Hey guys, this will be my first LP.

I will be playing Original War.

Original_War_cover.jpg

WHAT THE HELL IS ORIGINAL WAR?
Original War is a RTS/RPG hybrid where you deal with limited resources, limited personel... and sabertooth tigers. The game centers around time traveling armies fighting for a special resource called 'siberite/alaskite'. Why it has two names? Well its PLOT so I wont spoil you. Also if you didn't already realize the games name is kind of a pun.

Also the game can be a total bitch if you don't know what you are supposed to do. And some levels are just NINTENDOHARD.

THIS is a wiki link so you can read up on the game but don't spoil yourselves too much guys.

THIS is a link to the games GoG page. BUY. IT. NOW. It's that good. And it costs only $6. (note - they have temporarily pulled the game from the store for whatever reason)

THIS is a link on Steam.

So here, have the intro that I found on the net.

And in the meanwhile I will start the game and franticaly make screenshots of each line of text in the game so I can transcript it for your viewing pleasure. Don't worry I will explain the games mechanics while we play :)

So lets start in the main menu! I will also provide you with the OST so you can listen while you read ;-)

Welcome to the main menu.
fxNrUbA.jpg

Lets go into Campaign submenu.
LgnAfi8.jpg

We will be playing the American campaign at first (because the russian one is a BITCH), as it is also the tutorial for the game.
This is the mission select screen, we won't be seeing it for some time :)
kfK9aDi.jpg

So let' jump into our first mission 'Surprise Party'.
Sorry byt the cutscenes will look like this, can't persuade the game to display them properly. Well it's still better then no cutscenes :)

Our first cutscene, in my opinion those are gorgeous, with a nice art style, but wait till you see the Russian ones, those are just special ;-)

Mission 1: Surprise Party
2015_06_28_174417.jpg

Coordinates: Central Siberia, March 21, 2004
Lt. John Macmillan is now a member of the expedition with the objective of mining and moving the massive Siberite deposits to what will, one day, be Alaska. He is preparing for the journey to the past.

This is John Macmillan, our hero for this Campaign.
John_Mc_Millan.png

And this is Joan Fergusson, our hero's sweethart.
Joan.jpg

The mission starts with our hero preparing to leave:
O5WZ2tn.jpg
: Group 9 prepare now: Donaldson, Williams, Macmillan, Sikorski, Phillips, Grant. Go to EON.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: So, this is it.
tWc94o2.jpg
: I'm going to miss you, John.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Maybe you could get transferred!
tWc94o2.jpg
: My work's here.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: I know that. I just wish we met some other time.
tWc94o2.jpg
: Maybe we will! Take care of yourself.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Yeah. You too.

So it starts on a sad note, our hero and his sweethart separated by eons!

This is how the game screen looks like.
gttgChU.jpg

We can see John in the middle, he is the soldier class. Yes there are classes in this game. 4 to be precise: soldier, engineer, mechanic and scientist. The roles are self-explanatory really.
Soldiers are good at shooting things, engineers can build structures, mechanics build and drive vehicles and scientists work both as eggheads and medics.
The 3 basic structures here are the depot (north, actualy 3 depots), armoury (east) and lab (west).

Okay lets move towards the EON.
BGYedJT.jpg

Other soldiers from our group are waiting for us before we step into the past.

And as always in military, we have bigger and smaller smartasses bickering about :D
O5WZ2tn.jpg
: Everybody ready? If you want to quit, quit now. You ain't got the balls we don't want you going.
yIDo9qe.jpg
: So what the hell are the women doing here?
t9K27eT.jpg
: We got less between our legs than you, but a hell of a lot more between the ears Sikorski.

And we are given our first choice, yes it's this kind of game. While the choices mostly don't have much bearing on the story in some missions you can make your life easier through them.
ZGRrD7S.jpg

Also we can be a chickenshit here and bail out from the expedition.
:cmcc:
Yup we are bailing out it's not worth it!

We are granted another cutscene.

And our first game over ;-) Now this was one short game right? NOPE let's rewind this.

ig6DFl9.jpg
: One more step and no more 21'st century. It's gotta be a good move!

We are greeted by a loading screen and taken back to 2000000 B.C.

Coordinates: Somewhere in Siberia; 2,000,000 years BC
Having entered the EON, John took the irrevocable step into the past. God only knows what expects him there.

Um2g3QO.jpg

Untouched by human hand! But wait, what is that a road?
gGqDxRX.jpg

Wonder if we can hitch a ride?
0hR6Fkp.jpg

Nope... they don't like hichhikers here. This is our first meeting with prehistoric humans as it seems, they are highly advanced! This will revise the history books, that is if we can save Macmillans life.

So lets play this seriously.
In the beginning of this mission we are 'greeted' by Commander Powell.
Powell_over_radio.jpg

AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: What a place. Untouched since the dawn of time. And not a tourist for 2 million years! (over radio) This is Lt John Macmillan reporting for duty. Alpha, do you read me? Come in Alpha, this is Lt. Macmillan. Alpha, do you...
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (weak, noisy voice over radio) Get off the radio now!
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Thanks for the welcome, who...
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: You heard me, soldier! Shut up and move!
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Identify yourself.
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: This is your last warning. If you want to live get your head down and get out. You want to die then stay right there.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Shit! What is this?

