Out of curiosity - how many achievements he unlocked?
I know ToME have insane amount of them, yet it's not like those cheap made indie garbage (Zup series for example) with hundreds or thousands "achievements" unlocked when they beat the game.

I was tempted to do a rerun of all the early Mario games this year, but was unsure what system would play them and what gear one needs. Do you have to run the gauntlet of second hand stuff at potentially high prices or is there a modern means to just plug and play them all on one machine quite quickly and cheaply like we do with gog/steam PC games?

If you don't wanna just play it on PC via emulator - there's no 'all-early-Mario-games-bundle', Super Mario All-Stars compilation is closest to it though, you can buy SNES cart or Wii edition but dunno how cheap/expensive they are now.

On Steam:

Shantae: Half-Genie Heroe (including DLCs)
The Evil Within 2
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (GOTY nº1)
The Vagrant (to the end of the EA)
One Finger Death Punch
The Crow's Eye
RIVE
Unrest
Resident Evil Remake (again, but in HD this time)
The Cat Lady
Thimbleweed Park (meh)
The Consuming Shadow (if you like Lovecraft try it)
Mystic Belle (replay, with Turbo mode this time)
Tomb Raider: Anniversary (again)
Dead Cells (to the end of the EA)
NieR: Automata
20XX (EA)
Botanicula
Kathy Rain
Yomawari: Night Alone (only survival horror that actualy scared me a little in years)
Milkmaid of the Milky Way
The Floor is Jelly
Belladona
Saucer-Like
Splasher (very good! Much better Meat Boy-like than The End is Nigh)
AR-K: The Great Escape (it was shit)
Bayonetta (awesome game)
GIGA WRECKER
Alwa's Awakening
GoNNER
The Age of Decadence (again...)
Rochard
ICEY
Mushihimesama
Sonic Generations

And I almost finished and I'm going to finish:

Goetia
NightCry
The End is Nigh (meh, not going to finish this one)
If not for crashing mid game: Snake Pass (incredible 3D platformer, with a very nice and original idea well executed. It's not a "joke game", as I feared at first)

On GoG:

Hollow Knight (GOTY nº2)
Blade of Darkness (replay)
Cuphead (GOTY nº3)
Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav
Dark Eye: Memoria
Fran Bow
Hyper Light Drifter
Dracula: The Resurection
Dracula 2: The Last Sanctuary

On the PS2:

Haunting Ground (replay, awesome game)
Clock Tower 3 (replay, what a joke...)
Primal

On the Wii:

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (replay)
Donkey Kong Country: Returns (replay)

For free:

AM2R (replay)
Castlevania: The Lecarde Chronicles 2
No One Lives For Ever (replay, still awesome)
Heavy Metal: FAKK 2 (replay, still good)
Legend of Kyrianda 2: Hand of Fate (not bad at the beginning, piece of shit later)

... and a bunch of hentai games. Some of them were surprisingly not bad at all.

I probably forgot some. It was a good year, but not for RPGs.

Dishonored 2

Really enjoyed it. They did a good job giving you more non-lethal options (combat chokes, non-lethal drop takedowns, more non-lethal gear). I'm not a particularly good stealth player and I don't like savescumming. Last time I tried ghosting in Dishonored I had a terrible time (and I refuse to use dark vision). Shame about it not running so well on PC.

Prey

Excellent in some respects, no so good in others. Fighting mimics was very fun, but the excessive garbage collection to build items got annoying fast.

Sniper Elite 4

Probably my favorite game from this year. It's much improved from 3. The maps are fun to explore, and it has a nice mix of stealth and action: use stealth to put yourself in a good sniping position and get some. If you play it make sure to do so in authentic difficulty and remove every UI marker. Usually games that have UI markers are not actually balanced to be played without them, even if you are given the option to remove them, but not so here. One of the few games where traps are useful.

House of the Dying Sun

A bit short, but really good, and you can replay the missions in fun new ways to get 100% completion, which I usually never do. Bombing runs on capital ships are very cool, you can enter tactical mode to see your nukes reaching the target.

That's it, I played a whole bunch of other games that I really enjoyed but for one reason or another I didn't finish (I played almost 40h of Nioh and I'm not nearly done). I spent way too much time on PUBG, to play with some friends. Despite the obvious ARMA influence, it's not very good, because you spend too little time shooting, and even stalking, compared to lots of time looting and walking around. It's addictive, but rarely satisfying, which I suppose is how multiplayer games tend to be nowadays.
