Starting from turn 4; a quest will appear on Phase 2.
A "R" labeled quest; usually top one, with 2 kanjis, then 4 kanjis in name.

This one will send you into a short mission where, at the end, you find both Kentarou and Miki, preventing the gameover from turn 7.

You can still lose from losing cities, and getting your total casualities count above 50 though, so be carefull !

It will take me some time to upload images of all the cards and write the translations. If you have a list of characters you want translated fast, just let me know.

Hey, thanks for writing this up. There's not a lot of information on Rance X out there for people - at least that isn't filled to the brim with spoilers - so anything to help English only players is much appreciated. Hopefully this can be a resource for people.

Here's a few more tips that I've figured out that may help people:
  • Most quests have two bonus elements. Each turn there's a 50% chance that one of those elements will activate (you'll see the symbol flashing above the characters). All damage those characters do is now doubled. This is basically two attacks for the price of one, so it's worth strongly considering when picking characters. Some characters have skills that will make element bonuses activate at 100% each turn.
  • Each quest also has a bonus faction which is displayed next to the bonus elements (typically based on where the quest takes place - Helman characters get bonuses in Helman quests). That faction has a 50% chance to get "Boost" condition every turn, which makes their attacks 1.5 times as powerful. This can be raised to 100% chance with a medal perk. The only other way to get a Boost status is to wait 3 turns without acting (50% chance) or have a character with a special skill that gives Boost. It's worth noting, Boost damage stacks with element bonuses - in fact, all bonus damage typically stacks, which is a good thing to look out for when creating damage setups.
  • A unit's attack is derived from their own attack stat x 5, plus the total attack of their entire faction (I think that's the formula for their health contribution too). This is a good reason to rotate out units periodically instead of just sticking with your favorites; by leveling up weaker characters you're actually increasing the attack of your better characters. All characters get a small attack/hp bonus at level 10, 20, 40, & 80. Those levels are good milestones to aim for with some characters before rotating them (depending on where you are in the game). This really starts to show up with your demon units - once they're all decently leveled up they add insane amounts of attack & hp to their representative.
  • XP thresholds grow exponentially, meaning it's much easier to level up low leveled units. This is pretty basic, but it's really worth considering when deciding who to use your meal tickets on: you can level up a unit from 22 to 25 or level up a weak unit from 1 to 20. Due to attack/hp stacking mentioned above, generally more units at average levels is best (though it all depends on the circumstances of who shows up in the meal ticket box). Meal ticket XP is based on all XP that has been gained up to that point, so within a few turns that "1 to 20" will turn into "1 to 40."
  • Acquiring treasure chests works on a formula (which it displays when deciding if you get the chest): the first time a unit kills an enemy in a specific quest 50% is added (so rotate who's doing the killing too). For each time you didn't get a chest 10% is cumulatively added. Your units will have a "bonus to chest" percentage, from items and passives, which is also added. Finally, Overkill percentage is also added. Getting chests is central to doing well on your playthrough (it's the main way you're going to get characters) and Overkill is really the main way you have to influence it. It's usually worth getting the Medal perk that allows you to keep attacking after killing an enemy (it's in the bottom right) - with that you can get your Overkill closer to 50%, which guarantees a chest for a first time killer. Some units have skills that let you get a reward even if you miss the chest: typically meal tickets, monster captures, or item captures. For bosses, throw this out the window - bosses drop chests at 100% (though if someone's first kill is a boss, that's counted against them going forward).
  • Buffs, debuffs, and status ailments make a huge difference. Make an effort to figure out what each character is capable of doing in those departments, it can make some hard fights a breeze.
  • You only have so much AP to spend, so making a party of 7 damage dealers is really a waste. Figure out a few people who will do the best damage for that scenario, then try to fill out the rest of the team with people that can respond to buffs/debuffs or who can contribute passively - or better yet, both. (This is mainly for bosses. For normal fights, feel free to use whoever you want or whoever needs XP)

4chan's Rance thread has links at the top of the page for a guide on how to use a machine translation and image readers to translate menus/cards (poorly), as well as a translation of certain gameplay information. Just be careful if poking around in there - they're not shy about throwing spoilers around.

I'm currently farming monster girls, I found that in the second Helman mission vs Kesselring (not one-turned earlier), there's a section which teleports you back over and over:

mKxRm88.jpg

The trick is to save right before the encounter, since the game remembers which enemy it spawned. Warping back rests the enemy to a random one. I've farmed 11 monster girls so far within the past hour lol..

Disclaimer: I'm using cheat engine for infinite hp for this trick. I'm at 795 cards, and if the OP is accurate, I've ~400 more cards to go...

