The impression I got is that they will be more or less like full companions minus the vision quest and, ahem, relationships. I.e., banter, barks, some dialogue, but no go-there-do-that, and they won't get with you or the rest of the party.

I don't think she ever looked anime, but I am keeping myself clean of anime in general.

I made my personal library of a couple of hundred of tasteful-only PoE portraits for both genders. I sorted through a few portrait packs, which caused me irrecoverable mental damage, thrawled through deviant art and pornterest when I had already become numbed to cringe, and then cut out a few suitable portrait images from pictures made by the old fantasy artists.

I think in the process I developed an eye for good portraits. I guess many of them will be useful for PoE 2 as well, although I have a few PoE2-specific which I've separated. I may release it all as a mod later, it will be just a matter of cropping and renaming the images. I guess at least some people will start drawing their own original portraits to replace the watercolored ones.

Someone asked Josh about it during the final stream for the figstarter. I'm not going to look through it because it's 8 hours long, but it somewhere in there.

I think they're Asian-looking humans, which were lacking in first PoE but make more sense in Deadfire, since it's set in a Polynesia-inspired region of Eora.

If the portraits tweeted by Josh are of those four sidekicks, Rekke the Storm Folk is the human with long red hair.

I'm not keen. The artwork is of a high enough quality, that I agree with, but why do the female sidekicks look stern and unapproachable? The final portrait is even sneering whilst holding eye contact directly with the camera. They could at least hide their contempt whilst they remain with the party. Every girl is some kind of murderous bad ass but we've got this one dude making bedroom eyes so go knock yourselves out.

I'm not convinced by a portrait where the artist paints uncertainty into the picture, either. Artists historically taking liberties, here and there, with their portraits to flatter the patron that, we assume, commissioned the work.

I want you to make me a portrait but give me this soft expression of uncertainty. I'll hold my hand to my chin, like thus, to give the impression that I'm deep in thought; like I've just come to the conclusion that I've addled my brain with a life-long dedication to ganja.

Dmitri Berman is the game's lead character artist, but that means 3D character models not portraits. 2D art is done by other people.

Ah, I mixed him up, I thought they repeated how he was fascinated with making death godlike portraits, and he was the one modelling them, not drawing the portraits.

Maybe that explains the sternness then :D

Maybe we/I are/am reading too much into it, but it makes sense that a woman asked to draw portraits of heroes would draw the women with the expression she wishes to show to the world, and the men with the expression she wishes men would look at her with?

I mean, if men tend to draw oversexualized women in fantasy, it probably works both ways.

Hopefully they are redo'ing -or- those portraits of the Big 3 (Eder, Pallegina, Aloth) were temporary. Sidekick portrait game is strong.

Goddamn I miss the times before the whole GamerGate thing. Sure there were plenty of retarded discussions on here then as well but... at least then the Codex was starved enough for RPGs that the focus wasn't on whether this or that developer had pink hair or not or the horrible fact that women look stern in their portraits.

They want to make more companions but aren't comfortable calling them "companions" if they don't have the same amount of content as other companions.

It could also be a way to throw in some more screwball-type characters to play with that don't necessarily fit with the Standard Obsidian Companion Design Principles(tm), although I don't know if these sidekicks will be like that.
