Google (Chrome) demands it. That's the main reason.
It can be safer in specific cases. Like, when you log in on a website. It is supposed to prevent people listening in to what goes over the line (ie. your ISP / system admin). It doesn't protect against bad coding, locally stored passwords and keys, phishing or people opening some random mail attachement. Very few web developers have any idea about how encryption and RSA actually work, they just assume that using SSL fixes everything. It doesn't.
