The developer and IP acquired by the publisher THQ Nordic: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl...veloper-experiment-101-acquired-by-thq-nordic

THQ Nordic has acquired Swedish games studio Experiment 101 for an undisclosed sum.

The developer is currently working on open-world RPG Biomutant, a title that THQ Nordic announced it was publishing back at Gamescom in August. The publisher has also acquired this IP along with its creator.

Experiment 101 was co-founded in 2015 by Stefan Ljungqvist, who previously worked as art director and game director at Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios.

All of Experiment 101's shares are now owned by THQ Nordic, making it the fourth studio the publisher has based in Sweden alongside Mirage Game Studios, Foxglove Studios and Pieces Interactive.

The publisher also owns German studios Grimlore Games and Black Forest Games, as well as former THQ developer Rainbow Studios in Phoenix, Arizona (previously known as THQ Digital Phoenix).

Biomutant is due for release on PS4, Xbox One and PC, although no launch date has been given. THQ Nordic has promised more information in 2018.

THQ Nordic was previously known as Nordic Games before it purchased the branding of the defunct publisher. We spoke to the firm's Reinhard Pollice earlier this year about how it plans to build a successful publishing brand out of a failed one.

Will this be the fate of Piranha Bytes, I wonder?

Well, for better or worse:

Piranha Bytes really wants to be independent so I doubt they would let them. Elex made decent money from what I gather, probably around 150,000 copies sold on PC and maybe 100,000 on consoles and the game's budget was rather low so they probably broke even. I hope anyway. THQ Nordic is a good publisher so it really wouldn't be the worst that could happen, if they got acquired by Deep Silver when they did Risen, that would have been much worse.

THQNordic has thus far with ELEX proven to be a pretty good publisher. I don't know what them acquiring IPs entails, but it seems they are willing to let a developer that appeals to a niche audience do what they think is best. I guess time will tell.

Oh, good. Maybe THQ will make them add romances. You know, for mass market appeal like in ELEX.

And where does all those money come from I wonder?

From a brief search, the founder has some invest company, and is an entrepreneur who owns multiple enterprises including THQ Nordic and comics/art collector, heh.

The trick is to never give up

It all began long ago with comic books, but while his friends were reading them, Lars chose to sell them. And he sold so well that at the age of 15, he was Sweden’s leading mail order retailer. Lars then capitalised on the experience from his comic book sales to take on the next product segment, second-hand video games, with his company Nordic Games Holding. This company also grew and was acquired by a British games giant in the middle of the IT boom. As it turned out, however, they invested in e-commerce a bit early – not unusual at the time.

Lars subsequently bought back the Nordic part and embarked on an amazing journey which today lives on in the company THQ Nordic AB. Along the way, Lars has capitalised on the entire learning curve – the good and the less positive experiences – because they’ve all lead to new ways of thinking. This natural optimism means Lars is open to taking risks. ”We get better over time only by challenging ourselves,” he claims, and adds: ”Sometimes the return is instant, but often it takes time. The trick is to never give up”.

I don't know, besides the furry shit (which looks to be better executed than most such things), this actually looks pretty cool.

Furries are zoophiles who like to masturbate to half-animal pornography. They have no justification. They get hot when they see animal people, occasionally dropping the "people" part. Some of them wish they were animals themselves, but most are content to dress up as animals and have sex. Either way, every single one of them is broken inside.
Some furfags claim that they have no sexual interest in animals whatsoever, and simply enjoy walking around their house in a fucking dog suit. This is total horseshit. All furfags are drawn to sexual perversity, regardless of their preferred species. Furfags only say this kind of thing when threatened with death or when they are trying to "surprise yiff" someone new.
Normal people tend to keep their fetishes and developmental oddities to themselves. Furries, on the other hand, believe their fetish is a lifestyle and that they must announce it to everybody on the Internet through their icon or sig. Society might actually hate furfags less if they didn't wish to justify their perversions so strongly that they bring their fursuits and molested dogs into every normal place they can find, and proceed to spew their crap. Every pervert must first accept that they are fucked up and either roll with it or an hero. Furries refuse to do so, thus making them easy targets for trolls and lulz.
The majority of the Internet hates them because they won't stay in FChan and Fur Affinity, and continue to annoy everyone with their persecution complex and disgusting fetishes. They are pushy, obnoxious, gullible, insecure, and completely incapable of understanding how stupid the concept of their fandom is. As such, they'll take offense to the claims of it being a sexual fetish, as if without the sexual aspect, being obsessed with cartoon animals would be perfectly fine. 'Cause it's totally normal to be romantically involved with Bugs Bunny or your pet dog
More often than not, furries will swear up and down that their precious fandom isn't all about the sex. This is utterly defeated the moment you wander into any furry artist's gallery be it on FA or what have you. It will be plagued with absolutely nothing but smut drawings and smut commissions. It is also noted that furries will often try to tame their porn, by replacing it with extreme suggestions through other pictures or even how they articulate their words. They go to cons in the hopes of even getting in a hotel bed with their other in their fur suits, since they can't acquire sex by normal means. No matter how hard they try covering it up with charities or well-intention gestures towards some positive result. What boils down to the bottom line is that this "fandom" is simply a giant fetish sex party in denial.
Even going as far as denial, it's even funnier when they try so hard to justify why it is they're into this disease. They'll find any scapegoat they can but it all ends in the same way - they fantasize particular furry characters into many sex scenes and dragged through their sick fetishes. You can find furries hidden in other fandoms from Anime - Gaming because that's where and how they recruit more members into their orgy clan
Anime.... in addition, how much we can blame Disney for this?

