Sui Generis is to be a fully-fledged RPG on the same engine. Exanima is both a stand-alone prequel to Sui Generis (20 years before it) and a technology proving ground.

You could of course say that SG is vapourware. BM is slow in delivering, but what they put out is really top notch. AFAIK, all the assets and systems made for Exanima are directly to be used in SG, so every update we get now brings us closer to having a proper RPG.

On a side note, I regret backing a lot of kickstarters. Not backing Sui Generis is the only one to make me really sad to have missed it.

Damn, the boxed version was expensive. 128 dollars. (From the kickstarter)

Siveon What tier did you get?

I really like it. Feels like a nice mysterious dungeon crawler. To me they don't even have to make their grand RPG that they want to do, just continue what they got going. One of the reason I like it is how minimalistic it is, no NPCs that dump lore on you. You wanna know something - search out old tombs and books. Actually in this regard it feels a bit like Dark Souls.

Some dialogue will be added to the game soon (TM). I'm pretty sure it will be kept in the minimalist style the rest of the game is in.

I also love the fact that there is no automap - making a GridCartographer maps of my playthrough was a very enjoyable experience in itself. Not to mention that Hidden Asbestos is a total bro and added curvy edges so I can make nice level 4 maps.

:negative:
I finally made it through level 1 after 5 hours but I entered level 2 with 90% of my hp bar as red and no more healing potions. From what I hear, there are no potions at all for the next two levels. I have no idea how to proceed since even getting bumped into is enough to die now.

My most infuriating death was in the prison area in level 1, when my sword somehow got stuck in between the bars of the prison cells leading to me getting hit over the head with a table leg until I died.:argh:

I believe you can set up a checkpoint system so that you restart at the level transition upon your inevitable death.

The problem is that I went through the checkpoint with no health.

Think you get full health on respawn, right? If not, you might as well redo.

With agility and skill.

Haven't played in a while, so I didn't get that far.

So - good luck!

Huh. I've been sleeping on this game, thinking it's just a quick combat tech demo or something, but this sounds very promising:

This game features a very deep, truly physics based combat system. This is not just some animation feature, it is a fundamental difference that is central to gameplay. Real momentum, forces and collisions are always at play here, every nuance of your inputs is crucial to the outcome. This will likely be unlike anything you've played before and may take some practice, but can be hugely rewarding and the skill cap is virtually infinite. It is not particularly fast paced or difficult but it does require you to pay attention, it is very tactical and just casually pressing buttons won't get you very far!

I am still looking forward to Sui Generis. A full RPG with this type of combat and overall style of having to learn + pay attention would be very nice, indeed. :)

Initially I didn't even try to fight the Golems, I just ran from them. Then I realized that the level is full of small rooms with chairs in them. So I lured them into such rooms, ran around the table in the room, and then darted outside and slammed the door shut behind me. The chair had already been placed next to the door, and is at this stage moved in front of the door to prevent me from accidently opening the room-turned-prison-cell again.

As for killing them. I played a fuckton of Arena in order to get somewhat decent at the combat system. Then I put on plate armor and a huge two-handed sword, and proceeded to bash at them around 10 times without dying in the process, that took them down. Don't try to fight more than one at a time, and remember that walking into areas that you don't have a specific token for awakens the Golems.

Also, you're going to die no matter what so keep backup weapons in your inventory - if you die from non-lethal damage you will drop your equipped weapon and wake up in another location. Wearing plate armor should make most of their blows deal non-lethal damage.

Exanima is already its own game, well worth the 15 USD or whatever the price is now. Not like Diablo really.

Anyone following this closely enough to know whether they changed their tune on licensing the engine?

Nothing changed there, afaik. There was talk of modding for Exanima, but i'm not sure how firm a plan that is.

Just a level editor would be really nice.

The big concern for me is that the physics engine limits the amount of enemy types they can realistically make. While skeletons and zombies are just reskins of people, other animals would need their own physics AI. It took years to just get humanoids right.

Give me a level editor and shitty bows that you cant hit anything with, and I don't know what more I could wish for. This game is real fine, I mostly just need more and deeper dungeons to be satisfied.

If I could change anything it would be to limit you to low tier equipment a bit longer at the start, real good feel in fighting ghouls over trash. Niqqa finna git got wearin dat fly worn gambeson wen a dawg b starvin, don matter none if it hafta b done wit a bedpan to ehs fukkin' skull, knawmeen.