Some more hot tips:

  • During auto-battles it's possible to get 2 or even 3 times the experience. Doubled experience occurs when either 4 characters of the same element or 4 characters from the same faction show up (the characters will flash and a small message will appear above your characters). If Biscuit is one of the characters in there, she'll do this effect passively too. To get 3 times the experience, you need 5 characters from the same element/faction, or Biscuit's alternate card. 3 times experience/Biscuit alt will also produce an effect where your characters take no damage. It's rare but great when it occurs. I have no idea what 6 or 7 characters will produce, never seen it.
  • Also during auto-battles, you can automatically generate a chance to capture monster cards. This will happen when one of the characters is a generic Helman monster tamer (I think they're the only ones who can do this). They're the generic units wearing all white with weird white cloths on their heads. You can reroll which units participate in an auto-battle once (the blue button to the right of your characters). It's generally worth it to reroll to try to get one of the monster tamers or the experience bonus mentioned above.
  • As mentioned in someone else's advice, you shouldn't feel too much pressure to use characters like Martina Curry or Tillday's alt card to farm for food tickets in missions. There's usually 1 or 2 on the mission, so just producing one or two and keeping an eye out is enough, since any you get beyond 3 per mission is wasted. Where those characters really shine though is in the Preparation missions. These missions are almost always pretty short (often 3-5 fights) and usually there won't be any food tickets (maybe one). During this phase is when you really want to produce food tickets, it's a huge XP boost for your army during what's usually a throwaway phase.
  • Most units will have a level identified on their card - not the star value on the top left, but "Level XX" on the bottom. This has nothing to do with XP values, it's an indicator of how good a unit's stats will be once they gain experience. For example, a unit like Julia is level 3. Her attack/hp contribution is going to suck no matter how high she's leveled. Whereas Helman has a unique monster tamer who is level 53, even though he has no attack skill; but if he's leveled, he'll provide a lot of attack/hp to the faction. Something to keep in mind when deciding who to level up/give meal tickets to.
  • When deciding which units to pick in a treasure chest, think about what your army needs. Premium cards are usually a good choice just because they show up more rarely, but there are plenty of Common cards that are better - or at least, more useful - then Premium, or even Exclusive cards. It's hard to turn down rarer cards since you don't know when you'll see them again, but it's something to keep in mind. Also, generics can sometimes be more valuable than named characters. Healing is rare in the game, but Japan has 5 generic Mikos who are all capable of decent healing.
  • Some characters have attacks which deal bonus damage to a certain type of enemy. Leila, for example, has an attack that deals bonus damage to Hannies. This translates to double damage to that target. Like most bonuses though, it stacks. Use a Boosted Leila to attack a Hanny during an element bonus and you've now dealt 600% extra damage - 1200% if the unit was asleep, and even more if (etc., buffs, debuffs, etc.). It helps a lot to know the extra abilities of the cards.
  • The game should come with a manual you can view online. Using basic Google translate on the page is rough but still very helpful. The manual is pretty long (probably the longest manual a Japanese porn game has ever produced). If you want some clarity on things, take a few minutes, Google translate the manual, and read through it. It's likely to answer a lot of questions you would have.

And finally (mild spoilers):

  • There are over a dozen different endings to this game. The way you are going to acquire them is through choices made during gameplay - either during missions or by where you choose to prioritize. Most of these endings do not go well for humanity (I mean, they were on the ropes to begin with). So how do you figure out how to get a better ending? BY MAKING BAD CHOICES AND LEARNING! Seriously, I would strongly recommend against looking at a detailed walkthrough. Unless your fondest memories of gaming are looking at what someone wrote, then doing it, it's really going to suck the fun out of your experience. Each time you get a new ending you get a bonus for your next playthrough (as well as several bonuses from difficult achievements you may have acquired from gameplay). Try new routes, do different things, experiment, and have fun failing. Your cards will carry over to a bonus section on the menu, which can be used for challenge maps that will generate even more bonuses for your next run. It may seem like a slog sometimes, but take a break, reassess, and show the game the power of your Hyper Weapon. Gahahahaha!

Oh, and Jason Liang, here are some cards I found to be quite rare:

NSFW
PhPPUHG.jpg

R = row; C = column

The rarest of all is R2C1 Goddess Kenshin. I've only had her drop once from the day I started the game until now.

Special mention to
1) R1C5 The "ordinary girl" and her 2 parents which I don't have. I've forgotten which quest that was, but it rewarded me with 3 of them to choose. I still can't figure it out...
2) R2C4 Shiawase kyunkyun, which only starts appearing when you have >10 of the monster girls in a single playthrough..