Powell is a dick, but we decide to listen to his advice.
r2Yw31U.jpg

We hide in the bushes and see 2 soldiers comming.
Soldier 1: The signal comes from the hill.
Soldier 2: Quick, before he moves!
Soldier 1: Too late! The bastard is gone.
Soldier 2: He'll never get through the front line. He lives now, but not for long.

They sound strangely Russian. But we disregard that, they MUST be apemen, right? +M

Moments later we meet our first friend in this unfriendly world, Bobby Brandon. Bobby is a mechanic and a crappy soldier, also he got shot.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Identify yourself!
Bobby.jpg
: Don’t hurt me!
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: I’m not gonna hurt you buddy. Just tell me your name and what’s going on.
Bobby.jpg
: Corporal Bobby Brandon, sir.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: What happened?
Bobby.jpg
: I don’t know anything, sir. I just stepped into the EON, the next thing I knew I was here and being shot at.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Who were they?
Bobby.jpg
: I didn’t wait to find out. I was just trying to stay alive...
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: You’re hurt pretty bad, we got to get you some treatment.
Bobby.jpg
: Go ahead, call 911!
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: We’ll get you to Alpha base. They’ll patch you up there.
Bobby.jpg
: Have you made contact?
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Just about. All they said was keep our heads down and get moving. So let’s go. On your feet, Bobby.

YQ1R7cm.jpg

The wound mechanics work like this - if your health is above 50% you can still regenerate (slowly, very slowly), when it falls below that your health doesn't regenerate anymore. When health falls below ~20% you fall down and start to bleed out untill a medic helps you or you die.

A moment later we get another call from Powell.
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (weak, noisy voice over radio) Listen up. There are three of you in the area. Form a group and head Northeast, repeat, head Northeast. We’ll try to get you out.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: What is going on here? Who’s attacking us?
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: Stick to the long grass and avoid the roads or you’ll be seen.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: I said what the hell is going on here? Who are you?
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: I’m Commander Powell and if you make it to Alpha you’re in deep shit, soldier. I told you not to use the radio, the enemy’s tracing your signal. Use this frequency again and you’re dead!

Okay we decide to move, but first a little gunnery practice.
jS1nVeD.jpg

Your soldiers learn by doing, each attack earns them experience.

Okay lets get a move on, we have to watch it when we are crossing the road, there is a tank driving about, also some soldiers patrol the area.
zcXQC09.jpg

We get to a hill across the road and get 2 transmissions on the radio. One from a man with slight russian accent telling us to go directly north for rescue. After that Powell contacts us again and says not to trust that guy.
Game prompts us if we want to clarify things over the radio.
HALO051.jpg

I decide not to, after all we are being triangulated. Also we probably should trust Powell here (even though he is a dick).

We head a little north and we find Cyrus Parker, our third soldier on this mission.
ELEoRrF.jpg

AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: What’s your name soldier?
Cyrus_small.jpg
: Cyrus Parker sir. The bastards really dropped us in it huh? Head North East! Great grid reference, I don’t think so!
Bobby.jpg
: The Lt. has a compass.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: It’s all the info. We’ve got for now so let’s use it.

So we head further north east. And we meet 2 soldiers guarding the pass that call for reinforcements. I order John and Cyrus to attack directly and aggro the shots, then send Bobby in to add some more firepower.
SNF6lkK.jpg

It ends up with 2 dead bodies and a clear path to victory.
6XRVYWP.jpg

And such we accomplish the first mission with all medals (3 represent main and secondary objectives, while the lower one represents 'no save scumming' achieved).

And the intermission screen. After each mission you get bonus XP for all your men, you can chose only one specialisation though. The XP is persistent and so are your soldiers deaths. So it's advised to not lose anyone!

One of my favorite games.

It was sooo much fun back in its day. In fact, the game holds pretty damn well even by today's standarts.

Can I suggest that you play it on a Master Strategist level? It isn't fun if it is not tasteful.

You know that you can unpack the campaign maps from game resourses and copy/paste the text instead of transcripting it, right? Right?

Hot damn, thanks Nevill you just made this so much easier on me. Also Master Strategist is a little steep, I'm worried about my sanity and later missions (mostly one timed SOB of a mission) :P While I think I will just do this on the standard difficulty, there will be enough tears when I will have restart some missions because bad luck/planning :D Also even more tears when we play as the Russians...

Russian campaign, mission 6 is one of my all-time favorites. The Rance series as a whole has less rape in them than what the game had in store for our party of seven brave, but very foolish men. And then if forces you to split your already lacking team...

Manly tears were shed trying to get the no-reloads medal.

Anyway, will you be linking the full intro explaining what the EON is and why John is taking the mission at all?

I've found this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMIP3QvKxRg
I can't find the cinematics in English separately, only in Czech.

Time for Mission 2. 'Stealing the Steel'.

Music

2015_06_28_174558.jpg

Macmillan has avoided capture by the enemy forces. But he's still in more danger than he knows.
Somewhere in Siberia, some 2,000,000 years B.C.

Our group enters a new area and breaks into chat.
iZOtsPz.jpg
: How did our ancestors get this tooled up? Their weapons are better than ours.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: They’ve got to be from the future same as us. Probably Russians....
D0L4jUk.jpg
: Like every country has a time machine these days!?
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: You got a better explanation? Whoever they are they want to stop us.

And promptly get ambushed...

