Psst! Hey kids! Want to own a cool piece of gaming history?

1996 id Anthology / John Romero's copy / Complete RARE with DOOM QUAKE KEEN

Yes, John Romero is auctioning off his personal copy of the id Anthology, a compilation pack that consists (and I quote the auction description):

Everything is included in it: The Book of id, T-shirt, Dog tags, DOOM Comic book, Poster, Cyberdemon figurine, and id calling card.

I helped to put this anthology together with a design firm, Marc Laidlaw, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack. This was my last project connected to id Software after I left.

This collection encompasses all the games I helped create at id Software from our founding until I left after finishing Quake. So it includes all our vintage games like Hovertank One, Rescue Rover, Dangerous Dave, and all 7 of the Keen games, among others.

The Book of id was written by Marc Laidlaw, the eventual writer of Valve's games such as Half-Life 1 & 2, Portal, etc. It's an excellent story about the beginning of our company that helps augment Masters of DOOM. There's a lot of great photos in the Book of id as well.

The id Anthology is a major collector's item on its own, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Current bid is in the hundreds of dollars, but expect it to reach 4-digit numbers as the timer ticks down.

I really hope this bullshit ends up classified as gambling by some major goverment like the UK is trying to do, that way any game with loot boxes will have to be stamped with an 18+ rating and publishers will be forced to extricate this cancer from their games if they want to (legally) market them to teenagers. Making money of minors by getting them addicted to pay to win schemes, this has gone beyond the usual publisher greed, these suits are seriously fucked up man.

Nerd Nostalgia: So, in 1997(?) several of us were staying up late working on Thief, and we were excited because Daylight Savings Time was going to give us an extra hour to work (!!!!). When it came time to "fall back," our computers saw all of our changes were timestamped "in the past" and didn't need to be recompiled. We spent like 55 minutes fixing the problem, netting ourselves about 5 minutes of bonus work time.

That reminds me...Fucking Computers...man.

I installed some piece of shovelware game on a computer once. Unbeknownst to me, it installed itself directly into the Program Files folder...

fast-forward a few days later...I can't stand the game and hit the Uninstaller.

It proceeded to start deleting ALL FILES AND FOLDERS in Program Files!

Luckily I was watching and was able to hit the Cancel button before it did too much damage.

I was able to recover everything deleted using System Restore.

Note that it's not yet as bad as the headline makes it sound.

* Includes ingame items, DLCs/season pass, subscription & advertising

http://archive.is/FKbUJ
Notably, one of its top highlights for the quarter was a 66 percent year-over-year increase in net revenue from "recurrent consumer spending" -- that is, purchases of DLC, in-game currency, and other microtransactions.

So basically this means that they're making more money selling "DLCs/Season Passes", Subscriptions and money by Advertising than they do selling their games on Digital Distribution platforms. Which somewhat makes sense, since they're sometimes even basically giving away their base games like Assassin's Creed III: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/assassins-creed-3-is-free-on-pc-heres-how-to-get-i/1100-6446058/ or till Nov. 13 Watch_Dogs: https://freetrial.ubisoft.com/promotions/watch-dogs-1/8/ and others: http://bgr.com/2016/12/17/ubisoft-free-pc-games-download/
From December 15th to December 18th, Ubisoft is giving gamers the opportunity to download a free bundle of PC games that includes Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Splinter Cell, Rayman Origins, The Crew, Beyond Good & Evil, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Assassin’s Creed III.

Or have "Free Weekends" for other games like The Division or For Honor and are making money by nickel & diming via "DLC". They also have a bunch of Online games to go with that.

However there is reason to be concerned for the next Grand Theft Auto/Red Dead Redemption/Civilization/XCOM etc. since this was also an article: http://archive.is/JAgcA
Take-Two plans to only release games with 'recurrent consumer spending' hooks
November 7, 2017 | By Alex Wawro

"It may not always be an online model, it probably won't always be a virtual currency model, but there will be some ability to engage in an ongoing basis with our titles after release across the board. That's a sea change in our business."

- Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick, speaking to investors on a conference call today.

Eh, another 90's inspired indie shooter, announced with a cheesy, non-gameplay trailer:

"I'm all about BLOOD, NUKES, EarthQUAKEs... and B. F. G."

Hellbound is the latest PC title by Saibot Studios, the team behind popular horror series Doorways. Inspired by DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and many other shooters of the past, the game experience is focused on shooting, explosions, blood and speed. You have never played something so GROTESQUE!

Players take control of Hellgore, a big-ass motherf*cker who kills demons in Hell. That’s it. Is there a story behind all this? Well… yes, there’s a story, but it's not that important! The real protagonists are the fast-paced action and the gory violence.

Hellbound will be available very soon in PC, first as a Survival Mode that will equip players with the heaviest fire guns of Hell to pit them against hordes of fearsome demons and other monstrous enemies. Closed beta registration is now open on the official Website.

Seems not related to the Doom wad of the same name.
