So im looking for a good game to give a friend for her birthday. She likes jrpgs with a good story, she loves most atlus games (inb4 "pick one of the two"). She has played games like some of the disgagea series to death and im in need of recommendations.

Blobbers, jrpgs, tactics and assorted faggotry. No western crap please, i just ate and i dont think i could stomach it.

I love her very much and i want to give her something truly special. So give it your best shot.

Trails in the Sky seems like an easy answer. Great story, good combat, great localization (above par than Atlus), available on most weeb-related platforms.

If she doesn't have a PC Trails of Cold Steel for PS4 works too.

The current Humble Weeaboo bundle :D

Trails is a good idea, but maybe you want to give her something more tangible / boxed - not a (Western PC) digital only release.

Also on PS3. Though it'd be weird to get a gift for last gen platforms.

Not friendzoned, just that she lives too far for me to give her something nice in person. Ergo looking for a game.
She does not watch tv or shows, or reads books. And she does enjoy good games.

She will never love you back son. No matter what you do for her.

Also, give her Rance, maybe she will discover a few new fetishes this way.

I got 3 suggestions

1) Depending on how much you are willing to fork over and if that person like to play on the go : Id go with a PSP or a Vita , post hacked with a custom firmware and a cart for some roms dumping ( chosen by yourself or the CodexTM ) and severals preselected AVI files ( Chosen by yourself or the CodexTM )

2) Thanks for Severian Silk for making that memories pop back in my mind , because its something ive done in the past with one of my friend . 10 coupons each valid for a 1h session in duo with you. For the :obviously: game, Sengoku Rance . Id advise having a few saved games prepared for each occasions. Result may vary. Do not cash in more than 2 coupons per 4h. Max 5 per day. Weird/akward moments garanteed .

3) Phantom Brave havent been mention if she liked disgagea ( or however its written ) maybe she ll find it good. Else , lots of good suggestion in the thread. The legend of heroes are also nice game if thats your thing.

But if you want somethign special for her , i guess that any good game could fit the bill . Just try to customize the box/ how she get the package / Did you put anything more in the boxe ( note chocolate or whatever fit your style ) . For whatever game you purchase for her , put a little something extra from yourself in there. ( to be interpreted lightly )

But have she played it?

Also what games she doesn't already own? If she by any chance a weeb that hasn't touched the Trails series you should introduce her.

One of the weeaboo dungeon crawlers on Steam is also a good choice. Disgaea games are heavy on grinding so she should be able to enjoy Wizardry-style games.

She doesnt own almost any newer game. She doesnt pirate either, regardless of how broke she is.

Was thinking of stranger of sword city, one of the suggestions for trails of cold steel, or trails of the sky. Which one is better and more recommended, and there are several trails of the sky, arent there? assuming she hasnt played any, which one would be best?

Also what good games does the bundle have?

Stranger of Sword City is a Wizardry-like with minimal story, and you seemed to imply that your friend enjoys story-heavy JRPGs, although you've been rather vague as to what exact games she's played and liked. It's a solid turn-based blobber, but with too much grinding, and certainly not something I would describe as "truly special".

Dragon's Dogma is the best Japanese RPG released recently (and has a substantial amount of story in the base game), but combat might be too action-focused for your friend.

Trails in the Sky is very story focused, so you have to start at the first one (First Chapter, or FC). Same goes for Trails of Cold Steel. As a fresh new take in the series, go for the first Trails in the Sky game.

I'd say Trails in the Sky is better overall as a JRPG, especially if you're going for story.

The bundle doesn't have any good games really, it's a joke. Sakura Dungeon is okay (as a porn blobber), but they're mostly mediocre-at-best lewd VNs.

Alright, went with trails of cold steel. Was going to buy in steam but for some retarded reason i cant get game keys anymore. So i went straight with gog. Getting a physical copy of any jrpg game in argentina is next to mission fucking impossible, so digital will have to do.

Rondo of Swords, she probably has a Nintendo DS
She does, and loved that game.

Pff, can she even define what is an RPG?

Jokes aside, ToCS looks like a good choice. If she has a DS I wonder if you could have gotten something her FF4 or CT for that console, as both ports are held in high esteem and FF4 is even pretty challenging, but that's maybe left for next year.

CONTENT OF MY REPLY IS BASED OFF ASSUMPTION SHE IS YOUNGER THAN 30 YEARS:

i didn't bother reading whole thread yet but if she "loves Atlus RPGs" then why not pick one from their large selection, as I doubt she's played every single good one. Hell, sticking only with MegaTen franchise why not give her:

- original PS1 version of Persona 1 (the PSP version is a massacre of censorship and they butchered the entire game in order to re-work it in the style of Persona 3 and 4)

- original PS1 version of Persona 2: Punishment... coupled w/ the PSP version of Persona 2: Sin (PSP version of P2: Punishment is also inferior to the PS1 original, though to a much lesser degree than the astounding censorship done to Persona 1 on PSP; the FAN-TRANSLATION of P2: Sin is also much superior to the PSP version but since we're talking gifts here that is why I recommended the PSP version)

- NDS version of SMT: Strange Journey

- 3DS version of SMT: Soul Hackers

- PS2 version of SMT: Nocturne

Outside of Atlus games I'm sure there are dozens of classic PS1 RPGs she's probably never played like Xenogears, or SNES classics like Earthbound.

In fact, forget everything I wrote above and just give her Earthbound for SNES. Anyone who hasn't played Earthbound doesn't deserve to call themselves a JRPG fan. It's literally the best JRPG ever made and will never, ever be surpassed.

EDIT: Also, obligatory mention of PS1 version of Wizardry scenarios 1-5; importing those discs and introducting her to Wizardry would also be top-notch.

Alternatively buying her Reproduction Cartridgues of the SNES fan-translations of Wiz scenarios 1-3 plus the Wiz 5 scenario cart would also make excellent gifts and they feature beautiful 2D sprite work that she would probably prefer over the polygonal remakes of the PS1 versions.

Either way... Earthbound > everything else.

Not sure if her gift is entirely finalized, but...
Radiant Historia, since she has a DS.

Grandia II
Valkyria Chronicles

These two are both available on Steam.
