Assume the availability all patches, expansions (Alien Crossfire, Brood War, Divine Wind), dlcs (Mask of the Betrayer, Serpent Isle), fan patches (2.13, Temple), fan mods (A Dance With Rogues, The Prophet, Nevada) and remakes.

If your choice is not present, I can add but only if you are serious about voting for it. I don't need recommendations for a best list that you aren't willing to vote for yourself. This is a list of the greatest, not some of the greatest. So don't bitch about Diablo 2 or Monkey Island not being on the poll unless you are willing to vote for it as the greatest.

Game must be available on the PC. Ports are acceptable.

Shit thread is shit, etc. but seriously it's either Thief: The Dark Project, Fallout, or Deus Ex. Ended up voting Deus Ex because reasons.

Jesus christ what the fuck is going on in the last third of that poll?
I did sort the games with the most likely 1st ballot games in the top 20, then the rest of the 1st ballot games, and finally the rest. You can tell by the dates.

I wanted millennial codexers to have some games they've actually played to vote for.

My personal top 20 ~
1. Sengoku Rance
2. Star Control 2
3. SMAC/X
4. Bloodlines
5. Sid Meier's Pirates!
6. GTA V
7. Baldur's Gate 2
8. HoMM 3
9. Temple of Elemental Evil
10. Jagged Alliance 2
11. Gabriel Knight - Sins of the Fathers
12. Planescape: Torment
13. Kichikou Rance
14. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
15. Rance X
16. Grim Fandango
17. Invisible Inc
18. Pool of Radiance
19. Civ IV
20. Lara Bow in: the Dagger of Amon Ra

Warcraft 3 - Frozen Throne. Maybe not for the content that Blizzard put together, but certainly for the custom maps and multiplayer.

OP should be immediately banned for not including Mafia 1, Arx Fatalis, NOLF 1, H&D and several other great games.

Like seriously, what the hell is Ass creed Origins and Dishonored 2 doing in that list?! You leave out the best and include sone of the most average games in the poll for the "greatest published games". Like GTA V ..WWWTTTFFF?!?!
Really shameful.
My pick is Baldurs Gate 2, all round the best published game.

Fuck off with these lists already. Fuck you fuck you fuck you.
Obviously it is Thief: The Dark Project. But since that is not on the poll, I voted Thief 2.

Deus Ex because it's cyberpunk.

On a more serious note, because it's a nice RPG that I got to play a few years ago and was amazed by how well it holds up. Must have been revolutionary back in 2000. It does need a graphical rework, though. At least for higher resolution support.

And because it's cyberpunk.

Not even a competition, the answer is Thief. The game is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. It set out to accomplish some very ambitious goals and succeeded in *every* one of them. It is an excellent simulation, an excellent game and an excellent storytelling all rolled into one, single integral whole.

The thing that comes nearest to it is Deus Ex and let me say this, to a chagrin of many, I assume, that Deus Ex does not do it as well despite being a great game in and itself.

Thief is the epitome of Show not Tell and it uses every power conceivable to games, sound, visuals and interaction to the fullest. A feat that has not been replicated since and pessimistically never again.
