CHRONO TRIGGER is OUT NOW on Steam!

Surrrrrrprise! We’ve decided to both announce AND release CHRONO TRIGGER today on Steam!

OK, so if you’re reading beyond that last line then you probably want to know what CHRONO TRIGGER is (beyond my humble opinion that it’s one of the best games ever made).

To give you a glimpse at the characters, music and gameplay in CHRONO TRIGGER, check out the launch trailer right here:

CHRONO TRIGGER is a JRPG originally developed by who we affectionately dub the ‘Dream Team’, consisting of:
  1. The creator of the DRAGON QUEST series: Yuji Horii
  2. The creator of the DRAGON BALL series: Akira Toriyama
  3. The creators of the FINAL FANTASY series, including Hironobu Sakaguchi
Here’s a quick introduction to the story for you:
A chance encounter amid the festivities of Guardia's Millennial Fair in Leene Square introduces our young hero, Crono, to a girl by the name of Marle. Deciding to explore the fair together, the two soon find themselves at an exhibition of the Telepod, the latest invention by Crono's longtime friend Lucca. Marle, fearless and brimming with curiosity, volunteers to assist in a demonstration. An unanticipated malfunction, however, sends her hurtling through a rift in the dimensions. Taking hold of the girl's pendant, Crono bravely follows in pursuit. But the world into which he emerges is the one of four centuries before. Journey to the forgotten past, the distant future, and even to the very End of Time. The epic quest to save a planet's future makes history once again…

If you’ve had the pleasure of playing CHRONO TRIGGER before, then you’ll be pleased to find out that this version includes animated cutscenes, as well as the Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum dungeons from previous versions of the game. We’ve also updated the controls, graphics and sound to make this the definitive version of CHRONO TRIGGER!

Finally, there’s also a Limited Edition available, you have until the 2nd of April 2018 to pick it up, and it includes the following bonus content:
  1. An enchanting and specially edited CHRONO TRIGGER medley consisting of 5 songs: Far Off Promise, Wind Scene, Battle with Magus, Corridors of Time and CHRONO TRIGGER.
  2. Composer Yasunori Mitsuda’s digital liner notes.
  3. A collection of 6 stunning wallpapers for your PC (Sizes: 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024, 1920 x 1080, 2560 x 1600).

If you have any questions about the game then I’ve created a Q&A announcement post here[sqex.to] which should hopefully answer your questions!

For now though I’ll wish you all the best with CHRONO TRIGGER. Please let us know what you think of it in the comments below, especially if it’s your first time playing the game (in which case you’re in for a treat!)

And it's a horrible mobile port. Why is it so hard for squeenix to do anything?

Their Final Fantasy XII PC port was pretty good.

But yes, their old SNES-era ports are so lazy it's almost like they make them terrible on purpose.

I agree with this and was actually quite surprised by its overall quality (except for some problems with pre-rendered cut-scenes).

One of the few times where the comparison is accurate and not an exaggeration for the lulz. Crono's mom looks angry when she wakes him up because the filter fucked up her eyebrows.

By the way, there's more comparisons if you click on the tweet.

I really don't get why people even care. Is it the warm, fuzzy feeling of not having pirated a rom or what?

Mainly people care because newcomers purchase it and their first experience is this misrepresentative, inferior, cash-grabbing piece of shit.

But personally I get off on this, as someone that thinks CT is the most overrated piece of shit of all time. Just kidding, sort of. I played it a few years back and while it was charming it had one unforgivable catch: the gameplay had zero merit. It would have been much better as an animated cartoon with occasional dialogue choices/choose your own path choices in a SNES cartridge. The gameplay damages the experience, even, by just being boring filler. An exception for one or two of the mini-games perhaps.

It's shit like this why people unfairly hate on JRPGs as a collective.

This is just straight up disrespect for customers, they think people who buy games on the PC are the same people who buy shit on mobile appstores.

I don't think I would manage to come up with a combination of shaders and filters that is as shitty as what they've applied even if I tried, and the interface is simply awful beyond words. Also, is sprite tiling a lost arcane art that they couldn't find anyone in the company that would be able to stretch those backgrounds into a different aspect ratio without looking like someone copy-pasted them with mspaint?

What a shame. These companies have a mountain of incredible legacy material that they can re-release with great fanfarre to gullible weeabo buyers who are willing to shell out infinite shekels, and they come up with this low effort shit? Hahaha.

Where do you draw a line though? Dragon Dogma, Dark soulds are well received in here for example
Why are you mentioning those games? Dragon's Dogma was a great port that runs natively at 4k 60fps on any recent videocard (the original game ran at sub 30 fps 80% of the time at less than 720p) and even though Dark Souls is usually thought of as being a bad port, it's still at least equal to the original version (and infinitely better with one simple mod), which this shoddy maiming of Chrono Trigger certainly isn't. I don't see your point.

What hobbyist programmer is going to be dumb enough to fix this with "mods" (helping Squeenix make money off this turd) as opposed to just telling people to go install Higan.

What hobbyist programmer is going to be dumb enough to create dsfix as opposed to just telling people to get console

To start anew, where do you draw a line

There was no way to play Dark Souls on PC prior to the PC release. There are like 1400 different SNES emulators you can use to play Chrono Trigger better then this port does, not to mention Playstation and DS emulators if you prefer those versions. Comparing Dark Souls and DSFix to this is fucking retarded.

I own the original cart for Chrono Trigger, the PS1 rerelease, the DS rerelease, and the game on virtual console on the Wii. I've played through two different fan translations just to see the differences in the script. At one point when I was still in school and had a shitload of time I even maxed all the characters levels and stats by replaying the first few hours over and over again for stat up items. And even with all that and no intention of buying the game again I'm still pissed off at Squeenix for botching the port of a beloved classic and my favorite console game of all time.
