X-COM: Enemy Unknown (1994) :5/5:

It's X-COM: UFO Defense (or UFO: Enemy Unknown, in Europe). But at least you didn't call it XCOM.

Another frustrating aspect were the alien leaders and commanders - which you have to capture later on as part of the endgame. I never could figure out how to tell them apart from regular soldiers.

Use a mind probe.

I never got to experience an alien retaliation

Unlike other games, the aliens are actually playing the game here. They must find your base before they can attack it. If you shoot down all the scouts on retaliation missions, base invasions won't happen.

What the fuck you are not Serious_Business. End this travesty
No, I am not, what the fuck is wrong with you? What do I have to do? Change my avatar? Get the mods to make Goatse available and I'll gladly change it. Feliks Edmundovich or Otto Skorzeny will also work.

No, please keep going at it. You seem like a fine poster so far, you can take my place. However you will have to swear every 3 words, work actively to save introverted isolated little white fuckers from depression and their own authoritarian tendencies, plus being generally subversive towards right-wing "ideas". Also you will work hard to be the most edgy man on the planet, so much that you will be barely understandable half the time. Sometimes you will want to cry and have to hide it from everyone by being even more stupidly vague and aggressive

That is some sad fucking shit, get the fuck outta here

(Remember never to put dots at the end of your sentence to look even more nonchalant and noncommittal, this is key)

Finished Saints Row: The Third.

Did some optional DLC missions and challenges I didn't get to complete during previous play through. Got this in a SR bundle couple of years ago so it has all the DLC missions. Picked stupid strategy for doing some challenges very early because I didn't recall that doing City take over missions can take pretty far in them without going to grinding mode.

I still like this game. Graphics are okay even today, plot doesn't even try to take gansta stuff seriously is entertainingly retarded, yet some things are pretty well thought out, if player pays attention. I think that players who have played GTA since (1-2) 3 to 4 can appreciate it the most. It's difficult to explain so I just leave it here and comment the DLC.

Main DLC's are Professor Genki's Genki Bowl missions, Weird Science and Gansta's in Space mini campaigns. They sit very well in the game world and are fun. Genki missions were probably my favourite's, they sit perfectly well among City take over missions. Mini campaigns are fun, Weird Science being shorter but for some reason I liked it a bit more than Gansta's in space.

Whole game can be completed pretty fast if aim is just to complete the main plot. Doing challenges and other optional stuff this can be expanded to a lot longer game.

Tech wise I had random crashing issues though, until I run this in compatibility mode for Windows Vista SP2 and set CPU affiliation to only 2 cores. No single crash occurred after that. Controls on foot can be a bit unpredictable when making sharp and fast movements because character has some inertia. Didn't had that difficult times with combat though. Vehicle controls, cars, bikes, aeroplanes, helicopters, VTOL's... physics are good enough but arcadey compared to GTA IV. While controls are not in a way, they don't feel as rewarding as in GTA IV.

Sound is okay except for radio stations. I didn't try to pin it down what exactly is wrong with them, but I suspects tracks are very dynamic compressed, or there is some sort of DSP effect running. They don't stand out enough without turning up the volume.

I never got SR 2 to work in my system, but played SR3 and SR4 back to back last time I was on this. I like SR3 a bit more than SR4, which did some things better but turned out to be more grindy than SR3. I would recommend both if they are for sale in a bundle.

Next: Saints Row 4.

I started questioning my existence as a gamer.
Is it fun? Am I having fun? Had I ever having fun?
What gives me fun?
It feels like depression. The more I play the more hollow I fell.
Everything is just walking and gathering better weapons and armors. Quests are just excuse to give me experience. Ten seconds or ten hours later, it doesn't matter, I will be doing the same.

Is it beggining of the end? Have I crossed entire plateu of live and only thing that awaits me is abyss on the end?

Or is it just 3 hours of Fallout 3 that pushed me into madness?

AHAhahahahaha.. they told you so. Coulda told you myself, and I've never even played it. Obviously it's :decline:

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
I finally got around to playing (and finishing as of last night) Siege of Dragonspear.

I realise I'm late to this party, but here we go.

The story had so many blatantly railroaded sections it's hard to forgive them: ("Hey CHARNAME, you should surrender! Oh, you've agreed to surrender? Well fuck you, that doesn't fit with our plot!!") Why give me the option if it means nothing, Beamdog? The dialogue then used to justify this decision is just awful writing on top of awful writing and even more of a slap in the face.

Caelar's motivations are fucking stupid and she flip flops what feels like every thirty minutes: ("We should work together but we can't because reasons, you should help me but you can't because reasons, I don't regret a single thing about this shit crusade and would do it all again given the chance but I'll become a demon's blackguard without any protest whatsoever because reasons.") Wtf Beamdog? It seems like they spent more time writing inclooooosive!!(tm) characters than thinking about actually writing a good antagonist / story.

