Beamdog is looking for experienced programmers with a strong eye for design to help us build incredible new user experiences for classic Dungeons & Dragons titles. You'll get to help us bring classic Infinity Engine games to console, working alongside a team of designers and artists as we engineer an all-new way to enjoy these games. You'll work on cool new products for Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox One and more!

I'm sure console players were just waiting with anticipation to play Baldur's Gate 2 on their 4K television sets to see Beamdog's HD textures and models in their highest possible quality.

Cool new projects -> old games ported to consoles.

Baldur's Gate 2 on their 4K television

Forget that. Imagine reading.. I mean playing PST on the TV. Can't imagine something more exciting.

My reading of the job description is that the immediate purpose of the hire is for porting the IE games, with "cool new projects" dangled as a possible (fabulously optimistic) future possibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • - Work with a team of programmers as you ensure technical excellence in assigned projects.
  • - Development and maintenance of game code
  • - Extending game engines to support new kinds of user interactions and experiences
  • - Work with artists and designers to develop new game UX features and enhancements
  • - Porting of existing codebases to new platforms
  • - Development on any new Beamdog projects

"Any new Beamdog projects"

What must it feel like to enter the industry with hopes and dreams of creative self-expression and ending up at Beamdog where the flogging of very dead horses and the following desecration of their carcasses is the whole business model. I imagine their employees as empty husks, afraid to look into the mirror in the morning, for fear of their own cold dead eyes staring right back at them, into the empty voids where their souls might once have been.

Wait, I get to live in the Arctic and spend my days rewriting 20 year old code?

Sign me the fuck up.

Recently I've been really fed up with anything Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights.
At first I thought it was because these games have been debated to death, but then every time I see a new Beamdog announcement my desire to replay the BG games or play the NWN games lessens.

Beamdog is truly cancer.

Is there really a market for old-school cRPGs ported to consoles? What the fuck?

I asked myself the same thing when the PoE 1 console port was announced but at least it was a modern title that kinda could work I guess, but this?

They must have started development a while back, since there's already a preview of the upcoming console release of the first Baldur's Gate on YouTube:

People may be duped into buying enhanced editions, but who the fuck would buy inevitably terrible console ports of games meant to be played on PC?

Well they are following in the footsteps of the Kickstarter RPGs that got ported to console. Wouldn't surprise me if they end up just copying PoE's console UI. :P