Each tribe starts with a headquarters and six outposts. You are able to help them claim the other tribes outposts, strengthening the tribe and weakening the rival tribe. If enough outposts are claimed, then those tribes will wage war - a battle you’ll be able to participate in. The outcome of the battle will leave the strongest standing, and the leader’s karma and your choices will have an impact on the fate of the losing tribe and their leader - which will also play a part in your ending.

It is up to the player to choose how to interact with each tribe. Eventually, you have the choice to help one tribe defeat, subdue or unite the others. That choice, the karma of the last leader standing and your karma, will also affect your ending. So its really up to you as a player how to approach the end-goal.

If it's implemented well, this sounds like it could be something that breaks the wave of static-world RPGs. Hopefully this will have gameplay consequences (e.g.. some items are only available for certain tribes)

In Biomutant, You Can't Mutate So Much You're No Longer a Furry Mammal

By Laura Kate Dale on 08 Feb 2018 at 12:04PM

As part of the ramp up to the PC Gamer Weekender coming up February 17th and 18th, this week we spoke to Stefan Ljungqvist, Founder & Head of Studio Experiment 101 about their upcoming game Biomutant, which will be playable for the first time in the UK at the show.

Since Biomutant was first announced, we've known that a core part of the gameplay is altering your playable character's DNA via mutations from other creatures. While we've seen some change the appearance of the character, and we've seen some change the character's abilities, we wanted to know what the balance between those was, and if any mutations purely did one or the other.

All mutations have an impact on how you play. They will grant you new skills. If you grow wings, you can glide. If you grow Crab Claws you can pinch and throw people, or slam into the ground. While most of them do have a visual impact on your character, the ones we call “PSI-Mutations” are mind-based only. Think of them like Jedi-Powers – you can fire sparks from your paws or throw objects or enemies around with the power of your will.

On the topic of the mutation system, Ljungqvist wanted to emphasise that it was more important to differentiate mutations from each other than to wedge in pure numbers of mutations, and have us a decent sense of the number of upgrades to be found in the game.

The Mutation System is very important for the game and quite big. We’ve Biomutations, PSI-Mutations and we would also like to highlight the Bionic Enhancements (Cyborg Stuff!) as part of this. The minimum number is five of each type, each with five upgrade levels. We want to make sure that they all have a meaning in the game, so you really want to have them and that they aid a certain playstyle. In addition, you can "re-code" your molecular structure at the bio-pools, altering your DNA and basic attributes. That said, we want to make sure they all vary compared to each other. We won’t implement, let’s say, six different ways to jump higher. Additionally, there's a wide range of Wushu combat abilities to unlock or learn and upgrade. Both unarmed, melee and shooting and, on top of this, you are able to train for the different Tribe Sifus and learn their specific combat styles.

Lastly, we were curious quite how much you could make your character vary from their starting form as a small gun-and-sword-wielding furry raccoon creature. Apparently, you should temper your expectations if you were hoping to end the game a drastically different type of animal.

You have the ability to affect both the look and the attributes of your character drastically, including gender. What we've shown so far is a smaller range of what's really possible in terms of re-coding the genetic structure of your hero – a.k.a. the anatomy, look and attribute stats to match that. Of course, you are a furry mammal type of creature at the core, but you have a lot more options than what you’ve seen so far. And you are able to mutate this at bio-pools over the course of the game.

Biomutant will be playable for the first time in the UK at the PC Gamer Weekender February 17th and 18th. On top of that, buy a ticket to PC Gamer Weekender and you will receive a free 'Four Pack' copy of competitive projectile fighting game Lethal League worth £29.99 after the show ends, allowing you to not only play the game, but gift copies to three of your friends as well!

You can find more information about the PC Gamer Weekender, as well as buy tickets here. Additionally, Kotaku UK readers can get a whopping 20% discount on tickets by clicking "enter promotional code" and entering the code KOTAKU20 before selecting their tickets.

But back on topic, I think Biomutant seems like a cute little game. I've had enough of grimdark serious for now, or edgy but unfunny like D:OS2.
