Really surprised at the Elex love. Or has it been such a mediocre year that it simply rises to the top of the pot of drek like pond scum?

Whatever that would be it is definitely not DOS2 or Elex. Whoever voted for those games is a reddit tier dumbfuck.

Check out the Elex thread, there are hundreds of pages of mostly positive stuff since release. Or just read Roxor’s review.

But I hear you. I liked Elex, yet I can’t bring myself to vote for it or any of these others as RPG of the year.

Really, Fallout: Nevada’s rough English translation was the best by far.

Regarding W1, It's more of an action adventure. More like Zelda than Fallout. Character development almost doesn't exist, combat is entirely twitch...

It may not have as deep customization as fallout 1/2, but within the witcher theme you can play as warrior/alchemy specilaist or even mostly as a mage. It definitely is stats based - stats and equipment have a greater influence on combat outcome than just twitch/timing the hits.
Here's an easy example. The father of RPG is D&D and it's turn based. Hence if its offspring are not turn based, they are not even contestants. I'll accept action adventure with RPG elements.

BOT THAY HAVE CHEESEROLLS. So what. A lot of things have dicerolls in life, doesn't mean they're rpg.

Currently playing West of Loathing. The vote will have to wait until after that playthrough.

Interesting to see that Elex and Grimoire are still neck and neck for 2nd place. Expeditions has passed Torment, which is a good outcome.

I'd say it's the best one on the list, even though combat is way too easy (and that coming from a guy who sucks at RPG combat). Puzzles on the other hand are quite hard and fuckupable, which is a nice change of pace. And it absolutely nails exploration, which I didn't think was possible in a comedy game.

Wandering the world randomly in search of maps
Expeditions, Alvora tactics, Starcrawlers, Monster's den, even Willy-Nilly Knight

-Expeditions is on my list, haven't tried it yet
-Didn't like alvora's predecessor
-Got bored with Starcrawlers, forgot it existed
-Never heard of the last two

I'm pretty lukewarm on all the indie trash and shovelware in general.

Well I played Expeditions Viking and I was really getting into it. So of course it starts crashing repeatedly with no solution. I can't have nice things.

That's too bad. If nothing else works, perhaps try to temporarily play that or an earlier save on a different machine and return to your regular one after getting through the problem area. One advantage of these smaller games is they usually have modest system requirements and may run on spare/older hardware.

How is Expeditions: Viking compared to Battle Brothers?

I am playing the latter right now and while it's a bit like Darklands super-lite (I mean SUPER lite) it gets repetitive and boring in a very short time. Does Viking have more varied events/missions/skills?

Vikings is more of a traditional rpg. I wouldn't even compare the two, to be honest.

I finished Vikings while i played BB for a few hours and got bored. Vikings is about the conquest of Britannia around the end of 8th century. It is pretty fun game with a little bit annoying time mechanic. It is a good turn based rpg with interesting CC. Would highly recommend giving it a try,go watch some YT gameplay to get better idea.

BB and Expeditions: Viking are a fair amount different. E:V plays much more like a tradition RPG. I'm a big fan of it.

Thank you, guys; I bought Vikings and it is excellent so far.
And it also doesn't mess around and seems pretty hard from the very start. And the writing is nice!

Not really surprised Codex picks D:OS2 over Elex though at least it's 2nd. I feel like a Democrat in Arkansas sometimes (figuratively).

You're not surprised that a turn-based mechanics-led PC game is leading a codex poll against an action, console-oriented roll-around-the-floor game? Good, thank heavens for that! I was worried you'd been locked away in the politics forums for so long you still thought it was 2015...
