Yeah, but it's the same enemies you've already seen before or during the crisis, there's just more of them. Unless they've added something since I fought those. It's something but at this point I'm already done with the the game.

I'm sad, because they can expand game almost infinitely, but chose not to. You don't even need samurais with thousand times folded katanas. At least not from the start. Slavs, nomadic cultures, bysantines. It's just money lying there and waiting.

Let's go for another round of "Overhype why did you do that" ?
.....
OK!
What drives me crazy more than anything is that the game has basically no animations or voice overs. So the modders wouldn't be able to fuck the usual stuff up. Only add some art and numbers, play with behaviors and AI... That's it. It seems like the perfect game for modding actually. I really wonder just HOW MUCH of a mess the code is that they are so embarrassed to show it :p

That would be a really stupid reason not to allow modding: in order to avoid a hypothetical amount of personal embarassement, you draw upon yourself a considerable amount of fan backlash.

Just to throw in one more hypothesis: what if their next game was planned as to be little more than a rehash of Battle Brothers (almost the same code/structure with different graphics and setting), and any content churned out for free by fans would be detrimental to future sales of said new game (especially in case a good chunk of the free fan-made content turns out to be better than their second game's content)?

TBH, this is the least illogical explanation I can come up with.

I doubt that mods would be detrimental to sales of a future game. Their explanation that they didn't plan for modding seems to be the most logical one - it's their first project and they likely too shortcuts and there's not always clear separation between model and view or a purely data driven design.

If your game isn't moddable or you don't want to give away source code, you can always create simple tools for limited modding (adding items/enemies/new graphics/events and such stuff)
Shouldn't be that hard ;-)

Their next game (from what little we know) is going to be like the new XCOM, so I imagine mostly ranged fighting, directional cover, probably structures with doors, windows, ladders etc. Not really something you could do with modding in BB.

I still think the game is fine as it is, with it without modding, but having a single endgame boss for the highest level hostile settlements would make those fights a lot less tedious... like a undead empress, or orc warboss or bandit king. anything to make those fights more memorable than just waves of tanky generic enemies

Then maybe they see Battle Brothers as a fall-back milking cow to be resurrected (with very little additional work involved in order to churn new content) only in case their next game doesn't perform as they hope.

You think their fallback plan is releasing DLC for a niche, then possibly 5 year old indie game that sold 100K copies?

They should change their name to Overlyoptimistc Studios.

Well, it's not like they have shown any business acumen to write home about up to now.

The point is that adding content to a game like Battle Brothers requires minimal work, so as a last resort you work a couple of weeks on something, and hopefully you sell a few thousand copies more. What do you think the Lindwurm DLC is about?

It was indeed a baffling decision not to milk BB with some DLC or an Expansion. Fans would have been happier, Overhype richer.

The only explanation I have is, that after 5 years they were sick and tired of the game and just wanted to move on. Understandable, but overhasty and badly communicated.

This again...

Its again for you but as I written before every time some newbie come and see how game looks and play a little he suddenly get a idea that game lack end game content and would greatly benefit by even limited modding. Then decide to share this idea without knowledge of forum drama.
Must be conspiracy.
I bet the Jews, Germans, MERCHANTS are behind this.

So Dr Skeleton's mention of stars brings up that question. What do the little stars mean when I level up? I pretty much always click the star attributes since I guess I use them the most and maybe there's a bonus or something, Morrowind-style.

More stars = more "potential" in this skill, so the specific character will get better rolls in each level up. For example a bro with 3 stars in melee will get 3-5 points per level up there whereas a bro with none 1-4(I might be mistaken with the exact formula but you catch my drift)

Cool, so until I know what I'm doing I should pretty much click the stars for maximum radness.

OK, I kinda get it. I should maybe build strong, well-rounded bros, but emphasize high potential abilities, like a guy with stars in ranged skills should be a bowman, but I should build up other helpful stats for that role also.

Base roll per level for primary attributes(MDEF,MATT,RDEF) is 1-3.
1 star is practically +1 to minimal roll so 2-3
2 stars is +2 to minmal roll so 3
3 stars is possibility to roll higher than base max roll so 3-4.
FAT,RATT,HP,RES roll for 1-4 base and INIT for 1-5 base.

You should level up characters based on their base stast/traits/possible potential and Role you plan to use him on battlefields.
For example melee charcters do not need ranged
Heavy armored can lack Initiative as armor would slow them anyway.
In short.
Ranged - RATT, RDEF, INIT, FAT
Shield Tanks - MDEF, FAT, HP
Melee Attackers - MATT, MDEF, FAT, HP
If you go with light armor you can grab Dodge perk and invest into Initiative.

Exactly! And you will find out that some professions usually give better potential in specific skills more than others. In a logical way - a hunter will have potential to be a good archer for example

You want for guy start with high wanted stats and have stars in wanted attributes.
No point of making archer a guy who have 35 RATT even if he has 3 stars.
Difference in stars is 0,5point per star per level on average.

So basically it's in the same situation as Derpest Dungeon modding. Derpest Dungeon having been thoroughly humiliated by modders who did infinitely better even under those heavy restrictions and part of the same indie clique so you know the cucks shared a couch and a Ben and Jerry's over it.

That's the reason they locked modders out. And honestly some could get in anyways if they cared enough, but they know better at this point.

@Jimmious

* @Elhoim you brofist my sadness for the potential of BB but I say the exact same for Dead State :P That game could have been perfect with only a few changes.

Sadly I do not own it. I even made a few "defend the base" events with fights against different enemies outside the fence, and I would have compressed the timeline a little, but it was not my call to make and they didn't make it in after development was "done".

AoD is a different story ;)
