so the GOG version of gothic 1 and 2 are playable straight out of the box right? looking to pick them up along with ultima 4/5/6 and homm2

Yes. I actually already had the Gothic trilogy on steam, but they are a pain to run. I don't even think steams G1 will run at all on win7+. GOGs versions have run flawlessly for me.

GOG connect never has the games I want, just some indie shit

I'm always glad to see more titles being offered through GOG Connect, but you're right about many large publishers not participating in it. I was hoping to see Dragon's Dogma pop up on there since it just got a GOG release this week, but no dice.

Still, I've gotten a bunch of "free" GOG games in my account from the many Steam bundles I've bought over the years.

Should I purchase the Star Control series or just download The Ur-Quan Masters?

You'd have SC1 and 2. Ur Quan Masters is 2 + new content (iirc?).
It's up to you but I'd say those games are still worth having.

Star Control 3 is a different kind of game... often lumped with Master of Orion 3 and Ultima 9. I'd say you're better off without it.

Threads about pricing discrepancies have certainly gone *poof* before.

You get offered store credit for regional pricing differences, IIRC. Or was it something else you saw?
