"are about where Arcanum is combat wise"
ehh? Baldur's Gate, IWD, NWN, Diablo, Fate, Nox, Wizardry, Dungeon Siege...about the same? Rather a shitload more. C'mon do I even have to argue this...? Dude, no blinders here just the truth. I'm not trying to put the game on a pedistule or something because it has it's faults (though I too like the game very much ).

I should point out when I say combat extensive I'm not implying a lack of non combat options. While it's true unlike many of the games listed, Arcanum has many quests that you can avoid combat it still doens't take the fact that the game has a high fcous on combat. And, btw, there's nothing wrong with that. Even FO I would considered under this heading.

Arcanum has e.g. those "kill 1000 yetis and gorillas to advance to the next region" areas, which serve as an easy source of XP (I think I levelled there many times) but should be optional.

My dwarf specialising in throwing and explosives is also quite pleased with the turn-based combat, especially since he seems to be unaffected by the laws of time.

The more I played this game the more I grew to hate it. Besides the grossly obvious poor combat all the other bad design decisions, poor balancing and unfinished feeling just kept adding up.

Late to the party :P (first post 2004 - last post 2006)

"Unique is a word that gets thrown around a lot. But in this case, it is just not enough. Arcanum is one of the greatest games ever created. A marvel of design that gives you the freedom to do things that you never could in most other games, such as opening a window. But all that freedom does come with a price."

Oh BTW, let me hijack this Arcanum thread.

I tried running the Steam version of Arcanum on Windows 10 a few days back. And well, it does run like shit, even with the UAP and the high res patch.

You can fix it by downloading the Wine 3D DLLs and adding -no3d -doublebuffer to the command line. This removes all lag and graphical glitches.

So... I thought about making a small UAP update that would include the said DLLs and would also have -no3d and -doublebuffer enabled by default in the engine. I could add -3d and -singlebuffer commands to enable the original rendering in case somebody wants it. I can also bundle HQ Townmaps, restored animations from the beta version of the game and other patches in a single installer since bandwidth is not an issue nowadays. What would you guys say? I can also throw in some minor bug fixes for the good measure, I still have plenty on my to-do list.

P.S. The Ruskies are at it again, take a look at what they've done to my high resolution patch. The fuckers.

Would definitely be a nice addition to this.

Tim's recent talk where he showcased the reactivity in Arcanum made me want to get this old sin rectified and finally play this. If you could update the files to make the GOG version Win10 compatible out of the box, well that would be swell.
