Ok so I just wanted to report that modding FNV is significantly easier than I thought and spam you with a couple of thoughts on some mods and the game itself. It's a shame there's like 3 FNV-mod threads but this was the one I read so I'll contribute here.
I mostly followed the Steam guide some guy posted a few pages back. ModOrganizer and FNEdit did 95% of the heavy-lifting.
It took me ~6 hours rather than the 6 days that modding Fallout 3 took a couple of years back (fuck people who link to Gopher's videos).
I wanted a mostly vanilla experience as I had played the game up to the Strip back in 2010/11 but it got too buggy and with a myriad quests half completed that play-through got abandoned.
For the record, I typed out the mods I used by hand (no worthwhile export option in ModOrganizer):
In a broadly thematic order

GOG Version so no 4GB Patcher
YUP
Unofficial Patch plus
StutterRemoval
CleanQuicksave

New Vegas Character Expansions Ultimate

NVStripOpen
FreesideOpen

JSawyer Ultimate
Project Nevada -there's a JSawyer Preset so I hope it didn't mess up balance too much. Mainly wanted it for the Quality of Life improvements (+reduced Gore and ragdolls) rather than the candy or the gameplay additions (I had already played F3 with FWE so I knew what it was like)

LootMenu
Enhanced Camera

BetterPickupPrompt

SimpleDLCDelay
RagdolTTW
Rewarding Exploring
Simple Reputation and Disguises
OutsideBets

UserInterfaceOrganizer
VanillaUI Plus
Vanilla HUD
ModConfigMenu
MusicRecovery

Enhanced Shaders

The result was a surprisingly crash-free and bug-free experience. I had played the somewhat patched Vanilla FNV back in the day and it was hell, my modded F3 playthrough in 2015 was 3 times as crash-prone as these were.

The StripOpen and FreeSideOpen were the mods that most surprised me as I did not notice a single bug or flaw in their implementation. I had to do a bit more walking due to the reduced map-waypoints but I remember being annoyed by the layout of the Strip back in the day, and these were basically a perfect fix. On a similar note, I put in some slight content restoration mods which (don't remember which ones) and aside from non-voiced dialog I couldn't tell which ones those were.

LootMenu is hands-down the biggest QualityofLife improvement I've experienced in a Gamebryo game. As my playthrough was somewhat hardcore-ish I still got extremely tired of the loot system (and might be modding carry-weight limits out of any other Beth games) but I just can't overstate how well it worked and how much it improved the process of playing.

Enhanced Shader (ENB) - Now I was as skeptical of ENBs as the next person (shitty bloom and instagram-esque depth of field bullshit) but New Vegas looked too ugly to my eyes (last game I played was Gothic 2 so..). I looked quickly through my options (which usually involved stuff building on the weather mods, which feature impractically dark nights) and stumbled upon this. My machine is actually from 2010 so some of the other famous ENBs weren't an option due to performance reasons. This one had a few performance levels so I went with like 2/4 and found it perfect. Among other improvements I could notice a more natural-looking lighting (no pissfilter which initially I wasn't bothered by), good Ambient Occlusion, a touch of camera-like focus and slightly more bloom. Thoroughly recomended and I would say it only created problems in 2-3 areas which were a simple Shift-F12 away from a sidestep. Throw the enhanced character models and quick texture pack and my 5850 could render the game as something much prettier than it did in 2010.

As to the actual game (can't see the actual thread for this so apologies if this a derail). I gotta say I was somewhat underwhelmed.
In short: There was much to appreciate as an RPG-fan but little to love.

My playthrough took ~130hrs (dunno if I missed any content but I doubt it) but I had ran out of steam by the 40hr mark. It was sparked by the MCA-thread, (and was the biggest item on my to-play list) as I felt I was missing out by not having played the DLCs. Ulysses was too ambiguous and cryptic for me to appreciate and very much the sole ambitiously written character out of the dozens I encountered. OldWorldBlues was Bethesda-esque lolzy, DeadMoney was Bioshock-esque in the wrong sort of game while Honest Hearts I'll entirely forget about in 6 months.
I tried to delay the choice between the factions as much as possible but in the end, I had to pick between a bunch of bad options. Not in the good Witcher-y way either. House gave me strong Musk vibes, NCR were boring while Caesar's Legion was too thin on substance (and Caesar himself was plainly fascistic rather than the HegelianDialectics-informed mastermind I had hoped he'd be). Maybe the other, more content-heavy endings would have worked better for me than Yes Man did but my sense of payoff was lacking.

