He did but it does not work with Windows XP and he no longer programs for Linux so I can't even use my Linux mint dual boot crap.
You can run the Windows version on Linux. :shittydog:
I do not know about the newest versions but IIRC in 2.04 you could 'ctrl+i' to select a new icon.
You can change the character's name and icon, but you can't roll a complete new character. (or I haven't found a way yet.)

At what point can you kill wandering merchants?[..]
Checked for you the very simple "beginner level" Cold Dart spell: When i cast it with very high magic skill - in the 160s - with 3x Magic point usage, it immediately freezes a goblin solid, so it breaks into tiny ice splinters later.

I believe the freeze is a death effect. Guards are extremely tough to beat on my game.

Oh, in that case, since he's in this thread, I hope he reads this and compiles a WinXP version then - my laptop is still using that.

I'm afraid there won't ever be a Windows XP version. Helherron requires modern C++ features and Visual Studio 2017 and I am not sure if making a Windows XP compatible version is even possible.

Guards wiped my party easily on my games too. But once you can take at least one hit without dying - okayish armor required - use couple Scroll of Blizzard purchased from merchants and village, (Castle) shops.
** ==> Edit: In the beginning town's treasure room [cellar at center top] I tried 1 Scroll of Blizzard, Scroll of Cold Ball, Scroll of Apocalypse and the guards were injured somewhat, but not really bothered and wiped my party out without difficulty. More scrolls of blizzard are probably required. Unless spells were nerfed or guards buffed since the old Linux version..:?
Also regards casting just learned higher level spells early in the game: character level seems to play a major role in casting now, no matter how high the magic skill. Maybe the magic skill sets the bar, what you can learn, but level is a major factor how high a number you see at "can be cast at %-success".

Apparently you can target Windows XP even with Visual Studio 2017. No idea how well that works though.

Yeah, it should work - I compiled several Roguelikes that used to be runnable in WinXP, stopped supporting WinXP because of upgrading Visual Studio with the proper target platform and they started working again.

akuukka, does jewelry of concentration stack? If I use two rings and an amulet is it basically double damage for spells?

Yeah, it does stack. With two rings and amulet you have 3.5% percent chance to make 8 x damage, and only 26% chance to get the normal 1 x damage.

Hmm... maybe I should nerf the doubling probability to 20-25%.

Helmet (AC&DB+1) has the value of 0.

Throwing a weapon at oneself freezes the game (tested with knives, daggers, hatchets and spears, both single- and dual-wield).

Still having the Enter key issue on Race & Class choice screens during character creation and also in the inventory/shop view. On these one can use the spacebar instead so it's much less of an issue.

I can lock goblin shamans into repeatedly healing themselves by creating fire under them. They should prioritise leaving the burning tile if there's a safe one next to them (or is it fine because of goblins being stupid?).

The dwarven temple demon can be easily distracted by weak summons and then safely poked to death with ranged weapons. Could he be given a single movement point whenever he kills someone with full health in one hit (=cheap summons; can be explained lore-wise as some bloodlust rage bonus), preferably only triggered once per turn (so he can still be swarmed with more summons at the cost of faster mana drain on spellcasters and less party members attacking him directly)? Wouldn't make the summon spam tactic unviable, but it'd make the battle with summon use a bit more dynamic with the party eventually having to move away if not wanting to get caught in melee.

Thanks! Fixed the throwing bug and spell casters not avoiding fire and water (the code to avoid those was already there, it was just broken...).

Summon Minor Animals can indeed be used to distract big monsters. I think I will solve this by a rule that if one monster is considerably bigger and stronger than another, then the stronger one's movement points are not reduced to 1 when being close to the much weaker monster (makes totally sense, an elephant should not be disturbed by chickens). Since attacking always reduces 3 movement points, the default 4 moves per turn would allow Ba'Dong to kill two cheap summons per turn. This would be based on multiple variables like weight, level (yes, all NPCs have Level and experience) and toughness.

Yes, I like the idea. It needs some changes to the combat UI but I will definitely do it at some point.

In my game, attacking ends turn, like every other action. I tried to stack movement points to my bard in order to get some scroll/music action going but it always ends my turn after one action.

Should the dwarves near the capitol drop items if killed? I tried killing them but they didn't yield loot like wandering merchant guards.

I have encountered two strange situations:

In the Catacombs beneath the castle I encountered a 'shadow'. This monster appears in a graveyard, can pass through walls and causes panic on a hit like other incorporeal undead, but is not affected by silver weapons or harm/repel undead spells. Is not undead?

While clearing the frogmen I ran into a dog who started to follow me. Later, I found a farmer who said he lost his dog in the swamp - but he didn't acknowledge I had his dog and when I escorted him out of the swamp he left without taking it with him. So now I have this farmers dog following me everywhere.

Melee strikes cost 3 points. Try with a stunned enemy (they don't cause movement point reduction) or attack own party members.

Also IIRC equipping things costs 1 movement point (a bit silly that you can try multiple armours on in the time one needs to drink a potion).

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I expected some other request for help making the game run, I didn't expect development to have resumed. Thanks @akuukka!
What is the recommended starting party composition now?

+ 1 Fairy priest definitely.
+ Lizard bards still get highest music.
+ Orc shamans are cool from the beginning, since they can see far in the dark allowing you to summon your creatures right beside your enemies, but I chose a human shaman, because he has higher abilities = better summon - even if going in "blind" in the dark - but later will allow him to use magics more effectively.
+ Halfling Thief still gets highest dexterity
+ Fairy mages get highest searching skill, so I'm scouring dungeons with them, then switch to thief, when there is a chest or a door to be opened. Also serves as merchant.
+ With a pure Merchant you'll have amazing amounts of money = casting & battle skill development for your characters, attribute increasing elixirs, spellbooks, armor and weapons.

KICKING SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN COMBAT!

Currently thieves get all XP from opening locked doors & chests and as a result I don't use the amazing KICK at all. :((

MAKE MUSIC INSTRUMENTS EQUIPABLE PLEASE.

In combat its too slow to scroll down and precisely select a music instrument to use: If there is anything above it, so its not first, when changing to inventory, its a nuisance! Music instruments belong to the hand. Or create a music instrument slot and shortcut p for PLAY.

Just move all the items above music instrument to other char and back. Your instrument is first on the list and nothing will go above it.

Fresh from fighting very tough transdimensional monsters and received some eye-popping treasures (these elixers are amazing!). Shoutout to Doom with the Cacodemons? Why don't they spew fireballs? Also what's up with the endless corridor? If there's some way to get through it, I did not figure it out.

I decided to take my much more powerful Troll fighter to the Arena to make some extra cash. Is there a champion of the arena in the capitol city? I've killed a lot of gladiators and starting to feel like it's just endless re-spawning battles.

Does anyone know where I can sell crowns? I've got a backpack full of them and no one seems to want to buy them.

Use better armor - rings, helmets, gloves, boots - and Mace of Stunning and you can kill the champion, who is a thin guy, elf or human, if the game doesn't randomize champions.

FEATURE REQUEST: ARENA FIGHT MONEY PRIZES SHOULD INCREASE WITH OPPONENT DIFFICULTY

In the beginning town Odreworld there is a Gems & Art merchant at bottom right part of the city. Small house with a **flag**, fat guy in purple-blue-yellow clothes. The capitol has its gems merchant too!

*Endless corridor: was it filled with fire?

Neither of those merchants will buy them. I just double checked it, does it work for you?

The endless corridor is purple with candles on the sides going in a southerly direction. If you walk to the end of it you get transported back a few steps.

Okay, found the solution:
The game no longer crashes if you try to sell items to a wandering merchant. The merchants buy items of any type, albeit at a somewhat low price. These encounters can be a good chance to sell items like crowns which are difficult to sell to normal shopkeepers.

Didn't know this.. :?

In the old Linux version I don't recall having had problems with crowns, selling them probably changed in the new version.

I can only think of a higher search skill is required to find a way to the other end? I might have played multiple games using this exact corridor trick, maybe Avernum 2 - Crystal Souls. Uh.. Will check this Helherron dungeon later.