Lisa_Lawson_small.jpg
: (appears from grass by Macmillan) And it won’t be hard! You wanna be more careful. Lisa Lawson, sir. (two engineers appear from behind trees)

By friendlies, thankfully.

AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Lieutenant John Macmillan. Can you tell me what's going on here?
Lisa_Lawson_small.jpg
: Sure, we've got an order to wait and see what happens. That’s all the info I’ve got and I don’t like it.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Hold on, they’re trying to get through.
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (weak signal over radio) Alpha Base here. Listen up. The enemy are based seven miles North of you and we are beyond them.
iZOtsPz.jpg
: This just keeps getting better!
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Shut up and listen, Parker.
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) Survey the area and contact all other survivors.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (into radio) And then what?
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) I warned you, Macmillan! Try to capture an outlying Russian building, consolidate your position and await further orders.
iZOtsPz.jpg
: Great idea! We’re outgunned and outnumbered, at last we die heroes!
D0L4jUk.jpg
: It’s crazy, if we kill their guys we’ve got to wait for their friends to come looking?! Let’s put a bullet in our brains now?
Lisa_Lawson_small.jpg
: Size of yours it’d be hard to hit.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: You heard the Colonel. He gave an order. We do what the man says.

So they actualy are Russians... Well my apemen theory bites the dust :-( Also Powell is still a dick. I begin to see a pattern here...

So we got 3 new members to our group, Lisa Lawson - a pretty good soldier (but not at all a pretty lady) and 2 engineers (faceless grunts from now on, we won't be seeing them further into the game).
pp6Y7cC.jpg

Only way to proceed is north.
Quickly we meet our first scientist (and a such a medic). Hes name is Paul Khattam and he is a filthy kebab. But hey, we need a medic.
Paul_Khattam.jpg
: Allah be praised! I cannot believe the EON worked ! I thought I was going to die.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: If we hadn’t got here you would have. The Russians are killing our people.
Paul_Khattam.jpg
: Russians?
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Don’t ask me how they got here but they’re good soldiers with good kit.
Paul_Khattam.jpg
: I owe you my life Lieutenant. I hope I can repay you.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Tell me what you can do and you can make a start.
Paul_Khattam.jpg
: I am a nuclear physicist, my name is Paul Khattam.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Great, you were working on the EON and you thought it wouldn’t work?
Paul_Khattam.jpg
: When you know everything that can go wrong it takes a lot of courage to get inside! Even scientists need faith now and again.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: You sure will now.
Paul_Khattam.jpg
: I can see some of you already saw action. I'll have a look at the wound if you remove that filthy rag.
OnJqWsy.jpg

I order him to heal Bobby and after that we continue our journey northward. Also I just love how nuclear physicists know first aid and trained soldiers don't :D

Soon our eyes see this atrocity.
BNxMHFl.jpg

iZOtsPz.jpg
: Christ, I’m going to puke. Take a look at the bodies.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: All our guys and all dead.
Paul_Khattam.jpg
: They’ve been like this a few days.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: We’ve got to keep moving people. Let’s go.

We start to move eastward and get to this little surprise.
ZcypPB0.jpg

AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: There’s no way we’re going through without more firepower. Retreat!

A damned bunker. I order my guys to retreat. Two foolish Russians follow (a soldier and a scientist) and get gunned down. Good for us, bad for them.
vIS9RyW.jpg

I order my A-Team to heal up and move out southward towards that river you see on the minimap in hope to find a alternate route to attack the Russian base.

On our way we find a place where we can ford the river. I send the soldiers first and they find another American soldier getting gunned down by 2 Russians. We jump in to help him, promptly kill the assailants and heal the ally.
7fsXE4x.jpg

Unfortunately his friend got killed.
leJUyKI.jpg

We heal everyone and move eastward. There is a little forest directly south of the Russian base so I decide to creep through it, far enough so the bunkered Russian can't get hits on us. Two soldiers show up and get gunned down. This way the base is only defended by this one asshole behind the sandbags.
OiJ0ZbI.jpg

I heal everyone and move back into the forrest and continue to move east. We find ANOTHER bunker, this is not getting easier. I order my guys to get on the deck so they are harder to hit and press the attack.
em8LgaJ.jpg

The bunker get's demolished and the guy hiding in it got filled with lead. As you can see I ordered one of our soldiers to fallback when his health was low, so our kebab medic can heal him. We move further east.
Bc4toqK.jpg

After killing 2 guards and a driver we find a small motorpark with 2 tanks, I order Macmillan and Brandon to get into the vehicles (I want Macmillan to improve his driving skill and Brandon is just good).
D0L4jUk.jpg
: Weird vehicles man. Ain't seen nothing like this before.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Check them out Bobby, they’ve gotta beat walking our way through the front-line. So? How does it look?
D0L4jUk.jpg
: I’ve driven worse boss. But if this is the fuel gauge, we’re running on empty!
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: OK go easy, the next gas station’s two million years away.

Lisa_Lawson_small.jpg
: So what do you think, lieutenant?
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: It’s a hell of a machine! Looks more like a bulldozer than a tank.

Another mechanic in this game is building capturing - the building must be unoccupied for this. You send your engineers in and they paint it your colour, done :D
ifIIFeE.jpg

We have a little chat with Alpha.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (into radio) Lt Macmillan reporting to Alpha. We’re now in command of a Russian installation. Where do we go from here Colonel?
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) Once we establish your exact location we’ll be on our way. Till then maintain your position and gather deposited supplies...If you’re where we think then you’ve one more base in the area. Try to capture it.
iZOtsPz.jpg
: You want to stop talking to that guy Lieutenant, he has some really bad ideas.

