Is there anything redeeming about Ultima 9? Being less than one USD makes it tempting, but I'd hate to waste my time if it is awful even when looking at it as a stand alone game and not part of the Ultima series.

I'll be controversial here and say that if you don't really care about Ultima lore in general, or continuity, then Ultima IX is a decent-ish game with the unofficial patches installed. It's like a strange and more linear Gothic lite romp (sort of), with some nice music, pretty surroundings and a storyline that plays upon the theme of vices, if I recall correctly. It's not exactly subtle or as refined as many would've hoped but there it is. The combat is lacklustre but that's nothing new for the series and the controls can be a bit awkward. For that price you get a decent open world fantasy ARPG, in my opinion, if you're willing to forget what it represents as far as the Ultima series is concerned. I mean, Pagan had inflicted considerable damage already.

You can make a stairway to heaven in the tutorial mission by abusing the infinite breadmaker machine and stacking bread endlessly. Other than that, no.
