Kyl Von Kull
The Night Tripper
Alas, the grandpas and the children may be the only ones who can answer this objectively. It’s just too hard to look at this stuff honestly if you came of age during the renaissance. I’d like to believe that the original Fallouts and PS:T are objectively the best RPGs ever made—I do believe it—but when you’re exposed to this stuff at 12-14 it leaves a lifelong impression. I wouldn’t have it any other way, it’s just that for the purposes of this poll that feels like grounds for recusal.
I want to say we peaked in September of 1997, then plateaued at roughly the same elevated level through 2000 or 2001 (the latter two years more by volume than by particularly standout titles), before going into a gradual period of decline that then accelerated rapidly after Troika shut down (in ‘05?). The problem is that in my timeline games seem to start getting worse right after I lost my virginity, which is either extremely fortuitous or it’s not a coincidence.
How many people on the codex think the best games came out AFTER they discovered romance, or just started getting jiggy with girls/boys/livestock? I tip my hat to anyone who answers yes.
