Torment Torment: Tides of Numenera Beta Thread [GAME RELEASED, GO TO NEW THREAD]

The thing that gets me most about the appallingly shitty companion portraits is this game looked like it had art direction going from it right from day 1. What happened? Did they fire all their artists and hire Fargo's kids?

They had at least one good concept artist. During the Kickstarter, the Last Castoff art looked sweet, like H.R. Giger meets the Pre-Raphaelites.

I also would like to know what the deal with that was.

Too skilled and different for console peasants, have to rein that creativity in. They might get confused along the way.

Yeah it's the weirdest fucking thing. Part of why I was excited about the initial Kickstarter was the excellent artwork they were showing. Whoever they had doing those concept arts could really do justice to the art of PS:T.

I don't know what artist they ended up with instead, but looking at the quality of the portraits, they were probably trying to add some Diversity(tm) to the company by hiring an amputee tranny artist that paints with his dick.

Most of the initial concept artists such as Andrée Wallin, Nils Hamm and Chang Yuan are probably too expensive for InXile. Dana Knutson is definitely not as expensive as Wallin, and he did a lot of Planescape art back then (he created the Lady of Pain), so it's a shame they didn't use him more.

That's it, I think. All the initial guys were brought in because of their work on Numenera. At some point inXile decided to move it all in house.

On the contrary, my first assumption was that the suddenly jarringly realistic style of the new portraits is the work of an external artist that they hired because they were unsatisfied with their in-house guys.

The art used to look like this. The decline....

Landscape concept art and portraits, two very different things.

But the thing is that the rest of the actual game doesn't look like those portraits either. They're uniquely weird.

The decline is painful. They turned something beautiful into Tumblr.
