Re weapons discussion:
2H axes split their damage between head and body always, thus the seemingly crazy damage numbers (if you look not at the item but the standard attack skill). They're actually not that great against heavy armor/orc warriors compared to warhammers. I haven't played in a while, but I'm not sure a 2h axe does more armor /piercing damage to, say, the body than a greatsword, or at least not much. Against fully armored opponents (good helmet and body armor) they're meh.
Well, unless you consider 35%/100% vs 40%/150% not "more armor/piercing" damage then yes, greataxes are not better than greatswords against heavily armored enemies.
Of curse base damage on axes is slightly lower but then they have the "always also hits head" ability built-in. Overall they are significanly better than greatsword against a single enemy in heavy armor. I don't know where did you get the impression that they aren't. Greatswords are still better overall because of much better attack options.

I considered the %, but wasn't sure how that actually works out because of the split damage. Consider that armor reduces hp dmg by 10%, so 2 pieces of armor hit = 10% each. Does that matter in this equation, or do the damage numbers make up for it?
You might well be right, but I'd love to see the actual numbers. Also not sure if they do critical damage to the head or not, that would change things big time. The dev explained it on the steam forums at some point I believe, when peopel were asking about the headhunter perk. Can't be bothered to search for it now, though.

Also: Battle forged perk, enemies may have it and if they do, how does that apply to 2h axe hits? Is it triggered twice for each swing that connects? How exactly is that calculated then in this instance, with full pre-hit armor, or sequentially, or...

All those are good questions. All i know is the numbers we can see and that my experience (i know it is anecdotal) matches the numbers. My Greataxe bro was killing Orc Warriors slightly faster than any of my Greatsword bros during Orc Invasion crisis. Of curse this is all basing on subjective observation, bias is possible.
The 2-h hammer bro was the worst but that was probably because he had the worst base stats and was still only in mid levels and had worst armor and the enemy liked to target him first (probably because of weaker defenses).

Yeah, the a.i. loves to go after your weakest guys. And due to the damage from 2h being focuse mostly in one swing per round barring berserk, missing often just flatlines your dps...

I used to run all greataxes on my frontline bros until I realized that was killing some of my armor loot and not really killing orc warriors as fast relative to 2h hammers as the numbers made me expect.
Before that I thought the designers had messed up their balancing by making 2h axes do ludicrous damage against everything including armor, but no such luck :D

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Today's update brings a minor balancing change and various bugfixes.

If you're using Avast, please note that it may be necessary for you to go through the steps outlined here again in order to play the game.

We'll have a proper juicy dev blog again next week where we'll detail our plans for the future of Battle Brothers. We'll talk about additional content, the possibility of DLC, and translations. All this and more next week!

Changelog
  • Changed payment to be slightly higher for high difficulty contracts in order to encourage taking on higher risks for higher rewards.

  • Fixed game potentially hanging as orcs use the 'Line Breaker' skill in very specific situations.
  • Fixed wrong starting position in combat when escorting a caravan while another caravan nearby gets attacked.
  • Fixed attached locations of settlements sometimes appearing incorrectly in tavern rumors during wartime.
  • Fixed various minor issues.

checking the patch notes, i also looked at the previous one

and i laff'd

Fixed AI not using the 'Footwork' skill properly in some cases.

This must not have been particularly successful, considering I've never seen a gob use footwork 'properly' so far. In my experience, ambushers never use it, instead they switch to knives immediately, while wolfriders/skirmishers just bounce back and forth until they run out of AP. Yesterday I saw a wolfrider footwork out of a dude's tackle zone, then jump right back in, footwork out AGAIN, and AGAIN jump back in.

I keep reading a worrying amount of mentions of difficulty scaling (level, equipment, size of your party, etc. etc.). Is it really that pervasive?

It's not like mordheim though, just because you add 1 guy to your party doesn't mean all enemy parties will now feature 1 more guy of the equivalent type, more points in equipment = enemy also gets same additional points (?) etc.
In battlebrothers you can totally get ahead of the game pretty easily without even knowing all the details of how the enemy works. In mordheim I always got the feeling it was down to isolating enemies or using goofy tactics (or playing skaven). YMMV
Thanks. That was my main worry.

No wonder this game is loved by josh sawyer. It can be considered a spiritual successor of Darklands even though it does not have real time with pause combat.

What are the roles ofother mercenary companies in the game? Does them compete with you for contracts and fame by also roaming the lands?
Because I was chased by an orc band and ran towards another mercenary band and they were also engaged in the battle. They were murdered and i just finished off the remaining orcs and received a shitload of crowns.

Huh, I have seen them use it plenty of times properly. Wolfriders getting out of combat to attack my archers and such. Ambushers escaping. Those who stand and fight I just considered those braver/dumber goblins then the rest :)

they are hired from cities/villages and if you angry some town they may be sent after you,if you dont mind the fame drop with the cities that employ them you can attack them and loot their juicy armors/weapons.

I actually like shield mastery. That and kite shield shits on archers even if you have zero investment in range defense.

Hired an hunter yesterday with 3 star ranged skill and 3 star ranged defense with 55 starting ranged skill FEELSGOODMAN.

Game randomly stopped working for me, it freezes when saving, what the fuck.

Do you have the free version of avast antivirus installed? That can cause it. If yes, check the post above that deals with the most recent update.

Hopefully not. I'll slap anticipation on him ASAP as well as doing night raids only against marksmens.

This game, just wow.

I haven't had this much fun in turn-based tactical game since, well, probably JA2. Kind of sad that Overhype cannot do JA3.

French magazine Canard PC gave Battle Brothers a sound 9/10. The review prases the game's systems, both in terms of mercenary company management and in terms of tactical combat itself. The article insists on how the proceduraly generated worlds are surprisingly belivable. Review ends with this (approximatively translated) mention : "If we need to go through all your computers to buy this game to you, we will not hesitate to do so". May be worth mentioning, as Canard PC may be the main and most respected video game newspaper in France (and don't hesitate to contact the newspaper http://www.canardpc.com/contacts)

one would think killing 3 orc warbosses would be enough to halt the invashun

well one would be wrong

I had to kill just one, only maybe ~170 greenskins in total too. BB RNG strikes again :bounce:.
