I personally haven't played in a month, every time I feel like it I just remember what a shitshow matchmaking is and instantly decide against it. I've stopped playing with RL friends too.

But this is a good chance to go back into it, if only to try the new seasonal ranked matchmaking. Hopefully it'll be better and have less account buyers and overall griefers.

up on live now. The caster hero seems OP, the melee hero is fun to use (he has a vector skill like Gauntlet in HoN), it's pretty hard to control the ultimate. I was bouncing all over the place.

Played for a bit, Turbo is too Turbo (15 mins average game). Overall, idk, it's just feels pointless and boring at this point. Nothing to do with the patch, just the game in general. Played dotes since local equivalent of high school, it was bound to get boring eventually, so yeah.

ABILITY DRAFT UPDATE
Ability Draft has been updated with a completely new draft interface. Plus, players can now swap the hotkey order of abilities and chat with their teammates during the draft. We've also added support for fifteen previously-unusable heroes, and fixed abnormal behavior with multiple others. Think you can build a godlike set of killer abilities? Queue up and find out.

I feel that APEM/turbo mode is intended for new players/learning the game, if you have significant experience with Dota there's just no point to it. At least for me, once I learned how to play, I could never do APEM again.

And yeah, I agree about the boredom, etc. I think it gets especially bad once you spend some time away from the game - it's just so much work getting back to it, and having to deal with teammates is just so draining. Even muting everyone and considering them bots is too much work.

Eh I played dota since practically elementary school, in I think 6.02, like 16 years ago and I still find the game incredibly fun. People grow up in different way I guess.

And I find playing and get learning after some times away to be fun. Trying to see what works, what doesn't, analyze heroes matchups on current patch. I always had a freeze period in which I am a bit sick of the game, like 1 - 2 months a year and always enjoyed it when I returned.

I never really care about raging teammates tho, and maybe because SEA region is inherently try-hard there are less game ruining behavior. The point to get enjoyment out of it is, well, don't think about "I HAVE TO WIN" or "I NEED THAT SWEET2 +25 MMR", just play and enjoy the flow.

The fuck, the patch is so enormous Purge made a TEN HOUR video about reading the patch notes.

GENERAL CHANGES

  • DRAFTING
    • All Pick drafting order is now: A-BB-AA-BB-AA-B
    • Each day 10 heroes are selected automatically as bonus heroes for the day. Bonus heroes provide you with a free mango on selection (cannot be sold).
    • Randoming no longer gives bonus gold. It instead selects a hero from the set of bonus heroes and grants an extra iron branch (in addition to the mango).
    • Removed repicking

    LANING
    • Middle lane no longer has an additional melee creep.
    • Creeps now meet closer to each team's respective safelanes.
    • Denies XP granted to the enemy (the player being denied) reduced from 70% to 25%
    • Denied XP gained by the denier reduced from 30% to 25%
    • Neutrals killing lane creeps is now considered the same as the enemy creeps killing them—it's not a deny, and gives full XP. You must deny the creep yourself to deny its XP.
    • Total Wave XP (the 4 creeps) increased from 210 to 240
      • Melee Creeps XP increased from 40 to 57
      • Range Creeps XP reduced from 90 to 69 (result of both changes is 240)
    • Melee creep bounty increased by 4
    • Range creep bounty increased by 12 (overall total gold per wave increased by 24)
    • First neutral creep spawn changed from 30 seconds to 1 minute
    • Base hero-kill XP bounty (non-assist portion) for level 1-5 reduced from 100/120/140/160/180 to 30/60/90/120/150 (You still get extra XP for hero kills from the assist formula)
    • XP range increased from 1300 to 1500
    • XP required to go from level 1 to level 2 reduced from 240 to 200
    • XP required to go from level 2 to level 3 increased from 360 to 400
    • Tier 1 tower HP increased from 1400 to 1600

    TOWN PORTAL SCROLLS
    • Heroes now start with a TP Scroll. TP scrolls start on cooldown at the beginning of the game.

