied.

-Recorder instead of camera:
In BS1 you were vulnerable during taking these shots.
In BS2 you can finally fire away at all times during the game, without a brake. The dudebros rejoiced and could now show off all their creativity.

-No tonic restrictions:
No restrictions, need i say more? The Dude Bro nods his head in silent approval.

-You didnt mention it but the worst thing is, there is no more backtracking to previous areas, and the maps are built with that in mind. Like in a typical corridor shooter you are now supposed to see all the glorious content in one go and not miss anything.
...

I will type some more later.
