Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture
So despite the irregular capitalization in the title that is triggering me slightly, this just got released on our favourite porn shovelware download platform and the reviews that describe is as similar to Trails of Cold Steel have got me interested.

Any Codexers got any feedback to give on this one? I gather it's a remaster but I've never heard of the original game I must admit.

'Persona without the Personas' is how I read one description. That doesn't sound like a positive to me, but the guy recommended it anyway.

The irregular capitalization triggers me also.

Isn't this an "action-rpg"? I just saw "high school" an read "action rpg" somewhere and immediately dismissed it. If it is turn-based I would definitely reconsider, since I am a big Falcom fan.

it's not turn based. I'm demoing it now and it's cold steel in tokyo but with action combat where you jump and dodge and shoot at monsters and rack up sick combos etc.

also towa a cute

So is this anything like Xanadu Next? Looking at the videos and screenshots I guess the atmosphere won't be somber and fairytale-like, which was great in Next. The gameplay looks kind of similar, just not isometric 3d. They seem to have recycled a bunch of ToCS stuff, like models, animations and menus :lol:

Been playing a couple hours and seems fun enough. The port and the localization are very competent so far. Havent' played Xanadu Next or Cold Steel before so i can't compare. The story reminds me of Persona and the city exploration of the Yakuza games. The gameplay isn't amazing but it gets the job done.
I do hope we eventually get some incest action with the cousin, otherwise

Hi, Beta tester here.
- Estimated playtime 90 hours (90% completion), without NG+ (needed for throphy and optional dungeons)
- Game' setting and world building : persona like
- Story and Naration : kiseki like
- Combat mechanics : YS VIII like
- Animation 3d model : the model desain itself great more like Akiba's trip though the animation (outside battle) feel clunky (persona 4 golden better for animation)
- Enviromental textures : this the only area feels like impacted by vita limitation.
- Port quality: 60 fps locked (very stable on exclusive FS), unlock resolution tested up to 4k.
- Translation Quality: decent enough (better than YS VIII and persona 5 for me)

9/10

If you haven't played other Falcom Action RPGs, don't let this be your first. It's fine enough, though.

This has been heavily discounted on Steam as part of the sale on Japanese games. I bought it, haven’t got far as the combat yet but it is using the TOCS 1 and 2 engine with similar menus.

I have finished this - thoughts are:

  • Translation has been fixed up quite a lot from the original version Aksys released with the non eX+ version. There is still the odd error but it is now passable;
  • As Rean said it heavily utilizes the ToCS1/2 engine and also re-colours of enemies from that game as well;
  • This is not anything like Xanadu Next which was a dungeon crawler - this is very much a linear timer (you get bonus points for finishing on time) action game with non linear story bits in between.
  • They also try and make each scenario as if it is a different anime episode, so there is a splash intro is repeated each section in the game which some people will find weird
  • The action plays well (almost more fun than Ys) and I say this as a person that is not into action game. One thing to note on this; it was designed to play on the PS Vita controller - it is hard to get comfortable keyboard controls for this (I play with a plug in x-box controller);
  • Bonding events occur but there is no real conclusive romance and I find this more comfortable. The girl I felt was the best (Sort of a mix of Emma (Brains, Bust -size) and Claire (Control and Temperament) from Kiseki is sort of implied to be with another character in eX+ so that was a bit disappointing, but it is not a big part of the game anyway so no big deal there.
  • On character comparisons with Kiseki - these characters are not Cold Steel characters. There is no Alisa, Elliott etc... and importantly the main character is not Rean, doesn't lack confidence and doesn't make long winded speeches (and often doesn't mince his words either). Like Kiseki, many characters have hidden agendas that only rise right at the end of the game....
  • The theme running through the game is "Greed" - the enemies are called Greeds and much of the story's premise for the action that occurs is the greed of characters that materialises itself in the challenges we face. This is taken to its extreme interpretation in the normal ending....
  • There are two endings - normal and special, although I think of it as the Eastern/Continental European and the Anglo-American/Hollywood endings. I personally find the normal ending (although bittersweet) would have been a great place to end it, but I can imagine the fans not wanting that. The other ending feels like an apology for these fans, and in the original TX it kind of felt like undermining the premise of the story. In the eX+ edition IMO they add a bit more to try and undo this undermining.

Finally picked this up for cheap from Fanatical and just finishing up my 100% run and doing the eX+ part on Infinite Calamity.The game wasn't too bad to be honest, certainly has kept me entertained for the 60 or so hours I've put in it.

Feels like a mishmash of ToCS (and Persona) like socializing between the stage based combat portions. The story was pretty so-so, I was expecting to be more annoyed by the school setting initially than I actually was, which was a pleasant surprise. I would've probably preferred the initial ending as well.

The combat felt super clunky at first to be honest. Once you get the jist of it, get all the mechanics opened and start dodging more offensively it becomes pretty nice in the end. Definitely needs to be played on Nightmare/Calamity from the get-go though, can't imagine how easy it is on lower difficulties. While getting all the stages to S grade and all greeds & treasures was pretty fun, they did get super repetitive pretty fast. They were putting different kinds of mechanics here and there to spice it up (that some times lasted a stage or two then never to be seen again), but in the end you were mostly running through very similar corridors.

The soundtrack was... weird. Half the time I was guessing that was this song already on a Cold Steel soundtrack. Still pretty much Falcom quality. I absolutely love this song from the eX+ soundtrack though, did the stage associated with it a few times just to listen to it.
