oh

nepotism strikes again!
Oh come on, I'm sure he had some past experience working on RPGs that explains why Obsidian hired him. Let's see...

Just for clarification, I was implying Starks was hired because of him, not the other way around.
Or maybe he was hired because of her? She seems like she could be one of Tim's hags.

https://old.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/8rb4bs/jez_says_microsoft_isnt_done_making_acquisitions/

Jez says Microsoft isn't done making acquisitions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEm9VlWF9G4&app=desktop

1:55:00 in Jez claims to have received a DM from an Xbox exec that "this is just the beginning"

Jeff Gertsmann and Waypoint.com have also heard rumors of more acquisitions but that Phil isn't talking about them yet.

One of the names that have been thrown around is Obsidian. They're apparently open to being bought and have been for a while

I wonder where this "rumor" of Obsidian coming from? Not in the video I think.

Playground is bigger than Obsidian, so size wouldn't rule it out, but unlike Obsidian, they make games which sell on console.

Also I think the fact that MS has founded a new AAA studio in Santa Monica makes it less likely.

You are kind to say, but I only did lore/pre-production work on Tyranny, no writing, unfortunately (most of time was shanghaied for Pillars). 2 of the Tyranny writers, including the Writing Lead, left in the past year, but some of the writers are still there. :)

So long MacLean and Tim's husband.

Excluding a few level designers who do a bit of writing on the side, MacLean was the last pre-Pillars writer still working there.

I'm sad.

Incline of Obsidian?

Nevermind, they kept the likes of Megan Starks, so I take that back.

"We need you on Pillars, Chris. It's the first IP we get to own and we need your talents for it to be succesful."

"I see you wrote two intriguing companions whose stories explore all sorts of interesting aspects of the Pillars universe and really sell the player on the setting. However, we have decided to cut almost all your work and implement those companions with only a fraction of the content you wrote for them."

"Oh, and whatever you do, don't tell anyone we took you off Tyranny and had the game be developed by a skeleton crew made up mostly of inexperienced new hires. It would constitute contract breach and we'd be in real trouble if Paradox found out. Besides the possibility of a lawsuit, it would obviously mean Paradox would never want to work with us again and would instead partner up with another RPG developer like Harebrained Schemes."

From the sound of how he's talked about the cuts before, Avellone wasn't mad at the cutting so much as that Sawyer or Fenstermaker (maybe both?) was a dick about it

He didn't do much writing before Tyranny though. Wasn't he more of a systems designer?

He was a companion writer on MotB (Safiya and Okku).
