Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux will launch for 3DS on May 15 in the Americas and May 18 in Europe, publisher Atlus announced.

The turn-based RPG, an updated version of the 2009-released Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for DS, first launched for 3DS on October 26, 2017 in Japan.

Here’s an overview of the game, via Atlus:

About

A spatial distortion full of demons appeared in Antarctica, threatening to engulf the Earth in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. The United Nations responded by tasking a team of highly advanced specialists with piercing the anomaly and figuring out how to stop it from the source. Well, get ready to don your Demonica once again in this new expanded port: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Expect new story content, additional endings, a new dungeon to explore, and more in the return of this sci-fi tinged Shin Megami Tensei adventure.

Features

  • A Stranger Journey Back – In Strange Journey Redux, you play as a brave United Nations soldier investigating a spatial anomaly called the Schwarzwelt–a dome of dark energy that threatens to consume the world. Inside, you’ll find it home to a nightmare mirror of our own Earth, populated with demons dying to meet you. The game touts brand-new illustrations by Masayuki Doi, updated visuals, UI tweaks, and more to make this journey back into the Schwarzwelt… even stranger.
  • Additional Story Content and a Brand-new Character – You won’t be retreading the same nightmarish path as before because a brand-new character named Alex will play a major role in how the story unfolds. Much about her is a mystery, but there is one thing you know for sure: she’s got a bone to pick with you. Joining her are new demons you might recognize from other Shin Megami Tensei entries, new endings, and a new dungeon to die in–I mean, discover.
  • A True Shin Megami Tensei Adventure – With its twisted demonic sci-fi story, addictive demon-collecting fun, and multiple narrative paths to explore, Strange Journey Redux is an essential Atlus JRPG adventure that can’t be missed!

The new voice acting for the demons is amazing.

Also expert difficulty, thus far (on area 2), is harder than SJ, though that may change with the ability to equip all the subapps

The combat has a nice feel to it now, with more weight to the co-op attacks, and quick transitions on battle speed x2

New art for the MC & crew has been made needlessly bland.

And I think they might have simplified the demon compendium. I could have sworn SJ's had a full list of all demons, blocked out until unlocked.

Get it people it is legit fun game and amazing dungeon crawler unlike 99% other japanese ones. As someone who barely plays and find most of them boring this is the one you want to play.

Do you want a game with the best combat of the series but deeply flawed everything else (IVA), or a pure dungeon crawler with somewhat flawed combat that stands better as a whole package (SJ) ?

Bought Strange Journey since I was told the story in apo is shit and I am a storyfag (redux sounded better overall). Why is the combat in apo better than in redux?

strange journey is amazing, especially if you like first-person view dungeon crawling; it's still very good if you're just a standard SMT/jrpg fan, though. Waaaaaaaaaay better game than either SMT 4, or SMT 4: Apo.

play digital devil saga 1&2 if you really care about story. probably their best title for that. I find recent atlus title insulting (SMT4, persona 5...)

DDS1 and 2 are actually the only SMT games I have yet to play. I keep aiming to play them someday but I just keep forgetting to do it.

Well, and ...If, of course. I can't believe ...If hasn't been translated yet.

Also Devil Summoner 1 for japanese Saturn, which looks really good...

yeah it's nice. I personally prefered the first game than soul hacker. I found Nemissa in soul hacker annoying.

Strange Journey has dumb mechanics like requiring demons of the same alignment to execute a group attack thing (it's the gimmick that was supposed to replace press turn), a main character that is a "special case" in terms of available skills and stat progression rather than feeling like another demon and so on.

APO is a well done refinement over Nocturne's press turn and generally boss AI scripts are among the best of the series in how they react to buffs, debuffs and so on. It also fixed the Smirk mechanic introduced by IV and added a layer of depth to it by giving special effects to various skills when you smirk. And your main character doesn't feel like a waste of a party slot.

With that said, the combat in SJ isn't shit, it's just not as good as the height of the series. It's a more well balanced game because its worst elements would still hold up as average rather than just outright shit, whereas Apocalypse's story is just downright pure shit, levels are uninteresting to explore etc.

Hm, had no idea SMTIV:A combat was so good.

glad I haven't bought SMT4:A... I personally didn't mind having demons of the same alignment, kind of remind me of how SMT1(and 2 too?) if you were Law you couldn't use chaos demon. If you take your time with the game and try to capture all or most demon in the game, it really is not an issue.
this is what I did when I played the jp version of Redux and it was actually more fun to just take my time and collect demons.

How is having a bonus attack if you use demons from the same alignment ''dumb''? It's not meant to be a core fight mechanic, as the game can easily be done without using it, and it doesn't really do that much at all. Saying it was meant to replace press turn sounds silly, as press turn is a core mechanic around which combat revolves entirely. The bonus attack is more of a flavor thing as it harkens back to the old games, where you could use only demons which had the same alignment as you. I also don't see how the player character having his own stuff instead of demon abilities is ''a dumb mechanic''.

Seems like my hypothesis that people who criticize first-person crawlers don't actually understand them, or has any knowledge of past iterations, still holds true.

Both are not a dumb mechanic since guns are a unique effect which can trigger a weakness, dont know if later demons have that effect (probably). I am still in the first dungeon but just had a fight were I was facing three demons which continously used sleep on me and my demons, that meant without the combo attack in the short burst where I could do something I would have been fucked. Its not press turn but I wouldnt underestimate combos to quickly dispose of shit that could fuck you over with some status.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture
Handy this thread got rezzed, still playing through the original SJ, just got to Fornax. I forgot just how good it is.

One tip that once I started doing, made the game much better. /Return demons from your party that you don't want or need to get the XP once the enemies are almost dead. That way only your MC and the one you want to level get all the XP. It's old news I know, but I'm sure the game was balanced around doing this as I'm still around the lvl of the bosses and I can fuse demons that are actually useful against them.

For people who have played it, the co-op attacks only work if both alignments match yours? So Neutral/Law doesnt get an extra attack if I am neutral/neutral?
