Wasnt it the same with cata and mop that massive cuts were made, and it was said that this shit will come with a patch later, which of course it never did. I remember with cataclysm the mastery which ended as a new banal stat should be a way to customize your char with a new talent tree and such. It sounded good until someone said "lol we cut that shit and now you may do more damage!"

So I am gathering up a list of things wrong with Mists of Pandaria

I'm assuming you mean WoD?

Word of mouth from beta testers has been negative.

This is pretty generic. What do the testers not like?
Crap, I meant WoD, though some also apply to the current state of WoW, which will also carry on into MoP.

Most of the complaints were directed at a disappointment at class changes and how fast you hit the level cap.

It's been the same with every expansion since Wrath: see, e.g., the entire Azjol-Nerub zone that was scrapped. To the dude assembling his 'list,' I don't know why you'd need one. There's been a steady push for years promoting casual/grindy like content over challenging dungeons/raids/whatever. It's fun for about a month but wears off after that.

It's been the same with every expansion since Wrath: see, e.g., the entire Azjol-Nerub zone that was scrapped.

Ah forgot about that. It gets even worse if you think about how they (starting with wrath) talk about expansion features over a yaer before it gets released, dont update anything in game (I think the last raid tier in wrath was "current" for over a year) an then cut shit at the last moment. Especially annoying if you liked pvp and they started talking about needed pvp changes and that everything will be better after the new expansion... you just have to wait!

When you have a baked-in audience that won't abandon you then there's no incentive to be creative. Most of the 'new features' are just repackaged from existing mechanics. As noted Garrisons are little more than phased daily hubs -- no different than the assault on Firelands outdoor area. Or, honestly, Isle of Quel'Danas back in TBC. It's just that it progresses at your pace versus the server's. And while I'd be interested in playing around for a few weeks it isn't enough to justify $70+ for the 'box' plus subscription fees when I could buy multiple games on sale for that price.

I've been spending a lot of time with it lately and WoW Classic looks and plays better than "modern" post-Activision WoW. Such an incline. It's Diablo2 compared to Diablo3 pretty much.

All you needed to say was the new expansion costs 10 dollars more to purchase and has less content than previous expansions.

Man, and I thought the official WoW forums were down on the game. :) I had a good time with Mists. It's low-pressure (unless, I guess, you're in a serious raiding guild) and fun to run around and explore. Video games overpromising and underdelivering is pretty par for the course so I don't know that I'd be any madder over it when Blizzard does it than for any other company, really.

In a moment of insanity I bought a month of game time (mostly at the request of a friend) since I had nothing else to play (dodged the Derp Rising 3 bullet). As I initially thought, it gets boring after two weeks. The Timeless Isle thing is an interesting way for new players/alts to gear up but after a week or so of 'farming' the place it gets extremely dull. Getting ilevel 489 epics is pretty easy and you can cover all slots in a matter of days. Some people are crazy and farm coins for this thing that upgrades individual pieces by another forty or ilevels. I guess that made sense a year ago when this was released but why people do that now with an expansion coming in two months is beyond me. That and people still buy epics for 15k gold on the AH when they'll just be rendered obsolete by some level 95 quest reward. Of course I've probably blown a few thousand gold getting gems for my character's gear... which is fairly pointless since I doubt I'll be playing WoD. But hey, that gold is worthless to me, anyway. Inflation is crazy since you can make about 500g a day in thirty minutes of daily quests. The highest end metal bar costs around 300g per bar. Older content materials that everyone and their mother farms because of CRZ costs just as much.

WoW remains a fun game to play for about a month at a time every couple of years but any kind of prolonged subscription is a waste of your entertainment dollar.

Face it; most of the people who complain about "casuals" are obnoxious neckbeard losers who try to assign a sense of importance and "fulfillment" to something that has absolutely no inherent value in itself. Nobody in their right mind is going to send CVs and motivational letters to bind himself to showing up on Raid @7pm instead of going outside.

If you progressed through raid tiers without LFR, good for you. But a game like TBC, where ~2% of playerbase saw Illidan Stormrage at all is retarded by definition.