Nobody likes Powell.

Okay we prepare to level that second damned bunker.
BDLHNEO.jpg

Tanks will attack first and infantry will strike after that.
MyGTTDr.jpg

After we kill this last Russian soldier we capture the enemy base and repair the bunker, we might need it later. We radio in our success.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (into radio) Lt Macmillan calling Alpha. We’ve captured the second Russian base. Awaiting further instructions.
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) Maintain your position and gather as many crates as you can in the northern base. Transport the crates from the eastern base there too. We’ll be in touch.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (into radio) Sir, I’d appreciate it if you could fill me in on....
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) I told you to stay off the air Macmillan! You can ask questions when you get here. Your call sign is now Cobra 1. Await further instructions and don’t contact me. Have you got that?
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (into radio) Yes sir.
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) You better have Macmillan.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (cynically) Cobra 1 out.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Let’s get to it. Keep your eyes open or the only material we’ll collect is lead.

We create a logistics patch between our 2 depots, transporting crates to our newly taken base, as per Powell's orders. (I forgot to make screens how to do it, but it will be used again sometime).

There is a second forest between the two bases. Before you capture the second base it is empty and safe, but just after you begin transporting the crates, bam, it spawns two sabretooth tigers in it just to fuck with you, the game is a BITCH like this. So I sent my soldiers to clean it up (also forgot the screenshots, sorry).

After a while a Russian driver materializes up right at our doorstep and is promptly caught.
Mikhail_small.jpg
: What happened? Who are you? Where is Sasha?
Cyrus_small.jpg
: See you in hell comrade.
Mikhail_small.jpg
: Please! Don’t shoot. I am not soldier...
Cyrus_small.jpg
: Course not. You’re just taking a vacation!
Mikhail_small.jpg
: I can explain...
Cyrus_small.jpg
: Not with a bullet in your head. Time to die soldier.
Mikhail_small.jpg
: I am NOT soldier! I am civilian! Please, listen to me...
sqqidPc.jpg

We take him prisoner and interrogate about what the hell is going on here.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Good work soldier.
Mikhail_small.jpg
: I am not soldier.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: No-one’s talking to you Sputnik!
Mikhail_small.jpg
: I am no Sputnik. I am Mikhail.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: If you’re not a soldier what are you doing here?
Mikhail_small.jpg
: I am engineer, from Moscow Institute. I not want to be here. I have no choice. Comrade Solyanov says our duty to save resource.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Solyanov?
Mikhail_small.jpg
: I like American, hamburger, good food...
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: Shut up! Who is Solyanov.
Mikhail_small.jpg
: Alexy Solyanov! President of Russia...
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: I’ve never heard of him buddy.
Mikhail_small.jpg
: He was elected, 2002 you must know...
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: I was there in 2002 Prokhorov was President.
Mikhail_small.jpg
: Solyanov – President fourteen years. But you want Prokhorov is Prokhorov.
Cyrus_small.jpg
: What do you make of it Lt?
Mikhail_small.jpg
: Either the guy’s full of shit or he’s from a different future.
Cyrus_small.jpg
: How do you make that out sir, you mean it’s already changed?
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: I don’t know and right now I don’t care. We’ve got here and now to deal with. We’ll interrogate the guy later. Lock him in the depot and make sure he doesn’t move.

Mikhail is a pretty cool guy, he's not Sputnik, likes hamburgers (good food) and all that. So we lock him up in the depot and post a guard. Just to be extra sure he stays with us, Americans, that he likes so much ;-)

In the meantime a enemy truck drove into our base and promptly ran away when the driver saw that something is not right (it was red yesterday!)

Russian Driver: Nastasa Styepanovna, we are here, open some vodka!
Russian Driver: This isn’t possible... something bad happened here, something terrible...Quick, Nikolay, we must return.
Nameless Grunt: Their commander’s gonna be happy when they get home.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: So happy he’ll send troops down here to take us out. Let’s make sure we’re ready for them.

We build some additional bunkers and started to wait for enemy counterattack.
mMfy1be.jpg

Didn't have to wait for too long actually, enemy had one tank and four soldiers. I targeted the soldiers first as they are squishier but still deal considerable damage, tank went next.
0E8axga.jpg

We get a transmission from Powell and a mission accomplished screen.

Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) Alpha calling Cobra 1. We picked up the Russian broadcasts. Sounds like you did a good job. Time to move. Take what you can then destroy the depots. Head North East and after one mile you’ll be met by Captain Cornell, he’s in charge of a second group. Await further orders there.
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (into radio) Andy Cornell..?
Powell_over_radio_small.jpg
: (over radio) Macmillan!
AAA_Macmillan.jpg
: (into radio) Cobra 1 Out. (mission accomplished)

We get all the medals :)
- lots of resources
- minimal losses
- succefully guarding the prisoner
isuIARh.jpg

And the intermission screen.

Mission 3. Breaking Through.

Music

2015_06_28_174625.jpg

Macmillan and his soldiers succeeded in capturing the depot. A tougher challenge lies ahead - to break through the Russian lines and join the rest of the US forces in the North.
Approximately 20 miles south of Alpha base; 2,000,000 years B.C.

