Actually, Knockdown being overpowered seems realistic, and would pinpoint why we don't use giant 2 legged vertical tanks IRL, so it could be considered self-derision (same as AT-ST losing to a bunch of Barbarian teddybears because they have stability issues).
If BTech was about realism, we won't be using 'mechs...
Or shooting at no more than 225 meters with our long range missiles or whatever comically short range it was ;)
I had a good laugh at the mech commander manual even back in the day as a clueless youngster.
They did have some silly explanation for it, I think. I'm sure you remember better than I. Guidance technology limitations due to losing technology or some such?
Loss of targeting systems.

Basically, you aim everything by hand. From the cockpit of a giant robot. With weapons that could be anywhere on the robot. At targets moving up to 130kph. While you were bouncing around because your robot is running around at 130kph. And for lasers, you had to hold the laser on target for a period of time long enough to actually start melting the armour and/or doing damage to the enemy 'mech.

There is no such thing as "lock-on" for any weapon in the original BTech. You basically spray and pray with missiles (hence the Number of Missile Hit table), even LRMs (yeah, the missile launchers are basically missile based shotguns).

If anything, I thought the 630m range limit for LRMs were pretty darned long for something that could be sited a meter back and to the side and you aiming using a dot on the cockpit canopy.

<- getting flashbacks to arguments with people who scream about how "it is not realistic" when they were playing a fucking wizard in DnD who is in love with his fireballs.
I know, but I am not the one making a game where mechs have glaring stability issues :D
My point was that it was close to self-parody.
It would be like making a Space fighter game where pilots were reduced to a pulp because of acceleration.

BTW, how is the DPS with such a setup? I got fuck-all damage back then.
Should be pretty good. I didn't actually test that, though, I just tried shooting at the ground to see if everything fired as a group. But looking at the stats it should be pretty good. It's still not a great setup, though. IS lasers are annoyingly short ranged, and getting enough Clan lasers to make a full loadout with them will take a while.

Also mechpilots wearing no fucking jackets!
:brodex:

(that is another thing that really bothers me with HBS Battletech, every fucking pilot has way to much cloth on them, wtf, it is fucking hot in a Mech, like my fucking GPU because this game is so badly "optimized")

Well, to be fair, if you have a cooling system UNDER your clothing, you really want to be covered up as much as possible to keep the heat OUT. Therefore, if you have a cooling vest, you really want to have a heat resistant suit over it that is a bit inflated to allow for airflow within the suit even when you are moving about or sweating. The BTech bare skin thing doesn't work as well the developers think it does. Think of it as having your own personal air-conditioned room vs warmed torso + cooked limbs (and one of the cooked limbs being the head).

But ... but ... but ... it is against established BattleTech canon!

Said it was silly as there are better ways of doing things. Doesn't mean that I wouldn't put it in a BTech game :) Consider the cooling suit... LosTech.

It comes with the base game, it is pieces of equipment I should have named it "melee dmg equipment".
There are "Arm mods" that give +10 / +15 dmg to melee and "Leg mods" that increase DFA (death from above) dmg to enemy or reduce dmg taken to your own legs.
I found an "Arm Mod ++" that add 60 to melee damage. +M Might be worth creating a 'mech that has some long-range weapons but otherwise relies on punching the enemy.

the gun tied to the neck is beyond stupid
I don't see no gun in that pic, and I looked veeeeerrrrryyyyy closely indeed...

Oh, you mean the previous one? That is actually the communications cord. You can see it wind back up around the back. The gun is not tied to it. Just an illusion that the artist shouldn't have put in there.

Sup guys, we still talking about that Battletech game?

Myself, I gave up on it three or four main missions in.
Honestly, I am having a difficult time identifying who is this game intended for.

Tabletop fans aren't pleased with all the simplifications, or so I gather from the resident 'sperglings.

If you're queer for strategy, like yours truly, one lance per mission doesn't really offer too much complexity. Sure, you can diddle with loadouts a little bit, scour the galaxy for +++ weapons, etc,
but from what I saw, the depth of strategy boils down to knock a guy down and finish him off, rinse and repeat. Not a lot going on as regards electronic warfare as well.

For those who want a challenge; granted, I only did 3-skull missions, but it didn't feel very challenging unless you go ironman or some other form of challenge game. Bankruptcy was never a serious concern
unless you go way overboard with buying stuff with hefty upkeep. But then again, why would you? I don't see myself ever needing 16 mechwarriors in this game, nevermind 24.

Storyfags will get a bit of text to go through, with tootlip encyclopedia to boot, but does the writing really deliver? I remember rolling eyes pretty hard when they pulled the "they killed him, and then he got away, he still dieded tho".
The dialogues were nothing special, and I don't remember character background doing anything useful aside from false choice dialogues.

Biggest gripe I have with this game is that is seems intent on wasting my time. Combat turns take forever because all the 2-second delays between actions add up and become minutes. By comparison, I remember being shocked
by the Xenonauts 2 demo, so it is possible to be done with an enemy turn in a matter of seconds?
Unless something serious is done about it, I don't see myself going back to the game, much less paying money.