I wouldn't say that. Many of the people I played with in past MMO's were professionals (ie upper level careers, with many 40+ hours), had families, weekly outdoor hobbies (Hunting, sports, etc...), ie... "a life" outside of the games we played. Now complaining about EQ raids of the past (competitive, time windows, unable to scheduled ahead of time, etc...), those were "retarded" as only those without a life could really attend them, but WoW offered the ability for guilds to schedule raids around membership to where it was convenient. There is no reason to make such content easy as anyone can find the time to attend and succeed. The objection then at that point is simply people not wanting any difficulty in play. That is fine and all, but some want more than a glorified chat room, they enjoy the difficulty of an encounter, the process of continued failure until that point where the group comes together and succeeds. Certainly some find that a waste of time, and that as I said is fine, but some find sitting around playing a video game that offers no real purpose other than to spin ones wheels as a waste of time. Many people enjoy not only the challenge in RL, but the challenge in play. It is the challenge of a game that provides the entertainment for some. /shrug

One thing that I find striking as WoW progresses with new expansions is the dungeon design. To me, most of the original dungeons (Blackrock Spire, Blackrock Depths, Stratholme) were downright epic in size and feel. There were many reasons to run these dungeons; both for loot and quests and in many cases a quest might have you running a dungeon multiple times. In many cases you didn't even do a complete clearing; for Strat it was live side / dead side and in BRD it seemed most people would clear to Emperor and skip other areas. CC was critical; it wasn't this stupid AOE fest you have now. The process of finding groups led to social interactions and that was how you would forge friendships in the game.

When BC came out, you still had some difficult dungeons but they started turning into cattle chutes; they felt like amusement part rides. It felt like you were clearing down one huge hallway with a few turns thrown in. In MoP it has gotten to the point where you practically sprint through heroics; some of them I have finished literally in under 10 minutes.

I am not really clear why we can't have the epic experience of fighting through a huge city with no clear path to take like you did in BRD, or a choice of how to approach the dungeon like with LBRS. I am sure you could make it into a discussion about focus on more casual gameplay but I feel when it comes to the PvE dungeon experience, the game has been taking step after step backwards.

Yeah, I guess I am just nostalgic for the 'good old days' of WoW. Post WoTLK, both content and lore-wise it seems to have been a steady downward spiral. I have been playing on the emu server Emerald Dream. Unfortunately, it seems like most of the guilds are EU guilds and thus all the action is happening when I can't be online :(

Yeah, Blackrock Depths in particular was my favorite MMO dungeon of all time, such a huge, nonlinear instance. It took me so many runs through it before I had a good idea of where everything was. Most groups that ran it would just find maybe 1/10th of the content. Ultilmately though, Blizzard followed the profits, and despite being incredibly successful in the "gamer" space, they wanted more and more money, which lead them to seek outside audiences, like casuals. Casuals don't care about the things gamers care about, in fact, most of those things that bring enjoyment to gamers are a hassle to the casuals.

World PvP was instanced out into Battlegrounds and Arenas, LFG tools were introduced so casuals wouldnt have to spend time getting to know their fellow players, teleportation replaced actual travel, dungeons and quests became simpler, leveling became faster, everything became easier to get. And here we are.

The BC dungeons are all linear as fuck, and some of them being an actual series of endless hallways (I'm looking at you, Shattered Halls). The best one in the expansion is probably Escape from Durnholde: while it is an escort quest for most of the game there is a lot of fun stuff to be found if you go exploring (discovering the forging of the Ashbringer, Benj before he became cranky, Captain Sanders prior to him burying his treasure (and showing off his ship), a still living Kel'Thuzad talking about necromancy with Helcular and the revelation that Sally Whitemane is underaged.

Good stuff.

So Blizzard threw a WoD beta my way (I guess they're desperate to attract more sales after giving me free MoP) and I decided to play around for about an hour. At first I thought the whole Garrison thing was optional but what's the third quest after you finish the mandatory introductory scenario? You guessed it: build your garrison! They've turned this game into Farmville.