We enter the map area from the south-east and are greeted by John’s friend Andy. Andy is an Afro-American soldier with a Scottish accent. Sometimes the actor choice for the dub is ridiculous. :D
gRclIJA.jpg

ig6DFl9.jpg
: Cornell!
pJInL8q.jpg
: John! I didn’t know you were here!
ig6DFl9.jpg
: If they’d said you were coming I wouldn’t be! (sincerely) Good to see you Andy.
pJInL8q.jpg
: Likewise old buddy. So who’s your friend here?
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Mikhail? He’s an engineer, could be useful, except he’s Russian.
pJInL8q.jpg
: Plenty of them. You learn anything about their mission?
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Not yet. Right now I’m not even sure what future they’re from.
pJInL8q.jpg
: What do you mean?
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Ask him a question about our time, like who was Hitler. Says he’s never heard of him.
pJInL8q.jpg
: Could be lying.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Why’s he gonna do that? When we get through here give him a history quiz.
pJInL8q.jpg
: If we get through. Anyway, I’ll take him with me.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: We should have a good chance going in as one unit.
pJInL8q.jpg
We’re not. Powell just radioed. Said there are more guys around here and your orders are to find them. Then we attack the Russian line at different points. While they’re busy killing one of us the other goes through.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: I like my way better. Then there’s a chance we all succeed.
pJInL8q.jpg
: Try telling Powell.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Don’t worry I will. (into radio) Cobra 1 to Alpha base. We’ve rendezvoused with Cobra 2, request permission to proceed as one unit.
Powell_Akk.jpg
: (over radio) Your job’s to follow orders Macmillan, not question them! Tell Cornell to proceed eastward and wait for the signal to attack. You take four soldiers and join the camp in the South West. You’ll both attack on my order and we’ll give you support. Do you understand? (Powell...)
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Yes sir.
pJInL8q.jpg
: Great, you sorted that one out.
3vqytfS.jpg
: I have a feeling the support will be minimal.
Cyrus_Akk.jpg
: Sweet FA.
qnKG6V8.jpg
: Give things a chance will you. Powell managed to get to the North, maybe he knows something we don’t.
Cyrus_Akk.jpg
: Yeah? Then the bastard should tell us!
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Take it easy buddy.
pJInL8q.jpg
: You too, John. (Cornell and his group leave)

The plot thickens, an alternate future, uh? Well this rises some questions and creates a paradox, but lets leave it alone for the plot's sake :)

After this little conversation we have to pick who we will be taking with us an who goes with Cornell. Unfortunately Andy took our pet Russian, and I liked that guy!
oG9MoLF.jpg

I gave him 2 of our least useful men and clicked OK. He took his squad north.
S4lC6Pl.jpg

We follow the orders and travel west, I put Brandon behind the wheel of our transport. I believe the amount of crates inside the transport depends upon how many crates we had in the last mission.
tDli1sG.jpg

On the way to our destination we meet a small Russian patrol.
lWio23x.jpg

We promptly fill them with lead and continue on our merry way. Also Macmillan got a level up in his soldiering skills :) As I said before skills improve by using them (while the intermission bonuses are also a big boost to soldier skills).
nvU39Zp.jpg

A little farther we finally get to the little American depot and have a little talk with its current CO.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: My name’s Macmillan. Major Powell ordered us to join you.
Random_Guy.jpg
: Then he sure doesn’t like you guys. (I have the same feeling about this, don't you?)
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Our orders are to break through the Russian line.
Random_Guy.jpg
: Never said nothing to me...
ig6DFl9.jpg
: That’s because I’m in command here now. Do what I tell you and we’ve a chance of getting through. Mess me around and we’re all dead. Is that clear?
Random_Guy.jpg
: Yes sir.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: OK. So what are we facing here?
Random_Guy.jpg
: They’ve got tanks all along the roads.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: So the jeeps are no go.
Random_Guy.jpg
: And this is where they’ve got their weapons sighted.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: That makes the meadows a shooting range.
Random_Guy.jpg
: And they’ve got strong patrols this way, they know the woods inside out. I’m telling you Lt., it’s a suicide mission!
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Another group’s going in from the East, between us we’ll split the Russians and at least one of party should get through.
Random_Guy.jpg
: While the other lot gets their brains blown out.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: We’re here to do a job soldier, let’s get on with it.

We are shown some enemy positions on the map. I order a laboratory to be built and offload our crates into the depot. Brandon will be making rounds to find crates until his fuel runs out.
tFuqAsH.jpg

After a few crates are brought in to the depot Macmillan asks the resident egghead what IS in those crates?

ig6DFl9.jpg
: What did we get in the shipments?
Random_Guy_2.jpg
: Variety of stuff sir. Mainly solar power components.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Good. Do you think you could squeeze enough juice from them to run a vehicle?
Random_Guy_2.jpg
: It wouldn’t get close to the Russian combustion engines, but it would be lighter.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: So we could mount small weapons and still outrun them?
Random_Guy_2.jpg
: I’ll do what I can, but until we’ve got a lab and a workshop it’s not a lot.

After the lab is up and running I send the egghead, kebab and Macmillan inside (the scientists skills are additive and speed up research).

Also I order a workshop, pronto! And begin the design of a solar engine.
8UaG6yu.jpg
QSacgb7.jpg

Oh and also about the engineers - they are the only ones that can start construction of a building but after that anyone can join in on the fun. ;-) Also they have a bonus to building speed. But later there will be more efficient ways of constructing stuff.