    SHRINES AND GLYPH
    • Removed Shrines from the base (replaced by filler buildings)
    • Glyph now causes your creeps to be invulnerable for the glyph duration.

    CREEPS
    • Extra siege creep now spawns at 30 minutes instead of 40 minutes.
    • Siege creep HP increased by 50
    • Fixed extra lane creeps spawning a minute too late (the ones at 15/30/40/45 minutes for melee/melee/range/melee).
    • Lane Creeps upgrade amount is now capped at Mega Creeps (previously, if a game went on for over ~4 hours, it was possible for creeps to be stronger than mega).

    ARMOR MECHANICS
    • Armor formula adjusted from 0.06*Armor/(1+0.06*Armor) to 0.05*Armor/(1+0.05*Armor)
    • Armor per agility rescaled from 1/7 to 1/6
    • Tier 1 towers armor increased from 14 to 17
    • Tier 2 & 3 towers armor increased from 16 to 19
    • Tier 4 towers armor increased from 24 to 29
    • Roshan base armor increased from 15 to 18
    • Filler building armor increased from 12 to 14
    • Shrines building armor increased from 20 to 24
    • Ancient building armor increased from 15 to 18
    • Melee barracks building armor increased from 15 to 18
    • Range barracks building armor increased from 10 to 12 (these changes maintain parity with the overall damage reduction of structures before the above formula change)

    BASE STRUCTURES
    • Removed Tier 4 tower HP regen (previously had 3)
    • Ancient HP regen increased from 3 to 8

    MAP CHANGES
    • Reworked midlane for Dire (both sides can now walk along the ledges without being hit)
    • Adjusted midlane ramps to be narrower
    • Moved mid Shrines closer to the primary jungle area
    • Swapped offlane Shrines and Bounty Runes
    • Adjusted offlane terrain to be wider
    • Moved primary jungle Bounty Runes closer to safelane camp area (close to the river ramps)
    • Reworked Dire safelane jungle area
    • Safelane hard camp adjusted (primarily pullable to the offlane, or to connect to the small camp)
    • Removed one of the ramps going down the jungle camp near each of the safelanes
    • Removed the following ward spots: Radiant Ancient/Roshan, Bottom Radiant Rune, Dire Primary jungle (near Ancient camp)
    • Made multiple miscellaneous tree and line-of-sight adjustments
    • Shifted bottom river Powerup Rune up the river slightly
    • Adjusted ramp to Dire safelane jungle area to be narrower
    • Swapped medium and hard camps in the primary jungle (hard camp is now the one closest to the mid tier 2)
    • Adjusted tree positions in front of the Radiant small camp pull
    • Made minor adjustments to low-ground tree positions in front of the Radiant ramp leading to the Dire offlane (near the blue crystals — pathing around these trees is now possible)
    • Reduced size of the ramp going to the Radiant safelane jungle from the Dire offlane side
    • Adjusted position of Radiant safelane hard camp up slightly
    • Slightly decreased size of ramp going below the Radiant Secret Shop
    • Shifted the ramp on the Dire offlane (that connects to the Radiant safelane hard camp) slightly to the right
    • Radiant hard camp (near the mid tier 2) is no longer in a pit
    • Minor adjustments to tree layout, ramps and terrain above and around the Dire primary jungle
    • Adjusted ramp going down from Radiant Ancient camp towards the top river

    ROSHAN
    • Third Roshan kill now drops a single-use consumable refresher orb. Cooldown is independent from Refresher Orb

    RESPAWN TIME
    • Hero Respawn timer for level 1-5 rescaled from 8/10/12/14/16 to 5/7/9/13/16

    NEUTRAL AGGRO
    • Neutrals now sleep at night. They have zero aggro range while sleeping.
    • Removed special neutral pull aggro exceptions for heroes (on Chaos Knight, Earth Spirit, Morphling, Pudge, Clockwerk, Rubick, and Tiny)
    • Neutrals lane creep aggro is now based on which neutral spawn area they're in (enabled for the traditional safelane/offlane pull camps)

    CAPTAINS MODE
    • Captains Mode now has an extra ban in the first phase (6 bans total in the mode).

