After Dark's day and night cycle is actually part of the free updates as far as I know?

The scenarios of ND are for people who want some challenge in their game, but most people who stuck with the game until now don't want that. Economic scenarios are part of the free update though.

I started playing this again, but my city keeps having mass die-offs and I don't know why. Last time I had just gotten up past the 48000 milestone, when suddenly another one hit and killed more than 13000 people. Any idea what's going on?

Serves those anti-vaccination peeps right! :argh:

For a truly codexian answer: it might be mass immigration. By default, Cims live 2 years from when they first appear, so if you had a mass building frenzy two years ago and 10k+ new immigrants arrived, then this is just them dying on cue.

I needed a 4 way highway junction and a 4 way rail junction so I decided to save space by building the highway junction on top of the rail junction.

After two hours of autistic tweaking, I've finally completed my new intersection. I call it the 'rifle intersection' because it coincidentally looks like a rifle.

thank god for the move tool mod. getting the elevation levels and smooth curves just right was a pain.

i'll paint all the ground under this concrete colored later and maybe fill it with something useful like small stores. I can move the pillars anywhere I want.

Started a new city but ran into the mass die-off problem again, such that Cims are dying almost as fast as new ones are showing up. Is there any way to increase my population growth?

this is because of a overlook in vanillas design. when you build vast swathes of residential at one time, all the people who move in will be the same age and will die at the same time, since cims all have the same lifespan (3 years i think).

i highly recommend installing the Citizen Lifecycle Rebalance mod because it solves many of the demographic problems in the game. Immigrants come with a wider variety of age, cim adulthood is longer, teens and young adult immigrants start with some education, a small portion of cims die early.

The only other cause of mass die-off I've experienced is because some change on my part turned the water supply shitty. And there's lots of big warning icons popping up whenever that situation occurs. Or there should be.

Deathwaves have been an issue with the game since the beginning. Don't lay out whole neighborhoods with the game paused, as this will aggravate the problem. The first wave is usually the worst because your overall population is small and the amplitude of the wave will usually stay similar despite city growth. This is because most people tend to design similarly sized areas, and usually one area at a time.

If you play more slowly or zone more organically (two residential blocks, one commercial, one industrial/office, etc.), you will have only a very small amplitude sinus curve that is hardly noticeable. Personally, death waves have never been an issue for me, due to my playstyle, which means I don't have any need for the "Citizen Lifestyle Rebalance" mod.

If you see this behavior as a nuisance, you can also try and just dampen the effects with the No Deathcare and Automatic Bulldoze mods. These mods won't remove the problem, but they save you from the traffic and clicks that are the result of a deathwave.

So been having my eye on this game for a while, could anyone give a quick pros and cons?

Also, is this like... a game where you can lose because you do a shitty job at being a mayor or is it more of a "do whatever the fuck you want, you can always get out of trouble anyway" type of experience?

You can do whatever the fuck you want, because you can always turn on the in-built infinite money cheat and build your way out of trouble.

there is no loss condition but if you are bad at the game, eventually you will hit a wall around maybe 40k where you get no demand at all because your transport network is too inefficient and nothing can grow until you bulldoze half your city to replace your bad roads and highways.

I think I managed to build myself into a downward money spiral once. The game doesn't end then, you just can't do anything else than delete stuff and try to do something with the budget, which won't work if you are too far down the rabbit hole. But yes, there's always the "unlimited money" switch.

If you really want to lose the game, you can do that with the scenarios the game got in the last update. The disaster-related scenarios are only for DLC owners, but the economical ones are for everyone. You can set all sorts of win and/or lose conditions.

wasn't satisfied with the way my transit system was structured so i remade my city.

I have a lot of residential because I use the realistic population and consumption mod which bases the number of households a building can have on it's model size, so small buildings hold less and large buildings hold more. Each of my residential skyscrapers holds atleast a hundred cims, making traffic a nightmare.
20170609035055_1.jpg

traffic is... actually not as bad as it looks. the highways flow well despite being red. the biggest problem area is the road on the bottom left that is used by the 14000 cims who live in that area.

Metro and bus usage is quite good but not the best. passenger trains are pretty much a white elephant but i like them.

Military stuff and ancients ruins are way off, very artificial.
Had a vacation in Portoferraio (elba island, tuscany) a few years ago.

I guess it's the use of very famous landmarks that makes it look unrealistic. Better Italian buildings for the game would be nice, but while there are plenty available, most don't look that hot. There's quite a bit of Spanish stuff available though which is quite nice:

Incidentally, the Roman wall in Mr. Pink's pic up there still completely surrounds the Spanish city of Lugo nowadays, where also the cathedral and many of the houses in the pic I just posted come from.