Meanwhile an American soldier enters our base from north.
iZcY6Ll.jpg

ig6DFl9.jpg
: Who the hell are you?
JofaPpH.jpg
: Corporal Frank Forsyth reporting sir. (reveals fog) I have some information for you.
qnKG6V8.jpg
: Frank!
JofaPpH.jpg
: Lisa! Still alive! Russians must be getting sloppy!
qnKG6V8.jpg
: Lieutenant, let me introduce the best scout the force has ever known. Corporal Forsyth. He can take pictures inside your ass and you wouldn’t even know!
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Do you do anything more useful Forsyth?
JofaPpH.jpg
: I bring back the papers!
ig6DFl9.jpg
: You what?
JofaPpH.jpg
: While I was in the Russian camp I took a trip to the latrines and... Nothing to wipe their ass on the can any more.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: You really hit them where it hurts.
JofaPpH.jpg
Sap the morale sir, that’s my MO.
qnKG6V8.jpg
: Just does it to his own side now and again.
JofaPpH.jpg
: With your permission I’d like to get back out there sir.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Why? Have you finished reading those?

We get another choice. I let Frank go to ‘scout’, he can look out for himself (and will find his own way through enemy lines, so this makes my work easier). ;-)
akbyArc.jpg

JofaPpH.jpg
: Thank God for that. I thought I’d never move again.

I realy like Frank's character, he has some nice lines along the road. :)

Soon after I’m finished with all available research, so I send the scientists to the finished workshop to change their profession to drivers and start on the vehicle building. I also recycle the Russian truck and the lab (a useful feature, in many missions your resources are highly limited).
LZabeDk.jpg

And here is our first ‘tank’, actually it’s more of a buggy.
gVuEFbT.jpg

ig6DFl9.jpg
: Not bad for a first try!
Random_Guy_2.jpg
: The solar panels can’t generate all the power it uses so we added the batteries. So when the vehicle isn’t using energy it’s storing it up for later.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: You mean if I want to go a distance I’ve got to take a break for a recharge?
Random_Guy_2.jpg
: I’m sorry, we’ve done all we could sir.
ig6DFl9.jpg
I’ll remember that when it gives up outside the Russian base!

And some reactions about the quality of our gear.

ig6DFl9.jpg
When it comes to technology we’re still just a little behind the Russians! (drives little bit forward and back) I’ve got to say I felt kind of safer in the Russian tank.
qnKG6V8.jpg
: (she tries to drive in circles) It handles better than the Russian one and it’s faster. I wouldn’t recommend ramming the Russians but we can sure outrun them.
Cyrus_Akk.jpg
: No leg room! This whole mission’s economy class! Makes you realize how good the Russian one was.
Brandon_Akk.jpg
: Doesn’t give you that much protection but it’s better than running.

Soon we have a second one ready to go so I send them to scout for crate shipments.
BuL9L9Y.jpg

We build more vehicles in the meantime. Two Russian scouts come out of the FOW and start to escape for their base. We run them down with our buggies.
PqiZh76.jpg

Also I recycled my bunkers and sent Cyrus and Lisa to become drivers and help with our team's mechanization.

The buggies are ordered to return to base and repair their damage.
gRvzVw3.jpg

After another one of our wunderwaffe is built I become a little bolder and scout deeper into the no man's land. My forces find some soldiers and a tank, orders are to kill the squishies first and the tank last.
efe6N5p.jpg

As you can see from the health bars above the Russian tank the driver inside also gets damaged in combat. It’s even possible to kill the driver and leave the vehicle intact and ripe for capture.

We get a transmission from Andy.

pJInL8q.jpg
: This is Cobra 2. We’re ready to go in two minutes.

And soon after that...

pJInL8q.jpg
John, we have to attack now.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: A1 good buddy. See you at Alpha.
pJInL8q.jpg
: Go, go, go!

Fortunately we are almost ready by this time, building last buggy for our soldiers. After it’s done I move my guys as close to enemy lines as I can and wait for the batteries to load.
hL1jY0y.jpg

And get this transmission from Frank.

JofaPpH.jpg
: (over radio) This is Frank, Lt. You might want to know I've seen a column of Russian vehicles heading eastward.

We also get a update on Russian defenses in the north.
wJtJ0HK.jpg

sNVXsuo.jpg

DjWhmz5.jpg

sb1iRMS.jpg

I decide this is the safest place for a breakthrough and order everyone to move there ASAP.
0EYrhl4.jpg

As soon as we enter the Russian base we get this transmission from Andy.

pJInL8q.jpg
: John, we’re in trouble here, they’re all coming this way. If you can do more then do it now!
pJInL8q.jpg
: We’ve screwed up, John. They’ve split my guys apart and they’re picking us off... (The sound of gunfire, then Russian voice, then the radio goes to static.)

He died so we can carry on with our mission :hero:
All of our guys got to the exit grid, VICTORY!

Here are our medals.
09bcWkL.jpg

fKxh7QC.jpg

na1xED5.jpg

And the intermission screen.
pOiHUTU.jpg

After all this combat and drama we made it to Alpha.

And it's only the beginning.