    ILLUSIONS
    • Illusions now deal 80% less damage to Roshan rather than dying instantly when attacking him.
    • Illusions now benefit from Health and Mana regeneration.
    • Roshan Slam damage increased from 70 + 5/Min to 70 + 8/Min

    FOUNTAIN
    • Fountain damage increased from 190-199 to 220-240
    • Fountain mana regen increased from 4% MP + 14 mana per second to 6%
    • Fountain HP regen increased from 4% to 5%

    NET WORTH
    • Net worth Ranking Factor (how much the richest vs poorest heroes get from assist gold) changed from 0.75->1.25 to 0.7->1.3

    HEX
    • Hex can no longer be dispelled.

    UI
    • Added UI indication over inventory to show Mute state
    • Added a new option to require stop to interrupt your channeling abilities

    UNIQUE ATTACK MODIFIERS
    • Removed the remaining Unique Attack Modifiers
    • Lifesteal is no longer a Unique Attack Modifier (stacks additively)
    • Arcane Orb is no longer a Unique Attack Modifier
    • Mana Break is no longer a Unique Attack Modifier (does not stack with Diffusal Blade's Mana Break)

    OTHER CHANGES
    • Removed cliffing restrictions for Rubick, Magnus, Dark Seer, etc.
    • Removed Pudge and Vengeful Spirit's free pathing on terrain cliffs
    • Roshan now upgrades every minute rather than every 4 minutes (bonuses rescaled so its the same, just smoother).
    • Fixed magic damage sources from attacks not being blocked by Barrier type abilities (Pipe, Hood, Flame Guard)
    • Improved stack count readability on buff icons
    • Heroes with turn rates of 0.4 are improved to 0.5 (Mirana, Puck, Razor, Shadow Shaman, Tidehunter, Witch Doctor, Warlock, Beastmaster, Veno, Wraith King, Viper, Clinkz, Enchantress, Spectre, Spirit Breaker, Lone Druid, Elder Titan, Oracle, and Winter Wyvern)
    • You can now see enemy mana regeneration values (previously could only see HP regen values).
    • Regeneration Rune changed from 100/67 HP/MP to 6% Max HP/MP

And yeah, I agree about the boredom, etc. I think it gets especially bad once you spend some time away from the game - it's just so much work getting back to it, and having to deal with teammates is just so draining. Even muting everyone and considering them bots is too much work.

Spending some time away from it worked out in my favor actually, I think I finally understand dotes now. I almost never played the game alone, so I got into a habit of saving teammates no matter what, doing stupid rotations and not paying much attention to anything except having fun with THE BOIS. Started playing again and for whatever reason my playstyle became way more cerebral (major IRL stuff could be at fault here), hence the winrate: with my friends (40%) and solo (78% lul). Even though I had two solo games in a row with retards feeding on purpose (won one, lost the other, with a Georgian Jugg that sold his family's ram for a boost, but couldn't handle the fact that I left his lane as a pudge, to win the other two and started breaking his items), i'd still rate the solo experience as fairly positive.

Spammed pango in the placement matches (got ancient 2), I wish they added him sooner, p. fun hero. Underboss is my favorite in this meta tho (top 1.5% according to opendotes :shittydog:). With this patch ricing is almost always better than kills, but you don't really want the enemy to rice either, so game turns into a fightfest pretty quick and he kinda excells in all of those things. Neuters enemy core and messes with their farm, pushes fast, fights well, does surprisingly OK damage while being really lowkey about it, natural aura/mek/pipe builder so your team loves you as well, no real downsides and commends aplenty. Probably gonna end up playing offlane/roamer all the way up to 6k (played position 1 or 2 for as long as I can remember, mostly because no one else can play core properly in my stack), that is if I don't get bored again.

I recently took like a 1½ month break from the game.

It did take some time to get back into the new patch. Valve really could do a better job with the learning curve. But hey, I'm having fun.

It's a pretty good patch and a lot of heroes are strong beyond their previous obvious applications, thanks to the new talents (i.e. Viper is actually a really good lategame hero now in addition to being a lane dominator).

