"Ys", for Master System. It has the most attrocious gameplay ever made by man. You have to walk into enemies to hit them.

I think some people here are very narrow minded even if they have some good taste. For them is not enough to say they didn't like some game - they want shit on it. Same as people who like Fallout 4 and Dragon Age Inquisition and can't stand games with "bad" graphics like AoD, Underrail and bunch of old classic RPGs. Fanboys. Fanboys everywhere...

A plague on both your houses.

And about main theme.
Worst 2 RPG I played was DA:Inquisition and Fallout 4. Next worse... Difficult to say. Even DA2 not even close to Inquisition. I think if we speak about classic RPGs - I liked different games for one thing or another and cannot call them really bad.

Maybe Darkest Dungeon dissapoint me most (if roguelite can be called RPG) - it have nice ideas and still game is awful.

Morrowind (Why did they do this to Daggerfall?)

Oblivion (Why did they do this to Morrowind?)

Skyrim (Why did they do this to Oblivion?)

Fixed. We need to represent the decline accurately, which means, in all its horror.

Final Fantasy X

Used to love the old NES/SNES FF games (sans III), but never played anything beyond those for years. I eventually got a PS2 and picked up X and man, what a disappointment. The characters were a bunch of emo effeminate weirdos, gameplay highly linear, and I didn't care for the new combat system. RIP Final Fantasy.

Why not XII? By many it's considered the worst betrayal of the series.

Never played XII...after X I didn't see any reason to ever play another FF game again. If it's worse than X then that's a pretty big accomplishment, though.

I like 12. Definitely a far cry gameplay wise from the classical Final Fantasies but the story wasn't as retarded and gameplay was a lot better.

Here are mine :
Forsaken Gods
Sabotain
Gothic 4
Ultima 2
Witcher 2.

Let's add some more:

The Witcher

Oblivion

Neverwinter Nights

Alpha Protocol
Wtf?!?

Besides “Oblivion”, I didn’t play other popamole games like FO3. I played some jRPG games that are probably worse than the ones I mentioned, but they are console games that are beneath my contempt. The writing in Alpha Turd cannot saved it from its infuriating mini-games, linear corridors and popamoler third-rate combat. The game is garbage. The Witcher has atrocious combat, horrible graphics, awful camera, etc. The writing is not good enough to save the game. The other two are obvious choices.

Time to add some more crappy opinions to this list!

Note 1: I'm generally pretty good at avoiding games which I'm probably going to dislike. Some research and all that.
Note 2: Looking at some of the nonsense people have been posting here, it seems I'm one of the few who doesn't dislike 50% of the official top 72 cRPGs. Guess I just have a high tolerance for RPG stupidness?

Games from the Top 72 I STRONGLY DISLIKED:
  • Albion: One of those games I WANT to like, but playing those first person sections just made me vomit.
  • Wizardry IV - The Return Of Werdna: Who the hell voted on this thing? I'm going to guess people enjoyed it's "challenging" dungeon design, personally I don't get how you're supposed to get even a minute of enjoyment out of this piece of pure torture.

Bad CRPGs:
  • Diablo I & II: A detailed exercise on how to make randomly generated dungeons and equipment boring and meaningless. And this is coming from someone who enjoys playing Roguelikes.
  • Mass Effect 2: I admit that I somewhat enjoyed the original. Yes, it was basically a pretty bad shooter with some minor RPG elements, but did have a story that, while cliché, was at least relatively well told. The sequel in an objectively better shooter, but it has even less RPG elements, a ridiculously stupid story, a bunch a characters that are all "BEHOLD THE UNIQUE QUIRK OF THIS CHARACTER" and it's so easy I only died once in the entire game on Veteran and that was because I was taking a bite from my apple without pausing the game (no joke).
  • Deus Ex - Invisible War: I admit to being a bit impressed by it when I first saw the (now terrible looking) physics engine in action ("So immersive!"). In the end, whatever enjoyable game was buried in there, it's killed off completely by one of the worst engines in gaming history. Ironically, I think that Thief 3 actually manages to be pretty great despite the technical incompetence. Sue me.
  • Gothic 3: I have an incredible amount of love for the first two games, and it just pains me to play this game. There's just nothing left here that made the originals great, and it's loaded with technical issues. I have not played it with the community patches, but I doubt they can fix the rotten core.
  • Ultima IX - Ascension: Cringe-worthy end to a venerable series. I'm sure it's all EA's fault etc. etc., but to me it's obvious no one at Origin had any vision for transitioning into the 3D era either. Ultima VIII was quite the ominous foreboding as well.
  • Might & Magic IX: Also know as "First Person Shooter of Might & Magic"
  • Lionheart - Legacy Of The Crusader: Playing this must be what getting caught in a venus flytrap must feel like. The first hours are fascinating, with the game wooing you into submission with its interesting setting, before quickly devolving into some Diablo-like clusterfuck.
  • Descent To Undermountain: Not sure why I even bothered with this shit. Even it was 100% bug-free and stable, it would still be a stupid, boring, uninspired and unbalanced piece of junk.
  • The Elder Scrolls - Arena: This stuff is just all over the place. There's quite literally no reason whatsoever to play this over Daggerfall (a game that in itself is pretty debatable as well). It's buggy, confusing, hard to control and just plain not fun.
  • Dungeon Lords: Bradley WHAT THE HELL?
  • Jagged Alliance 2 - Wildfire: I'm actually not complaining about the lack of patches it (initially) received. It's just that I don't understand what the point of this game is. A more obtuse and less enjoyable version of the timeless classic that is the original? Uh, no thanks?
  • Pools Of Radiance - Ruins Of Myth Drannor: Another one of the games that, sadly, even if it had been super stable and bug-free, it still would have moved grown men to tears of boredom. I do admit that my memory is quite muddy on this one though.
  • Septerra Core: I suppose it's a brave attempt at merging jRPG with cRPG, but I think the devs should have taken the time to ask themselves why they were even trying to do that in the first place. Boring.