See you on the next mission soldiers! ;-)
And sorry for some of those small portraits, I forgot to make screens of those 2 guys character sheets. :D

Also for the next mission I might just do a video, because hell on my first try I did ~70 screenshots... And then lost some people and decided I need to restart, damned shame because it was going great.

I'd rather read a screenshot based LP, seeing as I often read these at work, between patients. But do whatever feels best for you. The important thing is to keep the LP running. :salute:

The panaceum will probably be more writing and less screenshots :)

Why not stick to the casualties? Well, unless you've lost Peterson. :)

Well I got distracted and most of my infantry strike got into a fight with gattling tanks ;p Yeah, noobish... So I redid it and this time just lost one nameless git, so it is no problem. Now I have to extract stills from the video and do a write up. I will also upload the raw footage this time ;-)

I too would rather read an LP & not watch it, for same reason as Azira..
Don't worry a update is already in the works :) I extract stills from my raw footage and do a normal write up :) but will also upload the raw if wou want to see how the game plays out exactly :)

Mission 4. Baptism by Fire.

Music

2015_06_28_174703.jpg

After two weeks spent in Alpha base captain Macmillan was given command of Gamma base. It is situated close to oil wells where its aim is the development of combustion engines and combat machinery.
Gamma Base; July 6, ERA + 1

Welcome to mission 4, Macmillan gets promoted AND gets his own base. Things are starting to look good for us finally!

But it's not perfect, Russians are right on our doorstep, having a base on south. And they have hell of a lot of manpower, Soviet style. Our current objectives are these:
xrHZ8aR.jpg

ig6DFl9.jpg
: (exits vehicle) Captain John Macmillan.
SEOeLuo.jpg
: Lt Brown at your service, sir! You arrived just in time. We’re monitoring a high level of Russian activity to the South of here.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Have you informed Alpha?
SEOeLuo.jpg
: We have sir, but we’re still waiting on a reply.
1EnNxPY.jpg
: This is THAT Macmillan?
DrPylum.jpg
: Honoured to meet you, captain. We heard about your breakthrough.
qnKG6V8.jpg
: Glad you’re still fighting with us. You’d have been wasted behind a desk sir.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: I’m glad to see you all. (walks toward oil well) So, this is the gas station.
SEOeLuo.jpg
: That’s right sir. We think there’s another supply to the East of here and we were looking to build a new tower.
Ron_Akk.jpg
: (over radio) John this is Ron Harrison.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: (into radio) Go ahead sir.
Ron_Akk.jpg
: (over radio) We’ve information the Russians are planning a base South West of your position. But first they plan to take out Gamma and they’re already on their way.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: (into radio) That cuts the welcome party short.
Ron_Akk.jpg
: (over radio) We’re sending reinforcements but you’ve got to hold the base till they arrive. Our prayers are with you John.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: (into radio) Save them for the Russians sir. They’ll be the ones who need them.

I man the bunkers and change profession of Lt. Jeff Brown to engineer (he has 4 levels in it). Also I get going the upgrades for our base - Macmillan, both engineers and the scientist are sent east, where we find a second oil well. I order a shaft built there. I also start the construction of a lab.
1qbqO5s.jpg

Lawson is put behind the wheel of the light buggy Macmillan drove to the base with and sent to scout our soroundings for crates.
AmWeBRi.jpg

After the buildings are done Macmillan is sent to the lab and changed into scientist, together with the one I got in the mission they start researching all the available techs, starting with the combustion generator.
fwnYz9x.jpg

The engineers are sent for the crates that have been found and a second buggy is ordered. I use the buggies to protect the engineers from any attacks that might come against them.
z2sKyrc.jpg

DrPylum.jpg
: It may be a good idea to upgrade our workshop, sir. We need better wiring and basic tooling machinery.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: OK. Take anything you need and build a factory. Without machinery the Russians have already won.

I accept the suggestion and cash out for the upgrade.
i4Aahrv.jpg

Upgrade to a factory enables more advanced weapons and chassis to be selected and built.

I continue researching basic techs untill they are exhausted.
y5xYEwf.jpg

In the meantime I sent my buggies a little too far south, WITH ALMOST NO JUICE!
gBuF5yf.jpg

This just shows you how bad the solar power is for combat vehicles. It's fine for noncombat ones if they don't go long distances though (at a higher crate cost) and you don't need an oil well. Still if you have combustion engines USE THEM.

Thankfully I was able to limp out of the fight with both of my mechanics alive.
S2bPaus.jpg

DrPylum.jpg
: They look great sir. They just won’t move until they get an engine!
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Sure. We’re spoilt for choice. The guys in the lab have blueprints for solar and oil based power.

I order them to fix their shit, and then chose the worst moment to recycle their vehicles, right before an enemy attack (a small infantry one). Mistakes were made here guys!
eq7vgdu.jpg

Another new thing, lab upgrades - I build myself a weapons lab. Of course I forgot to build a power plant before building structures that need power :D
vCk5beO.jpg

The advanced structures like a factory need to be powered by a powerplant.
hsaoMmO.jpg

To even the playing field I send over one of my soldiers to help. After one of Russian soldiers falls down the rest run away (it's scripted), so I chased them down and killed one of them. This is not even the beginning of the Russian ample manpower supply for this mission.
PlKqcyl.jpg

1EnNxPY.jpg
: We showed those assholes!
ig6DFl9.jpg
: You fought well. But don’t think it’s over yet. They were just taking a look. Next time won’t be so easy.