I just quickly glanced through this and I'll definitely wait until a proper translation, especially if you guys aren't exaggerating about the difficulty. Sengoku Rance was plenty difficult enough for me already, can't believe people are slugging through this with crappy machine-translations.

I'm trying for the monster hunter achievement "達成(クリア時) タイニリーチE" so let me comment on that section of your tips:

- The Helman monster hunters can also capture in regular battle if they're on the team. The technique is to not overkill/high-overkill as much as possible, as getting the treasure chest will override any monster capture.
- >>Here's a list<< of most/all of the monsters in the game (jp wiki still under construction)
- And my monster collection so far! I think I'm only missing a couple now. About 1/4 are non-capture monsters though. Some spoilers for the latter part of the game:

Ha, I only have one of those, the super-rare Miracle Tou. I have around 450 cards total, from the first 15 turns, main continent only.

I'll have card translations up, I just want to test a little more and make sure I'm not spreading bad info first. The translation is more for story, you don't need it much for gameplay since you can more or less figure it out by trial and error. It helps to be at least a little familiar with Asian languages though, so that it isn't entirely unrecognizable gibberish.

I probably overhyped the difficulty a little, compared to SR, definitely the anti-thesis of popamole though. The difference is that SR becomes cake once you get Omachi (outside of say Orochi), whereas here you get Omachi-level characters but you sort of need them.

This game really a good game, so sad it's last rance game.

This game isn't hard like i thought, only need few hours to complete first run. I don't save any country so i got a bad ending.

I google to find a guide and I must say i am impressed with your work.

Good works, man.

Garfunkel, I think your approach is probably the more reasonable, patient approach. For the English audience waiting to experience the game for the first time in English, it will probably be a more enjoyable, simpler experience. For me, my concern is that it will probably take about 3-5 years for this game to be translated (likely closer to 5). No more fantranslations are coming since the Rance games went legit through Mangagamer, and before Mangagamer even begins thinking about Rance X they're going to be working on Rance 9, Rance 01, Rance 02, and Rance 03, as well as the official translations of Sengoku Rance and Rance Quest which are coming out this year. This is in addition to other translations of games from Alicesoft (the company putting out Rance games) that they're likely to put out too, such as Evenicle and Beat Blades Haruka which have already happened/are happening (there's almost certain to be a few more). And they've really only got two translators to work on those games (Arunaru and Tulip Goddess Maria), as well as dozens of non-Alicesoft games they put out per year. Oh, and the script for Rance X is absurdly large. So yeah... probably 5 years.

I am neither patient nor reasonable. All these workarounds are the only options available for people who want to try it now.

It helps a lot to have played games other than Sengoku Rance - if that's the only Rance game someone has played then they're likely to be very confused. Having played the other English Rance games like Rance 5D, Rance 6, or especially Kichikuou Rance - which this game is largely based on - will take away much of a player's confusion with the story. Otherwise you're going to have to spend a lot of time in the wiki. This game is the culmination of 9 games worth of storytelling (story which is much better than a japanese porn game deserves).

But I'm a little shocked at how much I'm able to get with translation tools. VNR works decently enough to give you a sense of what's happening and using the OCR Capture2Text helps to translate menus and cards enough so that I'm rarely confused. Not ideal but definitely doable.

Oh, and vitaminz! Any items your characters acquire are automatically used, so long as a person from that faction is present. Chaos gives Rance's faction a set attack bonus. So long as a Rance faction character is in use, that bonus is automatically applied to their individual attack, nothing else needs to happen. There are plenty of other items for other factions, usually giving a set hp/attack bonus or some kind of percentage bonus (the stats on the right side of the screen that are red, green, and blue track the total of these). Those are things like bonuses to defensive %, abnormal status resist %, experience bonus %, extra chance to get chest %, etc. The manual the game comes with has a section on this - use google translate on it and it should clear a lot of that up. (the % bonuses are small - usually 1 to 3 - but they add up over time and when damage values get bigger those small percentages can make a difference).

New Game+ bonuses are:

  • Top Row: +1 CP to start with on your next playthrough. These are the medal bonuses and probably your first target on your first NG+ so you can unlock 7 characters earlier
  • Row 2-3: +50% experience from battles. Good for later runs where you think you might get a further ending.
  • Row 4 TWO ON LEFT SIDE: I have no idea. Anyone else help?
  • Row 4 TWO ON RIGHT SIDE: Each one gives your characters +5 stars when they are recruited from chests. Getting them both means any character you get starts at 10 stars. This is very helpful and makes your army much stronger, maybe throw points at it after you've got enough NG+ points for 2-3 extra CP first.
  • Last bonus: I think this lets you import any cards you've already acquired. I think they start at star level zero though, not sure.
  • ***Check marks: Top one imports any meal ticket events you've already seen. I think bottom one unlocks "Hard Mode" - definitely not something to check until you've got a ton of NG+ points.