I don't think any character was a faithful recreation of their BG1 self: perhaps Jaheira but likely only because they ignored her. Viconia was bludgeoned over the head with "muh romance" and comes across as way too approachable. I don't fully remember BG2's Viconia but I'm not expecting Siege's Viconia to line up with BG2's at all. Her portrait in Siege looks nice, at least.

It should probably come as no surprise that a third party developer trying to make a midquel nearly 20 years later would miss the point so badly but I did honestly have a small amount of hope they wouldn't fuck it up completely. Thankfully a decent chunk of encounters are actually quite well designed and enjoyable to play - I guess it was just Beamdog's writers that were dogshit, huh? The encounters where a ton of recruits mob you were pretty shit, though. The new items are nice; I'm not sure how in line they are with generic D&D but I liked them a lot.

Ultimately I'm never going to play this thing ever again. :positive:

I just finished Open Xcom and it was a blast! One of the best games I've ever played! Will be one of those I replay regullary (with Falllout1-2, BG1-2, EU2-3, JA2, Open General). End was a bit tedious as I had 3 fully specialized mind controllers - I didn't even get down from the elevator area (well, one panicked little guy did and show me first 2 aliens, rest was a breeze), but I believe easy difficulty was the reason.

Base building, micro-management, frustration when your Top Gun turns to be metally weak, frustration when Etheral leader takes control of one of your cannon fodder guy and makes him to drop a granade on the ground IN the Transport Plane on the very begining of the misssion, frustration when you missclick when fireing rocket launcher, frustration when you tries to shot down battleship with your Fighter. Great game!

Now will try on medium difficulty with more iron-manish aproach. And Open - TftD will be next (read somewhere taht TftD works fine with Open Xcom, will see).

Started playing Dungeon Keeper Gold with KeeperFX (1920x1080 in-game resolution). Seems to work just fine, music plays too. Nothing more complicated then copying files and ticking a few boxes. Up to mission 5 or 6 I think. I think it's been a good 10 years at least since I last played it. I'm a terrible fan of turtling, so I can't wait for those nice long levels with lots of space to work with and some gem blocks to keep the money flowing. Nothing like building up a huge army in a monster base then crushing the enemy with overwhelming force.

I never tried Deeper Dungeons last time I played, so I might give that a go. KeeperFX seems to come with some custom campaigns too, though the original 2 might be enough DK for now.

Just uninstalled aragami.Indie dev's can't tackle stealth at all it seems.
-Checkpoint based system does not work for stealth games whatsoever, when will people learn that. Not to mention the game a horrible tendency to put checkpoints at the weirdest parts of levels(some happen after 5 minutes, some after long periods of no checkpoints)
Not to mention that checkpoint based system forces smaller arena like level design unlike quick save where you can get one giant level.
-Modern stealth tropes galore. You can easily unlock the skill that lets you tag enemies and see them trough walls.Take downs trivialize the game since you can teleport and press take down awesome button before enemy reacts and even after he reacts and one shot him.Oh and of course they added some form of rpg skill system so you can go item hunting.
-boss design is just one giant fuck you to the player
-Character movements feels slow and clunky.People seem to confuse that stealth game characters didn't have clunky but limited movements there is a big difference there.Moving without teleportation just feels wrong.
-teleportation as core stealth mechanic makes no sense.Stealth games are all about careful movement and positioning and yet here you have something that trivializes it.Also controlling where you will teleport is a pain in the ass considering you are doing it from the third person and the aiming is finicky.
-enemy and level design variety is nonexistent.Generic guy with sword/lantern and archer guy is all you get here.
-you can't jump or attack whatsoever.
-At least the game looks nice but that is all the positive things i can say for it.

Jokes aside, lately I've been having some existential thoughts like this because I forced myself into playing some games. Idiot as I am, I thought that I SHOULD play some classics that I let pass on its time, so I went for Chrono Trigger.

Man, I just can't. I think that when I was younger and couldn't understand english, I thought that was fun to see a game like this or Final Fantasy 8 where 80% of the time you're just seeing cutscenes and talking to NPCs, and, to make matters worse, when enter a battle is simply a "spam B/X/O/whatever to win".

So, I was bothered a lot and was playing Chrono out of obligation. Dropped about 5 hours in, started a new char in Demon's Souls and now everything is ok.

It doesn't matter if I spend the rest of my days playing Nioh/Souls and what have you. At least I'll play something gameplay based that brings me fun.

With that said, I'm playing Bleed 2 right now, didn't even knew the game was out and I loved the first one. The second is even better so far.

Might and Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven.