I've calibrated Ancient 1 but I still get way more shitty games than decent ones - and I don't count as shitty games only the ones I lose. If the ratio was more favourable I`d be inclined to play more, but as it is I think not even 1 in 10 games is decent - I define decent games as those where everyone seems to know what their hero does and players press their buttons.

Even though the Ancient bracket is still horseshit and all that really matters is divine 5+, the ratio of decent/horrible games shouldn't be as low as it is.

As it is, playing solo I can only have some amount of fun playing offlane without the interference of teammates. It's the most independent lane and if you get ganked, your team wins anyway. I also play a fair bit of Pitbro and can confirm pubs just don't know how to deal with him. He's great for keeping the enemy carry down and just generally a great fatass/base defender (since pubs also don't know how to finish games when they're supposed to).

Transitioning from a successful offlane into an impactful teamfight hero is often the most difficult thing. Do it too early, all your advantage is squandered because your garbage teammates will be too weak to fight, do it too late your shitty teammates will tilt even though you're the highest level hero on the map solo pushing an enemy t2 like a boss and forcing 4 man rotations while they all farm the jungle.

In fact, the single thing that pisses me off the most about Dota right now is how much of a bitch people are, and how no one actually pushes lanes. After the laning phase, strong carry players should always be farming on the opposite side of the map and aggressively pushing lanes. Instead of that, most of the time you see bitch tits farming the easy neutral camp on your side of the map while 3 lanes are bearing down on your towers. The strategic side of Dota is completely lost on most people - they can only see their hero, and what's immediately in front of them.

It's funny how Slacks of all people got the solo climb thing right. You gotta unite fellow retards under your banner, become a captain of CC Dumbfuck and all that. Doesn't have to do anything with voice or any sort of communication even, just get a hero with that presence, akin to Underbro and the like (besides, mute all in options + chat wheel and pinging cooldowns/calling missing heroes is more than enough). Hence why offlane works great for that type of thing, there's no pressure, but there are opportunities to make plays and if you do well, the rest will usually follow.

Just had a game (I was playing with my 3.5k friend) that kinda proves that point. I was pudge, he was spectre. In typical pub fashion we had AA/PA offlane against morph (opponent's 5k player), with PA going 0 9 1 at twelve minutes. Not to mention our mid storm going afk midway through the gank. Anyhow, I kept mid and safelane in check, was the only one warding and rotating, meanwhile spectre got her radiance fairly early (considering he went vanguard prior) and we snowballed from there. Thing is, if you don't tilt and just keep doing your thing, eventually as long as retards are playing and not feeding couriers/breaking items, a fair chance to win will eventually manifest itself (either through opponent's mistakes or through your team getting their shit together and getting key items/talents). When the game ended I had 7190 hp, lul.

Granted at Divine5 people make far less mistakes and coming back from behind is actually harder in this patch, but it's too far away to start bothering with high level tricks and methods just yet.

There's this really cool game where Slacks is sick and not on voice and he's playing with Purge. Purge is playing okay but not amazing. Slacks is playing meh as usual. Purge & his team start to lose badly. Slacks goes "Do you need me to go on voice for this?" -- and he does. FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER THEY WON and ONLY thanks to him. Sure, he didn't do the mechanical playing, but him barking orders and rousing the spirits of his team single-handedly carried that game.

And that's why Slacks deserves his 5K he had, even if he never buys a wand and might be generally terrible. Teamwork >>> everything else.

I've stopped caring at this point, but I guess Valve realized there was some untapped potential in statistics and they probably realize the purely cosmetic model is nearing the end of its course.

The stats stuff doesn't bother me that much, but the hero challenges/achievements/whatever is really bad for the game - this is something that could be seen in the compendiums as well, with those shitty quests. By introducing secondary objectives to the game, you incentivize people who are already bad to play worse (as in, not to win the match, but to complete whatever trivial task they were assigned). It's pure mongoloid fuel for those who can't find incentive in actually playing the game, but rather need checkmarks and external positive reinforcement to continue engaging in an activity that should be rewarding in and of itself.