When the lab and power plant are finished I start working on a gatling gun project, finally some firepower!
5WvsxrN.jpg

After the usual gathering of crates I create my first Medium Wheeled tank (with a MG, gatlings were not researched yet).
UvcQZtm.jpg

In the same time Lucy Donaldson radioes in (we know her from prologue in mission 1, she was one of the people that went through EON with Macmillan).
t9K27eT.jpg
: (over radio) Captain Macmillan?
ig6DFl9.jpg
: (into radio) We read you, identify yourself.
t9K27eT.jpg
: (over radio) Sgt. Lucy Donaldson sir, in command of the reinforcements. We were blocked by Russians sir, we’ve gone to ground.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: (into radio) Where are you?
t9K27eT.jpg
: (over radio) I’m not entirely certain... (Sounds of gunfire echo over the radio.)...when we know, we’ll give you the location. (more gunfire)

After research was done I sent Macmillan to become a mechanic and make himself a gatling tank, it's time to hit 'n run those Russian bastards. I also replaced one of the bunkers with barracks (barracks can be occupied by 6 soldiers at a time and they can shoot out from it).
fJCxW4L.jpg

Soon after that Donaldson enters our grid. Right between 2 Russian bases. She does not seem to be too great at leading people too...
JL2YEDv.jpg
: Sgt. Donaldson shouldn’t we be South of here?
J62sqH9.jpg
: No way, look where the sun is, we’re too far South as it is.
JofaPpH.jpg
: Better play it safe and sit tight!
t9K27eT.jpg
: Shut up! All of you. (to Macmillan) Captain Macmillan.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: I hear you Donaldson.
t9K27eT.jpg
: We think we should have reached you by now, but...
ig6DFl9.jpg
: (into radio) You’ve walked into a trap.
t9K27eT.jpg
: What!?
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Keep your heads down. We’re on our way.
JofaPpH.jpg
: Didn’t like it here anyway.

Her squad entered the map on a hill, I order them to sit tight and not move A BIT. Should be safe untill we can destroy the Russian instalations between them and us.
bm7qL4z.jpg

In the meantime I built up my vehicular forces and continued to harass the Russians, killing ~6 soldiers in total.
jgLE3M4.jpg

While I was out of my base the bastards attacked with infantry through a small forest to the south of my base (3 guys). I retreated to base and reinforced my defences, the day was saved ;-) As I said before Russians have some HUGE amount of soldiers available.
ZNojtxG.jpg

Harrison seems to be worried about us and radioes in, thanks dad!
(Harrison is a damned good commander, way better than that dickhead Powell).
Ron_Akk.jpg
: (over radio) Looks like the Russians really want the area John. They’ve taken out nearly all our Eastern bases.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: What's so important to them?
Ron_Akk.jpg
: (over radio) I don’t know, but you need to start driving them back or they’ll overrun the place.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: Don’t worry. We’ll show them who runs this area.
Ron_Akk.jpg
: (over radio) I like the attitude John, but I don’t want to lose you, I’m sending more reinforcements, just give them ten minutes.

So we will get some more meatshields reinforcements, nice!
After we weakened the Russians enough we can finally destroy their secondary base without any forces being thrown at us.
KxI5FHl.jpg

I also took 2 men to become mechanics so they can build themselves tanks. Tanks are fairly powerful in this game, in the early stages at least, when there are not many weapons that are strong against them. Infantry still is very powerful when used right (that is, protected).

Some Sovs interrupt my attempt at clearing the way for Donaldson. So I kill as many as possible and retreat. Repair, rinse and repeat.
1TmImxG.jpg

Finally our reinforcements are here.
eQah5En.jpg

I escort Donaldson and her troops back to our base and prepare for the final showdown, it's on! Russians did the same and mounted a final attack but it failed, misserably.
ttxxqZH.jpg

Didn't I say already that Frank has some great oneliners? ;-)

JofaPpH.jpg
: Good to see you again Lt.
qnKG6V8.jpg
: Make that captain. He’s been promoted.
JofaPpH.jpg
: Shame, I never get on with the top brass. (Frank :incline:)
qnKG6V8.jpg
: Time you made an exception.
JofaPpH.jpg
: Maybe, but only the one. Good to see you Captain.
ig6DFl9.jpg
: You too Frank, we missed you.

In another driveby of the Russians one of my men bit the bullet.
:hero:
He will be remembered (no he won't be).
6Iz5QP3.jpg

I wanted the last charge to be made by both tanks and infantry but I hit my commie quota and Russians started to run for their lives.
H8V3w3i.jpg

We get our medals for getting more black gold, doing a brave charge (wouldn't call my hit and runs that, but hey, sure I will take the medal ;-)) and minimal loses.

Just a word of advice. When working on an update, do all your work in an off-line document.

I always wrote my LP updates in a text file on my computer, links to pictures included. When I was satisfied everything was as it should be, I then copied and pasted the entire update into the LP. That way you don't run the risk of losing your update due to bad connection or something similar.

Very good idea, thanks. I did the last update in Word actualy, but formating failed after copying ;-) The update is finished now BTW :)

Great stuff.

On a side note, if you order John to attack his girl in the first mission the game acknowledges the stunt you pulled. She screams that you've gone crazy, your allies shoot you up and I think you get an alternate gameover scene.

There is a alt gameover for attacking your guys or buildings, you are declared crazy ;-) I probably should upload that too.