Nice to sink my teeth into a really fat and juicy CRPG again. Enroth is a joy to explore, and the advantage of bad memory is that I have forgotten most of the finer points of the game despite playing it twice before.
Best dungeon so far: Temple of Baa, with wall to wall Skeletons. My party somehow managed to squeeze through the wall of bone and make it to the exit, and returned with a vengeance and the Inferno spell.
Worst dungeon so far: Corlagon's Estate. Spent hours on finding the right button to click to progress.

Playing BT1 myself right now and was fearing I would eventually give up due to encounters every couple of steps.
My experience is completely different though, the rate of random encounters is bearable and I stumble upon more fixed encounters than random from going trough doors. Even then I am able to just run from the encounter and carry on my merry business 90% of the time.
Having finished BT1 about a month ago i decided to start BT2 this weekend. While the random encounters weren't an issue in the first game as described in the quote, BT2 is a completely different story. There are hardly any fixed encounters and the random encounter rate is ridiculously high. Despite my party being ~lvl 28 I fail more often than not at simply running away from the encounters in the starter dungeon! :x
With the new range mechanics you now have the option to advance on your enemies as well as try to run or simply fight before a combat round begins. Likewise spells and weapons have different effective ranges.

The difficulty spike between the BT1 and BT2 is real. I am currently at the 4th floor in the starter dungeon and from a mapping perspective, only Mangar's Tower from the first game is similarly difficult. Yes, the last dungeon of the first game is about as much of a pain to map as the first dungeon in the second game :mixedemotions:.
Likewise the encounters are also far harder, I am already meeting enemies which are capable of summoning Red Dragons without batting an eyelash. There are also new silence squares which will cause your bard to stop singing, at least I don't recall seeing those in the first game.

On top of that I have also just started on Wizardry V. Being able to import the party I have used in I through III it was a no-brainer to continue their quest for additional special symbols on their character sheet. When transferring your party from an earlier Wizardry game they start out at level 1 and with reduced stats.
My party is Fighter-Lord-Samurai-Thief-Bishop-Mage. My priest found an item which turned him into a lord in the second game, unfortunately this means I am left without a dedicated healer before my lord and bishop start getting priest spells. Well I managed Wizardry III with the same restriction, surely this won't be an issue.

In BT2, like in BT3, the starter dungeon is actually the hardest part of the game, relatively speaking.
When I replayed BT2 some time ago I quit because it became too easy. I recommend engaging in anti-grind measures to reduce amount of XP you get, and run away from most fights after the starter dungeon.

Wiz 5: I didn't know you could import from Wiz 3?

With this option you can move your characters to Heart Of The Maelstrom from any other Wizardry scenario, except The Return Of Werdna. For the exact intructions, please take a look at the enclosed reference card.

Finally played through the original AoE 2 campaigns all the way from William Wallace to Barbarossa.

It was entertaining, no doubt, but goddamn was it infuriating at times. The atrocious pathfinding, clicking armies around and watch them reshuffle for the umpteenth time killing any momentum; the petty and redundant nature of the AI with their conveyor belt of Paladins and Elite War Elephants slowly eroding my sanity.

But I prevailed in the end. It's no wonder that I never could get through these campaigns as a kid. They generally don't mess around and they do test your patience.

Heh, I just assumed it was not possible, what with a new (?) story line, new designer, and some changes to the game mechanics.
Are the stats for imported characters capped at 15? If so, what is the benefit? Items?

They aren't capped at 15, but seems to be distributed as the game sees fit (probably predetermined based on class). My thief started out with 16 in luck. The total amount of stats which each of my characters has is pretty high, but it has been distributed so that there is a slight overweight in the stats most important for a given class with the result of them all being jack of all trades, master of none. I guess the only benefit is it won't take long to max out stats since minimum in one stat is 12 on any character.

I'm using the same party because fuck me if they aren't a legendary band of do-gooders. They got the > and they got the KD and they even got the * and fuck me if they aren't gonna get their symbol from this game as well.

Hordes of the Underdark: Pretty damn good expansion for NWN, never bothered playing after the core game was so horrible. Turn out, it's not on MOTB level but comes close as an dungeon crawl equivalent, specially after act 1.

Been playing a lot of Day of Infamy, the standalone version of the Insurgency mod. It's my favorite multiplayer shooter right now. It's one of those intense games that make me jump out of my chair every time I die, something I haven't really gotten since Red Orchestra. Community is small but pretty good and the weapons are fun to use. My favorite weapons are the stg-44 (the katana of guns) and the vickers gun. I like the communcation aspect of this game, and how you can hear the other teams local chat if you're close enough. A week ago I was behind enemy lines, crawling across a bridge when I heard two guys on the other team below me arguing about whether or not Rommel was overrated. I threw a grenade down there and gibbed them both. :positive:
