Previously on The Codex vs. Trent Oster The Black Pits

Taste the exploding brofist!

The Codex barely survived the battle, with half of its members unconscious. How will our heroes fare in the upcoming battles, which are promised to be more and more challenging?

Luckily, it seems that they are also regaining more of their battle prowess with each performance.

Current Status

Lord UnderDark is a formidable opponent for everyone who comes within reach of his sword, although at this point I was already regretting not equipping him with 1H weapon + shield, due to damage difference being negligible with the AC difference quite significant.

Dwelver of Vaults (yeah, I know, it was supposed to be Delver) is our main and most consistent ranged damage dealer, but his defence is pretty bad , as being an archer makes him unable to wear metal armor.

Verbius Pro The Saint is one of the more durable members of the party, although it would not hurt if he had a bit more HP. I probably should have made him a fighter/cleric instead of a priest of Talos.

As it turns out, low level AD&D monks suck, and Jae-Sun is no exception, with all his stats being inferior to a fighter of equal level.

Since this 'adventure' has actually no thieving to do whatsoever, The Becrooked is mostly another (inferior) archer in the party. Her swashbuckler kit makes her a bit better in melee than a standard thief, but not enough to make an actual difference.

Being a sorcer gives Tain Un-Tal tactical flexibility, as opposed to strategic one of the mage. Also, he learns spells on level-ups, instead of from scrolls. Given the limited amount of funds in this module, I think this class was the right choice.

I guess regular ranger would have been a better choice over archer, and a fighter/thief instead of swashbuckler if you wanted to retain some thief skills. Still, it's nice to see some of the slightly rarer classes in action too.

Tain Un-Tal is our only arcane spellcaster and he cannot learn spells from scrolls - but he can cast from scrolls.

Remove magic to clear enemy buffs and dispel magic for debuffs/backup.

Also, everyone gets pre-buffed with protection from fire, to survive the opening fireball, which cannot be really stopped.

This should be easy. Hurry up and... kill... them...? Huh.

This time we had a good start.

Even managing to kill Thardek with relatively low cost (sorry, Jae-Sun).

But it spiralled down quickly from there.

You could think I was playing this like an ass, and you would be right. By this point I was so bored with the whole thing I just wanted to get it over with.

Charming Thardek did not really work out

So Tain Un-Tal distracted him while the main force dealt with Elim Garak.... I mean Elan Garaq - except Delver of Vaults, who kept harassing Baeloth himself (we also hit him with the 2d6 damage ring).

Getting held here would be a problem, if not for the fact that Baeloth was defeated at the same time, so really getting rid of his stone skin and then pestering with with a steady barrage of magical arrows was the whole trick.

And we did not get to kill Thardek after all. Or maybe we did? I really do not remember...

Well, that was underwhelming.

If you have not noticed yourself, this 'adventure' is pretty bad and extremely limited when it comes to what you can do. Creating a balanced party is completely pointless - The Becrooked (thief-swashbuckler) and Jae-Sun (monk) were pretty much useless all the way (nobody can even be pick-pocketed, there are no chests to open, etc.) and Lord Underdark (berserker) would have been 50% better with a one-handed weapon + shield than with his two-hander, because he kept dying very fast despite his high HP. Delver of Vaults (archer), Verbius Pro and Tain Un-Tal were rather useful, even if the latter might have been better as a mage (maybe) rather than sorcerer, because he would have been able to learn more spells.

Thank you for reading and sorry for sucking so much in these fights. I was lazy and just did not have the drive to try to do well most of the time. I also hate spending money on consumables, which is a repeating problem in any RPG I play. Oh well.