Bad Consoletard RPGs:
  • Fable: Yes, yes, yes, it was disappointing after all the hype etc, etc. But just objectively speaking, this is just a very hollow game that tries it very best to hide whatever RPG elements it has. A boring story, boring and easy combat, very little world interaction, a mere handful of non-story related missions and an overal length of 10-12 hours make this a game to just stay away from. I haven't played the sequels for obvious reasons.
  • Sudeki: I distinctly recall playing most of the game as Mage running backwards and circle strafing... It was quite torturous.
  • Shin Megami Tensei - Persona (PSP Version): The original Persona was already a so-so game, but for the PSP version Atlus decided to take out the moody original soundtrack and replaced it with the most grating J-Pop I've ever heard. I'm assuming they wanted to cash in on the renewed sense of "style" the Persona series received with Persona 3 & Person 4.
  • Persona 3 & 4: I'm actually a fan of the core SMT games, but P3&4 take jRPG grindiness to new ungodly levels. Also it's got the most BORING level-generation algorithm ever. It's just fucking hallways after hallways.
  • White Knight Chronicles: Level-5 was one of those devs that could make jRPGs that had a lot of charm and weren't bogged down by totally random systems (Dark Cloud/Chronicle, DQVIII, Ni No Kuni, Rogue Galaxy). But for some reason they thought robbing a game of personality and giving it MMO-style combat was a good idea here. They only seem to be interested in making multi-media projects these days sadly.
  • Final Fantasy XIII(-2): Previous games in the series may have had a lot of problems, but I enjoyed some of them nonetheless (IV, V, VI. Yes, even X). I fail to understand how Square thought its decision for this turd were in any way addressing those issues. Being completely disconnected from both fanbase and the rest of the world seems like a good explanation.
  • Kingdom Hearts: Where does this series get its fans? You can say about the game all you want, but I played through this game by just spamming the X button. I think that's pretty damn disturbing. Let's not even get me started about its sequel and six trillion spin-offs.
  • Tales Of... Series: In the end, pretty much all of these bog down to relatively boring and clichéd stories with a WHOLE bunch of dry hack and slash sequences for combat. Not what I'd call fun. Some of them pack some charm, most of them don't.
  • Eternal Sonata: Alright, let me give you two facts about this game that should be enough to discredit it. First: it's a pretty disrespectful portrayal of French composer Frédéric Chopin's final hours as seen through a fever-dream he's having on his death-bed. Sounds interesting? Well, yes, if you enjoy the idea that said tuberculosis-induced fever-dream is a colourful anime-style dream that has Chopin being the biggest douche in the history of man-kind while looking pretty much 19 years old and discrediting his companions in the game for being "merely figments of his imagination" while they're just trying to help the bastard. Second: this game's combat system evolves over time! Interesting again? Consider this: it starts out turn based, and by the end of the game it's completely real-time. It's basically the history of Decline in condensed form.
  • Xenogears: Overtly wordy piece of space-nonesense that's up there with its anime-brethren in terms of trite story elements. Not ALL bad though, just massively overrated.
  • Almost every single Gust game: Another one of those fine Japanese companies that just keeps sticking to it's guns, no matter how many people it has traumatizes with the sheer ghastliness of the quality of its previous products.
  • Every single game by Compile Heart: Obviously haven't played them all. I have a friend who enjoys playing these, and I've fucked around with a couple of them. These guys just seem hell-bent on putting out the most mind-numbingly bad and tasteless games ever made. Just have a look at the likes of the Hyperdimension Neptunia games, Mugen Souls, Fairy Fencer F. My head starts spinning just thinking about this shit. The very definition of shitty jRPGs.

That ought to do it +M

Don't think you're allowed to not like those games here on the Codex. Obviously you're not trying hard enough. Please stay still and a member of staff will be along to deal with you shortly. It will be less painful if you don't struggle.

Yeah, as much as I'd like to disagree with anyone disliking Albion, I really can't argue with you there - the first-person sections are definitely a low point for the game.

I wouldn't vote it among my top 15 CRPGs, but I enjoyed it despite it being frustrating at times.
It's a unique game with interesting level design and a strategic aspect (chosing your meat shields).

Sweet, sweet lobotomy!

I think I appreciated what the game was trying to do (the very unique level design, etc.), it just took said elements far, far beyond the realms of enjoyable for me. Dark Heart Of Uukrul is similarly punishing and frustrating IMO, and also has plenty of unique dungeon designs, but still feels like it makes more "sense" than some of the segments from Wiz IV. At least in that game I felt like I might actually be able to beat it (*Cough* at least if I were to man up a little *Cough*).

I'm curious, did anyone complete this without using guides available on the internet? Can anyone comment on how fun it was to play back in the day?
