A better way to sabotage the AI would be to prevent them from building buildings. Oh wait, the AI clearly already does that on its own. No need to wait for end game tech and dozens of years of pop growth to cripple them with a -10% production penalty.

stellaris is filled with all these awesome mechanics, the only problem is that they're available only in mid to late game, when you'd rather just bomb carpet the whole galaxy.
stellaris needs scenarios, an already established map with an already established balance of powers. who wouldn't want to start as navarra and end bombing france?

Divinity: Original Sin Divinity: Original Sin 2
Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. Today's dev diary is the second part on the 1.6 'Adams' update, with a couple more breakdowns of features we wanted to highlight for the update. Additionally, we're also going to post the full 1.6 patchnotes, along with an announcement of the release of 1.6 'Adams' on Tuesday, May 9th, the 1-year anniversary of Stellaris' release! Save games from 1.5 should be fine to be continued in 1.6, but we will as always provide the ability to roll back your game to 1.5 if you experience any issues with your save.

Devouring Swarm
A new addition in 1.6 for those with Utopia is the Devouring Swarm civic. This civic represents a Hive Mind that is hell-bent on consuming or absorbing all other life in the galaxy and has no use for diplomacy with those that are not part of the Hive. Devouring Swarms have the same diplomatic restrictions with other species applied that Fanatic Purifiers do, and will effectively be unable to conduct any diplomacy besides wars and insults. Like Fanatic Purifiers, they get no additional tradition cost from alien Pops and get a boost to society research for each Pop they devour. They also get significant boosts to Army Damage, Ship Hull Points, Society Research and have a small amount of constant hull regeneration on their ships.

We have also fixed regular Hive Minds so they can choose to displace rather than devour non-Hive Mind Pops.

Terraforming Enhancements
Another new addition to 1.6 is the 'Ecological Adaptation' technology that can be researched after Atmospheric Manipulation and allows for terraforming of inhabited worlds. Terraforming an inhabited planet will leave the sentient population alive, but give them slight happiness penalties while the process is underway. You can still only terraform planets that are either owned by you or uninhabited but within your borders.

Additionally, for those with Utopia we have also made some slight adjustments to the World Shaper perk. When it is taken, you will immediately unlock the Atmospheric Manipulation technology (if that technology is not already researched) and will be more likely to have other, more advanced terraforming technologies be available for research.

And now, without further ado, here are the full patchnotes of 1.6. Click the 'spoiler' button to show them. Enjoy!

I hope the next DLC is diplomacy based. Federations are way too meaningless at the moment.

I wish the game had espionage, especially for technology stealing and sowing dissent amongst your pops. Hell I wish there would a trade system - that would impact ethics drift in your empire. You buy stuff from a neighbour you get his good, his movies, his culture in the process and it can affect what people in your domain start to think.

Maybe in 2 or 3 years we will get something like that.

it's amazing in the most negative interpretation that civ3 had cultural shifts and stellaris hasn't. it'd make migration treats an actually powerful tool if used correctly.

Depends on how you prefer to play your games.
If you prefer easy going? Sure. I enjoyed it a lot, and definitely prefer easy going in my strategy games.
If you prefer to play in whatever way whatevername does... probably not.

If you want easy and simple 4X game in space then sure, go for it. If you are looking for another Paradox title, then don’t—it’s probably the least complex and the most streamlined of their games.

All of their games are simple and streamlined at their launch with EU3 being the most boring and bland game ever released. Only after two years or so of DLCs do Paradox games become complex and somewhat good.

Even CK2 was very streamlined at the start. It was a breakthrough game simply because it wasn't a bugfest Paradox was so famous for before it.

Playing the early game a few times before eventual disappointment is still probably worth $12.

Not-remove it from inventory first, if you're particularly keen on being disappointed. It's a generic, uninspired paid beta-test with barebones gameplay, useless diplomacy and retarded battle system, where only difference between races and every game you play is the portraits.

If you're itching for a similar spehss 4X, play Sword of the Stars 2 instead.

Are you in all seriousness recommending SOTS2 over Stellaris to someone?

The former is considered one of the greatest disappointments/disasters in 4X since MOO3. It took them a year to get it to functional.

With current state of Stellaris, it's not even a contest. Maybe in 3-5 years of paid DLCs it'll get somewhere, but atm - no.

And it became a great game. So what's your problem?

I don't have a problem - you can like whatever you like. Hopefully Kem0sabe does his research, though.

Stellaris is the early reveal in the upcoming Humble Monthly - pay 12 bucks now to receive it immediately.

Worth it?

Yes, it is worth it. You can get easily 40 hours out of it before you just realise how many things are shit or not good.
I would buy it now and then look at it in a year. This game will get a couple of expansions, maybe it will turn out good. I do not think you could get it cheaper even if there are Steam-sales in the future.

I wanted Space-EU4...what I got was a game that has meaningless diplomacy, combat that has no depth and shallow empire management. This game needs two more expansions before I consider it great good: Combat and diplomacy.
If HoI 4 and Stellaris is any indication, the next game from them will be smartphone only.
