In an interview with Gamasutra, Arkane's Raphael Colantonio reflected on the development of Arx Fatalis.
"I think it was the most true game that we've worked on and done," says Colantonio. "It was exactly what I wanted to do. There were too many bugs, I know that. But still I am very proud of it." At a time when games were made by teams of 30 people or more, Arkane created Arx Fatalis with only nine people. "We sweated blood on that one."
Very inspiring. Too bad they spent the next seven years not making anything worth playing. But all is not lost as they have another blood-sweating opportunity on the way.
"Wait for next announcements," says Colantonio. "It's gonna be exactly what we want to do. Not a compromised, marketed game. We've been lucky to find a publisher that supports us and understands this kind of game and is supportive of them. The people who like the kind of games that we like are going to be really excited.
"There are companies that do first person shooters," he continues. "There are companies that do sports games. We do first person immersive games with depth. That's what we do.

Arkane Studios goes HL2 ( Game news ) posted by Ausir on Tue 03 February 2004, 17:42:16 More info on Arx Fatalis 2 - More info on Arkane Studios
Arkane Studios, the creators of Arx Fatalis, have licensed Half Life 2's Source engine from Valve for their next PC game. Here's the official press release by Valve.
"It is a very comfortable feeling for a developer to be able to concentrate on the content of its game and have access to a set of stunning features and capabilities," said Raphael Colantonio, CEO of Arkane Studios. "Source is solid, performant [sic] and extremely complete in terms of the amount of innovative features. But more important, it is also open and flexible enough to allow us to build creatively upon, without having to bare the technological risks. Working with Valve is not only a fan's dream, but also an excellent opportunity to be one of the fortunate developers in the world to benefit from the Source engine's most impressive features."
Arkane Studios joins Troika Games as the second announced Source licensee. Source is designed for the creation of games and MODs from all genres, and contains a host of proprietary tools for level editing, character direction and more.
It is not yet sure if the project is Arx 2 or a different title.

RPG Dot 2003: The most anticipated RPG ( N/A ) posted by Vault Dweller on Wed 14 January 2004, 18:36:42 More info on Arx Fatalis 2 - More info on Arkane Studios
According to the latest 2003 awards poll at RPG Dot, the most anticipated game of 2004 is Arx Fatalis 2. Hmm, I didn't think that many people liked the original, but I guess I was wrong. I'm waiting for Bloodlines which is the first runner up
White Wolf's Vampire RPG system will be brought to a PC RPG for the second time now. After Nihilistic's Redemption in 2000, Troika is developing an Action-RPG for Activision scheduled for release later in 2004.
Unlike Redemption, which spans over several hundred years with 4 major locations, Bloodlines will take place in our modern days in Los Angeles only. Technically, it will make use of the Half Life 2 engine and first screenshots look just stunning.
With RPG veterans Troika, the Vampire license, the Half Life 2 engine and a strong publisher like Activision this is certainly a game to watch out for in 2004.
Huh? Oh, right, you wanna know about Arx Fatalis, here you go and sorry for pimping Bloodlines :)
The few flaws of Arx Fatalis should now be fixed in Arx Fatalis 2, which plays before the original Arx Fatalis and also offers un upper world. Now all to do is to wish Arkane Studios to get a good publisher and to hope the game makes it in 2004.
There you go, it had flaws that may or may not be fixed. MehThere are 11 comments on this article. Click here to comment.
Arx I and II interview at RPGDot ( Interview ) posted by Saint_Proverbius on Wed 09 April 2003, 01:12:46 More info on Arx Fatalis - More info on Arkane Studios
RPGDot has posted a groovy interview with Raphael Colantonio on some design merits of Arx Fatalis and the new project they're also working on. Here's one fun bit:
Dagon: :) Reassure me... Will there be sequences based on dexterity? I cursed your name whenever there were platform jumps over lava in the Dwarf mines!
Raphael Colantonio: In fact... The reason why people cursed us in the lava sequence was because it wasn't properly made. Here's what we realized by reading the reviews: the game being rather big and having few moments of action or role or adventure, the players didn't all take it the same way. Some tried to compare us to Morrowind or other hardcore RPGs with lots of stats everywhere, without action and lots of dialogues, etc... Those players blamed the lack of weapon, armor and sub-quests variety, etc... Knowing that we really didn't want to make a game like Morrowind, it's a little bit like if someone would have blamed the lack of variety of cars compared with Ridge Racer... It kind of bothered us a little.
Jump puzzles in a CRPG are like having to stop for bathroom breaks in a racing game, just not a good idea! There are 4 comments on this article. Click here to comment.
New forum for Arx Fatalis ( Game news ) posted by Saint_Proverbius on Wed 12 March 2003, 10:27:59 More info on Arx Fatalis - More info on Arkane Studios
For those people looking to discuss Arx Fatalis still, there's a brand spanking new forum for you over there at JoWood's site.
The developers at Arkane Studios have promised to frequent the new forum to discuss what people liked and didn't like about their first title until someone at JoWood bans them from it.
It's a 1400: The Guild joke, for those who don't get it.
Thanks, Julien Roby, for the word! There are 3 comments on this article. Click here to comment.
Post-Arx Fatalis interview ( Interview ) posted by Kreegle on Thu 20 February 2003, 06:31:19 More info on Arx Fatalis 2 - More info on Arkane Studios
Warcry.com have conducted an interview with Julien Roby of Arkane Studios, the people responsible for Arx Fatalis. They chat about how the game was originally hoped to be the sequel to Ultima Underworld, why the game sold poorly in the US... and then they drop this nugget on us: Final question, then - What's next for Arkane Studios? Are you planning a sequel to Arx - something most Arx players have been clamouring for - or are you on to other things?
Well there nothing official right now because we haven't got a publishing deal yet, but it won't be a real secret if i tell you we're working on the pre production of a game called.. Mmmm.. i don't remember.. but i think the game name ends with "2";) Don your party-hats, Arx fans! Read more here - spotted at HomeLan.There are 0 comments on this article. Click here to comment.
