PC.IGN has posted a preview of Harbinger, which discusses the comparason with Diablo as well as the game's shockingly nice looking engine, and this:

Not only will the choice of a character determine his or her abilities, but it will also affect the plot that the player experiences. There is a main plotline, but sub-quests and character interactions are wholly governed by the race that's chosen, providing a different experience for each character. For example, as an initial quest, the Human is sent off on a mission to retrieve a torso for a Gladiator robot, while the Gladiator is sent off to steal information from a computer bank and the Culibine is tasked with recovering human remains. The story branches, which provide more insight into the background of the player and the ship, are further augmented by the options provided in the dialogue trees, which can further affect an NPC's decision to provide you with missions. Overall, there should be something in the range of 75 hours of play for all three characters. However, don't think that your characters are fighting through the crowded halls of Harbinger for an altruistic reason; each one has their own particular motivations for taking the tasks they're provided. The Culibine seeks revenge for the total elimination of her race in any way she can release it. The Gladiator tries to make sense of his new "body", attempting to find his place in life. The human, however, merely looks to the most basic of human desires: survival.

The main problem I see with this is that you not only have a set character type, but they're also dictating what that character's underlying goals are. You are human, you're mostly in combat in the game, but when you're not, you're focused on survival. It would have been nice if they just left the goal of your character up to the player.
