Dead Alfs 2000 has put up their review of Arx Fatalis. The reviewer generally liked it, and gave it an 8/10. Here's part of the thing:

When you?re not navigating your way through the seemingly endless maze of caverns on your way to a certain location or in search of a particular item or artifact, the inevitable element of close-quarters combat comes into question. So, is melee just another rehash of the tedious left mouse button clicking seen in every other first person RPG so far? Well, yes I suppose it is. Even after the complaints raised by Morrowind fans about a lack of enemy status in combat, no special effort has been made to make Arx Fatalis any less guilty of this most heinous offence. What gives AF the edge however, is AI. Fed up with wading through endless waves of kamikaze foes? Then you?ll find the level of intelligence demonstrated by adversaries in AF a wholly refreshing experience. In fact, what we have here is much more in line with first person shooters. Come across a lone goblin and chances are he?ll run for backup. Gameplay scenarios like this allow for a myriad of possible approaches, allowing warriors, sneakers and mages alike to make the most of their abilities. In fact, I noticed that many objectives could be accomplished through a variety of means and we all know how very important this is for all you Deus-Ex fiends out there.

Melee combat in first person RPGs is one thing I really hate about them.