I sank 200hrs into F3 so maybe it's the gameplay that tired me. The initial 15-7 levels were pretty good RPG-fun but I feel I couldn't keep up with that level of thoroughness in a game of such a scale. I played with JSawyer and obviously the Hardcore mode features turned on and went with a rather conventional highINT, Speech, Science + Gun character. The bits of Project Nevada that I had installed might have somewhat messed up the balance but most importantly I doubt it would have mattered much.*
Maybe my playthrough was spoiled by knowing too much about the factions and the choice between then and less meta-knowledge would have allowed me to be enamored with it. *As it stands I feel it could have been more focused. (less content, more fleshed out)
Maybe the hardcore mods weren't worth the hassle and I should have story-modded it. I mainly agree with a review I read that says that Fallout isn't really about wasteland survival and tight resources. I think the Metro series are better if someone is looking for the post-apoc atmosphere, STALKER if someone is looking for the open-world freedom and the tight resources, the Bioshocks for the world, Age of Decadence for the quest design and probably the 3rd Witcher for the all-around RPGness (shit dialog system but FNV's wasn't THAAT much more fleshed out).

It's still top10 material but I reckon I had more minute-to-minute fun playing the other 9 entries (maybe I'm too tired for RPGs?).

So basically for me MOTB>>>>KOTOR2TSL>>FNV>>NWN2

Me too. I just got through the DLCs today.

Ulysses was too ambiguous and cryptic for me to appreciate and very much the sole ambitiously written character out of the dozens I encountered.

This. The combat was tough enough that I actually had to put some thought into how I fought, but after 5 hours of killing zombies I expected a better payoff in the end.

OldWorldBlues was Bethesda-esque lolzy

This. I didn't bother finishing it.

Honest Hearts I'll entirely forget about in 6 months.

This.

I did like Dead Money though. I thought it did a pretty good of squeezing as much gameplay as you can out of Bethesda's engine. I felt like I was actually making some interesting decisions about how to use my resources, not just going around and clicking on all the bad guys until they die. It worked well as a short vacation from the Mojave where I could still play as the same character but without all the junk I'd been hoarding.

Are there any up-to-date guides out there or http://wiki.step-project.com/User:EssArrBee/FalloutNewVegas is still the best available?

Is this a known problem that NV would crash at startup if Courier's stash is not installed and activated? I already played the game for couple of days now, using some mods with Mod Organizer and it was all well, but now of a sudden it notifies me that:
The masters for some plugins (esp/esl/esm) are not enabled.
The game will crash unless you install and enable the following plugins:
  • CaravanPack.esm
  • ClassicPack.esm
  • MercenaryPack.esm
  • TribalPack.esm
And yeah, it does crash right at the start.
The problem is i don't want the stupid stash and even if i uncheck the boxes it still places the items in the inventory even mid game. What the hell. Guess i can live with that to be able to play, but it annoys me to no end. Why would this stupid dlc be critical to run game.

"NVCE - New Vegas Character Expansions" is absolutely brilliant, characters no longer look like potatoes:

Strap Yourselves In Serpent in the Staglands Shadorwun: Hong Kong Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
Is there just a basic mod list that doesn't change game play, story, etc. just fixes bugs, improves the graphics, etc.?
You'll want the YUP for patches, and there's a mood for less potato faces, New Vegas redesigned or summat.

Bare Necessities:

New Vegas Script Extender - http://nvse.silverlock.org/
JIP LN NVSE Plugin - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/58277
4GB Patcher (Ignore if you installed NV from GOG) - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62552/?
New Vegas Anti Crash - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/53635
New Vegas Stutter Remover - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/34832
YUP Bugfixes - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/51664/
Unofficial Patch Plus - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62953
HeroinZero's Weapon Fixes - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/65041

Graphics mods is a slippery slope, let's not go there. There are however some worthwile and faithful UI improvements:

User Interface Organizer - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/57174
Improved Recipe Menu - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/59638
Vanilla HUD Remastered - https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/64102
Vanilla UI Plus - https://www.moddb.com/mods/vanilla-ui-plus/downloads/vanilla-ui-plus-nv

Are these already in the order I should install them in? Also, I have the GOG version so will the NV Script Extender work with that one? It says on their download page only use the Steam version.

Thanks for the simple list!

The project will die. These big mods are never finished. The only exception I can think of is the SureAI team and Fallout New California.

The project will die when the team determines they are putting insane amounts of work into a game for free, while their lives are crumbling around them. All so some 12 year old faggot can jump in the thread and tell them it doesn't work with A World of Pain.

Nothing works with AWOP, they know that, everyone starts making mods trying to make something work with AWOP.

Yes, everyone knows except for the dummies which are most of the world's population. Granted I am talking about Nexus three or four years ago. I stopped going.

What's the point of AWOP? Why not just go play something like borderlands if you want to kill stuff for random loot?

I do, they obviously don't have the production values of content made by proper dev teams but some of them are ok. There are a couple of modders like someguy2000 and Mike hancho (or something like that) that consistenly put out decent content.
A decent amount of good ones have released, they just don't get the amount of attention that they deserve. Most are either 70-80% voice acted to 100% voice acted. And often with mildly interesting plots. It's a shame that most people stop at Someguy and look no further.
a list please.