I don't mind waiting and if SR comes out officially in English, I'll buy and replay it. I haven't played the other Rance games, so I might do that too. Five years goes by in a whiff!

KingDoofus,

Row 4 two left side (EXPUP上昇 ★ランク+1) is, Everytime you pick up an EXPUP crystal all the leaders will automatically get +1/+2 ★Rank

Also, hard mode lets you choose 2 cards instead of just 1 from chests, so there's that tradeoff for collectors! The last bonus is not for importing (you always start with just Rance and Sill) but automatically unlocking most non-gated cards right off the bat, eg. JAPAN youkai, the maids, some midgame country officers, etc. This is a dangerous option to use when you're at ~850 cards where acquisition really plateaus, since it dramatically dilutes the pool you're fishing in.

Oh, I recommend you having played as much of the earlier series as possible before you play X. 02, 03 (or the old 3), and VI, at least, since there are important callbacks to those games.

This game really a good game, so sad it's last rance game.

Edit: Any tips for New game + Bonus?

Only one of the four "A" endings ("breakthrough") needs New Game+ CP to be achieved. I've beaten the main quest through "sea" and "sky" routes with 0 CP bonuses, and unlocked the "true ending" part of the game, and I know that "land" route is also possible with 0 CP. I have little interest in replaying the main quest over again starting with absurd bonuses. So I disagree with people who are advising that the way to beat the game is by getting bad endings and then starting over with CP bonuses. I don't see the fun in that. The game is balanced to be played through without them.

Game Endings tips

This part's spoilery and there's also basic information on the Alicesoft wiki, but here's some more information on getting the game endings.

General Information
rx070.png

1. The main quest has four "A" endings, "Sea", "Land", "Sky" and "Breakthrough." However, the quests needed for "Sky" and "Breakthrough" wont appear until after you've finished another "A" ending (or possibly "B" ending) like "Sea" or "Land." Just like the Takeda Assassination in Sengoku Rance, once you've beaten the game by "Sea" or "Land," you can go back to a previous save and the quests for "Sky" and "Breakthrough" will appear retroactively.

So in other words the first time you beat the game you must be on the "Sea" route (easier) or "Land" route (more difficult). Then you go back to a turn 10 or turn 11 save and beat the game with "Sky" route (if you want or need to beat the game on a different route).

On the 1st page of your Achievements collection, you can see all the endings. The top four are "Sea" route, "Sky" route, "Breakthrough" route and "Invasion" (land) route.

2. In addition, the game has a 2nd Quest which is unlocked by achieving 5 sidegoals during "A" route playthroughs. You don't need to do all 5 sidegoals on the same playthrough- if you miss one, you can unlock the achievement later in a different "A" route playthrough. You can see these sidegoals on the bottom of the 2nd page of your Achivements, with the "A" in the title.

The five sidegoals are-
- Four nations survive
- Defeat Kaybliss
- Save Hornet
- Find the Soul Transfer Center
- Pope wish wasn't used (the Pope is Crook Mofus)

Once you have these five sidegoal achievements unlocked, you'll be able to start 2nd Quest games.

"Sea" Ending
1. The "Sea" ending is by far the most likely first "A" ending you can achieve. To unlock the quests for the "Sea" ending, you must do one of these two things-

a. In the 1st Free Cities campaign when you can choose to go with Maria to Custom or to go to M Land with Copadon, Shizuka and Satella, if you go with Copadon (and get the free Shizuka card) you'll unlock the quest for the "Sea" route.

b. If you went with Maria instead, a Base phase quest will appear and Copadon Dott will ask you about building a Navy. You must refuse her (2nd option, do NOT go into the blue pool) to unlock the "Sea" route.

If you do neither of these things, you wont get the quest for the "Sea" route.

2. On turn 12, when the sea level rises, you'll get the quest for the "Sea" route.

3. During the Shangri-la quest, when you can choose to either H Shariela or bully Kaybnyan, you should choose to H Shariela. If you do, you'll receive Shariela's card before you fight Kaybliss, and she makes the fight MUCH easier (without her the fight is extremely difficult). Shariela is in the nonhuman faction so you wont be able to use your Kalar characters if you use her.

4. During the sea route, you'll have the option of fighting one of the Kaiju (one of the four monsters that hold up the Continent - like Orochi from Sengoku Rance).

5. You'll finish the main quest on turn 13.

"Land" Ending
1. To get the "Land" ending, all 4 nations must be completely liberated by the end of TURN 13. Then you'll see a pre-turn event and get the quest to invade the Monster Realm directly. However, if you invade on turn 15, you'll be too late and get the fight Demon King Kaybliss instead.

2. It's very difficult to liberate all four nations by the end of turn 13 and you must not waste a single prep phase. In general it's necessary to -
- Stop the Demon Army reinforcement as soon as possible by conquering Shangri-la as soon as possible
- Reinforce the army immediately as soon as those options become available in prep or base phase
- Liberate one of the countries as soon as possible so that they will send reinforcements to the other countries
- You must one-turn at least one country as soon as possible. That means you must defeat the hard version of the first Demon boss (defeat them the first time you fight them) which then allows you to fight and defeat the hard version of the second Demon boss. On a first playthrough, it's feasible to either one-turn Helman (defeat both Babolat and Kesselring) on turn 3, or one-turn Zeth (defeat both Galtia and Medusa) on turn 5.
- Two countries must self-liberate. To self-liberate-
a. All the Demon bosses for that nation must be defeated
b. The human army must have greater numbers than the demon army
c. The human army must have the advantage
d. The demon army must have < 10k troops.

The country to you one-turn will self-liberate by turn 13 if you make reinforcing the army a priority and you stop the monster reinforcements asap. To self-liberate a second nation, you should reinforce a nation with 10k troops (during the prep phase) the turn that you kill the 2nd Demon boss, or the turn immediately afterwards. You must not allow the Demon army to regain the advantage. If you do this correct, that nation should self-liberate 2-3 turns afterwards.

"Sky" Ending
You can't get the quests for the "sky" ending until you've completed "Sea" or "Land" ending.

1. After you get Patton's Toushin Toshi on turn 8, you'll see a Prep phase mission with Cantel (Hanty's White Dragon). You must do this mission on turn 11 at the latest.

2. You'll then get a short Operations phase mission (with "2" in the title) where you can fight either Tropos or Anise. You must choose to fight Tropos, not Anise.

3. Then you'll get a prep phase mission on turn 12 to use Toushin Toshi to move Rance Castle into the Monster Realm. If you do all the Sky route prep and operation phase quests, you'll reach Kaybliss' Castle on turn 14.

4. This quest is almost identical to the 2nd part of "Sea" route with only a few differences (you don't get a recovery after fighting Stragonoff in "Sky" route, for example).

5. Like "Sea" route, H Shariela in Shangri-la and getting her card will help you a lot against Kaybliss.

6. Again, this route occupies turns 11, 12, 13 and 14 almost entirely, so you must have everything else you want done by end of turn 10. If you are going back to a previous save and need to do a side-quest like the Poppins Tunnel, you must go back to an end of turn 9/ start of turn 10 save.

"Breakthrough" Ending
The quest for this ending only appears on turn 10.

"True" Ending
1. To rescue Hornet, you must complete the 1st Leazas campaign and recruit either Silky or La Hawzel by turn 7. You must rescue Hornet by end of turn 8.

2. Once you enter the Monster City, you must defeat 4 Demon Army fights consecutively within 7 battle turns total or else you'll fail. That means you must defeat the first fight in 1 turn, and the 3 other fights in 2 turns. You can use an Assassinate ability to beat the first fight (Dan Dossky has a 2AP Assassinate ability), but that doesn't work on the 3 other fights. The best way is to build up Kentaro as soon as you get him and build a dedicated Light damage team that can maximum damage with 4 or 5 AP. Characters to watch for include Krutche Muffin and Alex Valse.

3. To find the Soul Transfer Center, you must take the Poppins Tunnel quest during the Operations phase. It doesn't matter whether or not you fight either Masuozwe (the Hanny Demon boss) or the Stone Kaiju. When you get towards the end of the Poppins Tunnel quest, choose to keep digging deeper. You'll eventually fight a wall that can only be hurt by 200k damage attacks. When you break that wall you'll find the Soul Transfer Center.

4. To not use Crook Mofus' pope wish, you must find the Wenlina character card before Rance fights Arios at 30% casualty. If you have Wenlina's card, she will restore Rance to life. Otherwise, Crook will use her wish to resurrect Rance.

The easiest way to get Wenlina's card is during the quest to find Miki. The two ??? tiles in that quest randomly have a chance to encounter Wenlina. You should keep reloading until you get Welina's card (NOT the Willis card, the Seracholoras card, or the Parsley Rig Zeth (ghost) card.

5. Do NOT H Wenlina during the Base phase, or she'll lose her power and wont be able to heal Rance.

6. Do NOT use Crook's wish on a rare Sea Shell during the Base phase.
